Goemon is about Japanese folklore, that's something has no relevance anywhere but Japan and appreciation for Japanese stuff wasn't nearly as widespread as it is now

Second level or second world? Anyway it doesn't ramp up the difficulty until the 3rd world.
It's a kind of difficult platformer, but you should be able to get through it, it has infinite continues, doesn't it?
Goemon is the best character due to double-jump. Try to always get all the cat dolls, they power up your pipe, there's a silver pipe, and a gold pipe which is the biggest, you lost the powerup level if you get hit though, so try not to get hit.

I think new generation Goemon is not related to the original, it's like an alternative non-canon spinoff.

"leased time programming" on an NYC public tv channel was my first exposure, circa 1992-3. News, karaoke shows, cooking, golf, melodramatic romance movies, a very broad scope of Japanese programming and all of it subbed. But what really turned me into a Japanophile was the Taiga dramas and chanbara tv shows. I was into samurai way earlier than i was into anime.

So to bring it back to /vr/, when I first watched Nobunaga: King of Zipangu and then played Nobunaga's Ambition: Lord of Darkness I was in fucking samurai heaven. That game will always be my personal favorite game of that era.
