When does this get good? I'm on chapter 8 and it's linear as hell, the encounter rate is just as obnoxious as 2, the minigames are as tedious as 3, and every boss battle has been ridiculously easy.

This game, and most games for that matter, doesn't magically change styles at random, it'll always remain like what you've played. You won't like it, might as well drop it unless you really want to experience the story.

Does this even happen in BoF2? From what I remember, you can switch your party members at Dragon God statues, so you never have to backtrack to change them. You do have to backtrack to shamanize them and the story does ping pong you a fair bit during the first part, but character swapping wasn't the reason for it.

Breath of Fire is not very good. It's as standard as a JRPG can get.

This one is the best because it's very pretty to look at. But that's it

To be fair, Momo is more human than grassrunner.
Because there's a lot of degenerate species mixing in the BoF world, a lot of hybrid individuals end up looking like humans, but for whatever reason as long as they have any feature of another race (ears or tail), they are still considered part of that race instead.

The English version is fine.

If you were genuinely interested in what was changed and not just shitposting then read this thread. This guy played the English and Japanese version side by side in a emulator and compares the translations. Cool read.

Any argument against starting with BoF III? I own V already, but I can play III to get a feel for the earlier series. I'm not upset about DQ. Rather, I think it's a unique game with a lot of interesting ideas. I like it a lot. Still want to try one of the previous games, though. I'd like to better understand why V gets panned so much.

>> No.4481508

>>4481418
BOF3 is a good starting point, I think. BOF1 and 2 really didn't do anything for me (though in BOF2's case, that could be due to the abysmal localization job). I enjoyed 3 more than 4, but I don't know what the general consensus is on that; both are good.

Dragon Quarter gets a lot of flak for being different. I actually disliked it quite a bit, at first, but by the time I finished the game, I appreciated it.

I can't think of any reason to say NO to three if you want to play it but 4 is overall probably my favorite in the series and really builds on a lot of what 3 built so going backwards may be rougher than going forward. 3 also has a setting closer to 1 and 2 with it's European fantasy aesthetic versus 4's Oriental one and 4 also has one of the best turned based battle systems ever.

>I'd like to better understand why V gets panned so much.

Because it's different and hard. People always make the same complaints about needing to restart (Which you don't) or not being able to spam dragon blasts instead needing to actually get good.

Fans wanted the same old song and dance we got before and while Im a fan of the old style games it was clear they had pretty much run as far as that course will take them. DQ is goddamn great.

1 and 2 may be hard to get into unless you enjoy cryptic grindfests. 1 in particular is horrible at telling you what to do next and is as generic a wrpg as you will get. 2 is better at those but not by a large margin.

bof 2 has a fan translation that fixes many of the localization problems, look it up in case you get to play the game.

I find myself rather enjoying 1 a lot lately. It's certainly a very shallow game, but there's also something earnest and quaint about it. It's less about character and story and more about moving from fantastical event and place to fantastical event and place.
