Metal Slug is fun and very well made,
Contra is ofter poorly made and equally fun as Metal Slug, They are equally great but for different reasons.

I always prefered Contra for its better controls, fast stable framerate, frantic gameplay, and better music. Though I do like how challenging Metal Slug games are, how they never turned into boss rush games and of course the visuals. Contra 3 and onwards kind of lost a lot of its appeal for me, and only recovered it in 4 and Rebirth.

Contra 1 arcade isn't harder than the NES version. Super Contra on the hardest setting is actually pretty crazy but he is right overall.

Don't forget that Metal Slug games have adjustable difficulty too. If we're talking about the original Neo Geo version, the game is set on difficulty level 4 by default, but it goes all the way up to 8.
