I can't into western rpg games for the life of me, especially the old shit and crpg's in general.

What is literally babies first western rpg that would prove a good entry point? I have tired both the first Fallout and Baldur's Gate 2 but I could never get in to either

>> No.4472173

Albion
Lands of Lore
Might and Magic: World of Xeen

>> No.4472195

The original Wizardry, honestly. It's relatively uncomplicated, only using the most standard classes (Fighter, Thief, Priest, Mage and a couple not-available-at-first combination classes), only two schools of magic, and relatively few items, most of which have very straight forward names like Sword+1 and "Scroll of name-of-spell-it-casts". It's not super easy, but it's not overwhelming and eases you into stuff fairly well.

If you haven't tried the game in your pic then you should. It's a great intro to the old Gold Box D&D games. I played through it for the first time earlier this year, never touched an RPG that old, and I thought it was great. Started up Treasures right after and imported my party and I plan to play the Krynn games after I finish.

If not, I also agree that you should check out Lands of Lore. Its a really simple game in terms of RPG mechanics, to the point where its almost more of a first person adventure game.

Elder Scrolls: Arena

If you've played any later TES, getting into this is only a minor adjustment. Unlike a lot of older cRPGs, you can't really fuck up permanently and have no immediate goals to follow, so you can take your damn time and get rich and powerful. I find it, along with Daggerdall, very much a comfort game, easy to get sucked into.

If you're looking for a more traditional experience, I think Might & Magic 3 is less tedious than any blobber of this era.
You should also try Dungeon Master, it's not an easy game but its interface is incredibly good in retrospect, and levels are distinctive enough that you can deal without mapping shit.

>> No.4473532

Most of these suggestions are terrible.

If you honestly couldn't enjoy Fallout or Baldur's Gate, then this might not be the genre for you.

I would recommend Ultima 1 or any of its good ripoffs, like Questron, and that's only if you can tolerate playing on old computers. These games typically didn't go heavy on the D&D arithmetic shit, with attacks often being as simple as pressing one button. It's almost like playing a western Zelda.

Don't recommend Wizardry to a beginner.

I want to get into these old games because I love learning about the history of games, but I fear I'm both too casual and don't have enough time to get through the entirety of some of these games or series. The oldest CRPG I've beaten is The Elder Scrolls: Arena, and got about halfway through Betrayal at Krondor before putting it down for a bit after getting burned out.

What are the absolute essentials? Preferably in order. Say from 1980 to 2000.

Best suggestions so far, as they're forgiving and not overly complicated. I'll add Might and Magic III that could fit the bill, even if it's a bit tougher than Xeen, or Betrayal at Krondor if you like the Riftwar books.

>> No.4477785

In Wizardry 1, spinners mostly exist as gimmicks on two specific floors, teleports to lower floors don't exist, and the game is meant to be played with the manual, which does explain the spells.

That's because most western RPGs were created by white people for white people who don't know anything about other cultures. Most don't even know their own culture that's why they simply copy Tolkien and D&D instead of using real historic european settings.

Also, most European cultures aren't as engaging as "world war II, buy with fantasy characters" like LotR is. 80% of the time is "digging in the dirt to farm carrots while i wait for the next war so I can watch my lastest batch of sons die".

Just try baldur's gate 1. It makes much more sense as a starting point than 2. Years ago I tried starting with 2 as well based on idiots from /v/ and I absolutely hated it and didn't know what was happening because the d&d bullshit isn't exactly self-explanatory. Read up on d&d and tried BG1 a couple months later and it clicked. Tutu is necessary though.

Well those pretty much are babby's first crpg so if you don't like those I doubt you'd like much else in the genre, maybe try Diablo games since they're action oriented or Planescape Torment maybe as the strange plot may draw you in and it isn't very combat focused early on.
