19" Sylvania Superset from 1984, RF-only. Probably not an ideal setup for most people no matter what, but this is the most fun for me to use. I own a PVM and at home have a 26" Mitsubishi with S-Video that I've played on for years, and this is my favorite set out of all of them.
It's hard to explain and I'm still gonna sound like a dumbass hipster but I'll try anyway. It's not nostalgia because I never grew up with anything this old. It just hits all the right spots for me, the excellent external design with woodgrain sides, super low hour tube with like-new picture, the tuner makes RF look better than on any other TV I've seen, it fits snug on top of my fridge with the mushroom stand, I just... I just fucking like the thing, ok?

I have a CRT I use normally and have always used.

It's nothing special, I notice no difference between mine and other displays other than resolution, but

This TV is mine.

It's a pretty late gen thing, though. Rather big, rather modern. Probably made in the late 90s or early 00s. Still. It's mine.

Most of the time I played on various Commodore Monitors. But mainly the 1084 series that originally was intended for the Amiga. A played almost all my retro systems on these monitors, because the image (despite the small screen) was just so much better than most of my (admittedly cheap) TVs.

I started gaming on a C64 (not counting the east german computer that I never owned myself) using a worn out wood grain east german black and white TV with failing phosphor, so I had to darken the room to see shit. My first "western" TV weren't that good either. You know RF is shit especially if you want to see text on the screen.

My first Commodore Monitor (I guess it was a dedicated C64 Monitor like the Commodore 1901) was way better. But it looked like shit when I got the Amiga (the Amiga could only connected to these via Composite) and the built in speaker was just awful. And just like that I switched to an 1084 and used the C64, Amiga 500, Amiga 1200, Playstation, Playstation 2, Dreamcast and Game Cube on it.

Too bad my last 1084-S (maybe my third of that series) died some years ago.

I recently got a snesc mini and must say with a good flatscreen, I can`t notice any lag at all... I even have the feeling, it has less lag then emulating via wii onto a crt. Also using the crt-filter I realized again how a little blurriness is important for the overall picture.

I also got a low hour grundig shadowmask set that still has the right amount of blurr, but I will mostly keep using it for watching SD movies and series.

A really shitty Panasonic 21 inch. Has 1 RF in back, and 1 composite with audio left and right in front. With a headphone jack. The picture is blurry af and is dark, even after doing my best to adjust settings to solve this.

I only use it when my friends are over because they are sensitive to input lag and complain if we use the OLED.

I am not sensitive to input lag though, so when it is just me alone, I play on my OLED through an RGB SCART to HDMI converter/upscaler. The picture is really clean and the colors are beautiful.

This one. Its no Framemeister, but games still look really good through it. The difference between composite and this thing is instantly noticeable (especially on Genesis). It still blows me away how much better Genesis looks through RGB. PS1 also is dramatically improved, especially in color accuracy.

And instead of $370 (like the Framemeister), this thing only cost me $35.

Only down side is it gets a little hot after a while, so maybe dont leave it plugged in when not using it. Also in 1080p mode the lag is pretty unusable, but in 720p mode, it isnt really noticeable (to me anyway). But the visual difference between 720 & 1080 on this arent really any different anyway. So just leave it in 720p mode.

wow, a webpage that says something! It must be right.

Look at it this way. I have a PVM-14M4A with it's 800TVL tube. The dot pitch of that is 0.18mm, or as good as it gets, AFAIK. The dot pitch of the 1084 listed on that page of yours says 0.42mm. Assuming the PVM is slightly smaller physically than the 1084s (which it is) you'll get about 400TVL at absolute best. I'd go with about 300TVL, personally.

TL:DR the numbers on that webpage are screwy, and can't be right. Whoever wrote them was either measuring something wrong, or is full of it.

Enjoy!

CRT's are supposed to be curved to keep the image in focus uniformly across the entire screen. It's like a big glass lens. Flat screen CRT's use some sort of trickery to achieve this without the curvature, but it usually results in less-than-perfect geometry.

Curved glass also provides more structural support, meaning flat screen CRTs generally had to have thicker glass, and were much heavier as a result.

Oh, and a lot of later flat screen CRT's were EDTVs which did some terrible kind of digital to analog conversion, which adds input delay to the equation.

Ok, better. Do you have any information on the dot pitch of a 600TVL model, though? And why does that page anon listed before say both 0.42mm and 600TVL? The four or five i've seen recently definitely have the 0.42mm pitch - or at least one significantly larger than a 600TVL PVM, which i'll grant *might* still put them as high as 400TVL. I'll have to maintain that the 300TVL I guesstimated is closer to 400 than 600 is, whichever way you slice it :)

I've never tried to photograph the dot pitch of a CRT, though if it's possible to do so with a rule in front, perhaps we should try. I'm away for a week later today though, but i'm keen in the new year if anyone else is.

Nope. Last time I bought a bunch of them for 12€. Two PVMs and two other professional CRTs.
They are hard to come by as they are literary trashed, but if you do they are always cheap because people here aren't into the PVM/BVM meme. Probably because you can get +30 inch Trinitrons with RGB for free even.

Depend on where you're getting it. There are still studios using them and giving away the ones they don't use anymore.
I bought one 2 month ago for less than 50€ from someone who actually work for on of the national TV channels and used an it for his personal studio (it's an older mid 1980s model that's now harder to come by, but it's still capable of displaying 600TVL) and he told me how there are still many in use where he works (though they're getting replaced more and more over time).

We don't really have much that retro craze here. Specially about PVM/BVMs, as I said, probably because people who even are into the retro craze, prefer bigger Trinitrons that already have RGB also over smaller PVM/BVMs.
But there are still plenty of places cleaning out their old CRTs, usually they go on sale in bulk or literary to recyclers. So when you shout out you pick them up for free, you get more offers even because it's cheaper for them to get rid of them as when you sell them, specially for anything more then a few eur, they might stay on sale for a while.

Both. I enjoy emulating, especially MAME, NeoGeo, and those obscure systems that I cannot afford. Playing on real hardware is also a great experience, since I find it satisfying when I feel like a game I can just plug in a cartridge, turn on a system, and be directly in a gaame without any system-on splash screen or tech logos.

The Super Retro Trio was my best option to play my NES games I kept since it was $50. A NES in my area goes for $110-$135USD. As for the flash carts, they are sourced from China for their low price, which has been reported to damage consoles, so if they damage the Super Retro Trio, I would not be too distraught. Good eye to see the WonderMega, I love its looks and fancy motorized door.

>>4481361
I also have two of these monitors, GDM FW-900, for my computer. It is able to support the resolutions of my Xbox 360. Sadly I can only use one at a time because my desk is only rated to support the weight of just one. Also, I love Candy Cane, I bought her games.

>>4481375
I have to settle for cheap stuff from China because I don't earn enough. While I would definitely want to play on the original systems, they have just gotten too costly and I can't really tell the difference to the Chinese stuff unless I really focus on sensing it. The SNES controllers there are actually Genesis controllers, they are just shaped like SNES controllers. They came with the Super Retro Trio, and only the start and select buttons feel different from real SNES controllers.
