Jill of the Jungle, Commander Keen, and Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure are good games to start out with if you like platformers. Anything by Epic of Apogee, really.

How come /vr/ loves DOS and is helpful when it comes to DOS.
But if it's any other computer from the /vr/ period, it gets automatically shitpost and hate?

Specially weird when considered DOS almost never had the definitive ports of any games.

>> No.4469462

Either use D-Fend Reloaded(front-end and auto-config utility for dosbox) or PCem. D-Fend makes setup a lot easier, and PCem is far more accurate and capable of playing games that crash under dosbox.

That list is highly questionable and a number of games especially 80s stuff like Wasteland and Alter Ego are much superior on the C64 or Amiga. It also has several meme games like Commander Keen.

>But if it's any other computer from the /vr/ period

Most other retro computer platforms have no games that are worth playing now; they were too primitive. PC compatible/DOS games from the 90s (that is to say by the point where decent sound, graphics, and game mechanics were available) are the only retro computer ones worth bothering with.

There isn't a single game on an Apple II you need to bother without outside of nostalgia.

eXoDOS is the best answer. Just download the !dos folder with the screenshots, unzip it and note the games that look interesting. You can then download them individually from theeye. There's a lot of shovelware or large FMV games that you might not be interested in.

Personally, I really enjoy those boring management and spreadsheet simulators and the occasional silly FMV.

Because it is an enthusiast's game platform.

I recommend taking a look at the sort of thing that made PC gaming unique. Here's US Navy Fighters, one of the games I was playing in 1995 on DOS. It isn't "better" than console games, but you couldn't really play anything like it on console.

Hell yeah, loved US Navy Fighters. Now that I think of it, the Jane's games from that period don't have any real equivalent these days. Flight games are either Ace Combat style arcade action games or hyper realistic "learn to fly the real thing or die" stuff like Falcon 4.0 or DCS. The Jane's games were a good inbetween, with sim elements but a simple flight model that let you fly a bunch of varied planes. Also liked HIND and Apache Longbow for their light sim feel. Those are worth checking out for OP if he could get into that sort of thing.

One of my favorite DOS games to check out is Lands of Lore. Dungeon Master style game done by the guys that did Eye of the Beholder, but this one is more of an adventure game with simpler RPG elements. Has really crisp graphics and lots of voice acting on the CD version that I feel was decent for the time (not close to winning any awards though). Great music too, especially if you emulate the right sound hardware. Other than that, I'd say Crusader: No Remorse/Regret. If you only play one play Regret because it improves on the gameplay a tad. Rad game, but lots of people seem to hate the controls. I actually found them to be kind of elegant when I got good at them, and I only played it for the first time two years ago.

>Because it is an enthusiast's game platform.
Are you retarded? DOS was shit until DooM came out, even then it took years for it to catch up to other platforms.
It (PC) had the worst graphics and media capabilities of any microcomputer system for the first 13 years of its life. Sure is an "enthusiast" platform LOL.

I'm not so fond of that sort of thing either but it has its audience, and the prevailing attitude is "why play a sex game when I could just watch porn and have my hands free?"
games like that usually are either free American Flash games or niche Japanese games
