Well no, Aeris is not a shitty character at all. Aerith Gainsborough was a Cetra who had the ability to hear the cries of the planet. As a healer class she had the ability to save others. Her garden in the church in the slums says it all. Aerith is a light in a dark world. She died to save the planet. When she entered the lifestream after being murdered by Sephiroth she reappeared at the end of the story to defeat the meteor. Aerith never really died. She's still waiting somewhere in the lifestream for her true love. When I play Final Fantasy 7 I remember all of this so playing as Cloud Strife makes me feel good because I happen to know my true love is waiting for me at the end of my journey. She is a beautiful character who I would marry if she were actually real and here beside me.

There's a lot more likable characters out there that was made from the same mold as Aeris and just do a much better job of being a plucky healer. Even healer characters that aren't spunky manage to be more likable than Aeris, like Mint from Tales of Phantasia.

She opens the story and closes it. It was a poetic way to end the story. Aerith conquered over evil. I actually think Cloud is one of the better FF protags. The other characters like Vincent and even Cait Sith/Reeve are at least interesting in a high concept sort of way, Aeris doesn't even have that.

But even Nei is interesting in a face value high concept type of way. Aeris is nothing new or special. The only thing unique that she offers to her archetype is that she dies and even Phantasy Star did that before FFVII.
