So, dear ma/vr/icks, how is emulation on this fucker?
Just learned that it has a lot of homebrew emulators, then I thought about getting one, but a quick research showed me that it can't handle it very well.
So I'd like to hear your input on it, /vr/. Can it stand up for itself as a good emulation machine... or it loses it's ground to PCs or Classic Xboxes?
Many thanks.

>> No.434453

I like it a lot. It plays all NES and SNES games well. You can play pretty much any N64 game released on the Virtual Console if you find the WAD file. It can play PC engine games too. Gameboy and Gameboy Color games run perfectly, and GBA is passable, but it can be slow sometimes.
I haven't bothered with PS1, but I've heard it's not good.

>> No.434464

hell yes it can. Have a ton of emulators on it myself

N64 emulator is kind of choppy, but otherwise runs pretty well

On a side note, how the fuck do I set up a sega cd iso? It either says it cant load the bin or the file is too alrge

>> No.434468

Every NES, SNES, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Master System, Genesis and Game Gear game I've thrown at mine runs flawlessly. I still haven't tried Sega CD emulation on, but I'll get to it. It's pretty much a bust in terms of PS1 and N64 emulation, so if you really want those, you might be disappointed.

Not retro, but it can also play a good amount of Gamecube games as well.

>> No.434637

Wii emulation is alright. NES, SNES, GBC, Genesis, and Gamegear/Master System all run perfectly. GBA games have framerate issues, but they're still playable. For N64, you're going to have to buy/pirate the games that are on Virtual Console. Good luck with anything else. You can find the Homebrew apps on Wiibrew.

Something I should mention is that the Sega emulator crashes whenever I try to load Sega CD bios but that could just be me being stupid and having something set up wrong.

Would also love to hear about MAME. I can emulate it on my Classic Xbox, but the thing is I'd need to put on a bigger HDD on it. That requires a bit of work, and I'm afraid to wreck it up in the process. The Wii is just more "expendable" to me.

The Wii is a terrific 8/16 bit emulating machine. Easy as shit to soft-mod, so you get Wii ISOs, if that's your thing. Their classic controller is very well made and feels good. Highly recommended for everything below N64.

It's not really that great. The only thing it has going for it is the conveniance of not having to load up every individual app to play any particular game, but usually when I sit down to play, I just fiddle around with one game from one emulated platform at a time, and it's basically loading the exact same emulators I already have standalone, so comparatively it's the same deal.

If you install a corrupt/faulty WAD, or the installer somehow crashes halfway through, you will brick. If you're not sure whether or not whatever WAD you download off the internet is good or not, you should make sure to have something to fall back on in case it does brick your Wii.

All Wiis older than mid 2008 have a vulnerable boot2, which you can replace with a custom one called bootmii, that'll allow you to control your Wii in case you full-brick.

All Wiiis produced after 2008 no longer have a vulnerable boot2, and must rely on Priiloader or a similar System Menu patcher. Priiloader is essentially useless with full-bricks, but it's good enough if you somehow manage to install a faulty channel, or fuck up something that doesn't corrupt your entire NAND. It's advised that when you're installing Priiloader, to have your Wii connected to the internet, and to let your Wii rest a couple of minutes on the Homebrew Channel for your console to properly initialize on the network. Do note, that the installer itself doesn't download anything off the internet, it's just to prevent the installer from crashing inadvertently due to a stupid bug that the developer refused to properly fix.

Do not listen to >>442356

Automated installers are the devil.

This anon >>442367 is correct, but getting an emulated NAND is way too much effort for what it's worth. If you're careful about what you install and take the proper preventive measures, you don't really need to emulate a NAND.

Also, stay away from WAD loaders (not installers), as they still require installing them on your NAND temporarily everytime you play and they will shorten its life.

I've always used an emunand, and for reasons you've already mentioned I'm worried about installing the SNES games to the Wii to check. There are other graphical issues, like the ratio problem on the Neo Geo titles, but the SNES is the worst.

I haven't looked much into emulated NANDs. I prepped my Wii once and went through a 2 day long ordeal that always ended with me staring at a black screen whenever I tried launching an emulated NAND.

>would you know if the glitching problem that happens on some SNES VC games would also happen if I installed it directly to the system memory?

What glitching problem? If you're using VC games with injected ROMs, there's a good chance you'll find bugs and glitches because it's using an emulator created specifically for another game. As far as I know, all official VC games work flawlessly (save for a couple like Mario Kart 64 that can't emulate Memory Cards, and thus, cannot record Ghosts).

As I mentioned earlier, you can try them out on your actual NAND safely if you want, but only after making sure you have a fallback measure, like bootmii or Priiloader.

Still, there's a good chance that if that WAD worked on your emulated NAND, it'll work on the real deal. But it never hurts to be extra prepared. Proceed at your own discretion.

The TV's fine too, it happens on particular systems, i.e. SNES will ghost with some shit on the right-hand side of the screen, Neogeo will have some fucked up ratio.
The weird thing is, the Neogeo games I've tried are legit dumps of the actual VC shop titles, but even they have ratio problems. I don't know if it's because I'm playing through emunand.

>> No.449696

>>447324
If you've installed Bootmii as Boot2 that's all you need to do. The screen will only ever load when you have it on the SD card yes, and that's how it should be. If you brick the console then you can put the files back on the SD, load up that screen still and fix your wii.

Some background on how it works is useful as well because knowledge is power in these kind of things to prevent yourself breaking anything. Boot2 is part of the Wii's boot up process, after Boot0 and boot1 which are unable to be changed and super super necessary. The Boot2 vulnerability you've used and changed stops the boot up of the console before anything else.
The NAND (flash memory) hasn't been accessed yet, even the Wii remotes bluetooth chip hasn't been activated yet. So this allows you to back up your console before it loads anything, and replace your entire NAND if you've corrupted it, before it loads. Making the console practically unbreakable from software issues. Hardware obviously not.

The important step you need to do which sounds like you haven't is backup and download your NAND from bootmii. One of the four options you have on the page is Backup nand to SD. This copies the entire contents of your console on your SD card along with the 'keys' to it. Get this file, save it on your computer and forget about it. Update it every now and then if you've been playing a lot or done a lot of new things on your Wii as obviously that copies only from a set time.

The whole process is essentially like making a manual system restore point.

If your Wii was to brick, you replace the nand with the working copy you have backed up. if you only have bootmii as ios like in later Wii's, obviously you can't access this screen before the Wii loads anything, so you can't fix it as well if you were to brick it.

To update loader, you just replace the files in your sd. most notably, the .dol file in the folder of your loader in the apps folder.

SD:/apps/usb-loader/boot.dol

So between DOSbox, Retroarch, Wiimednafen, VC wads and WiiSX/Wii64 you've got almost everything retrocovered.

Having a CRT and composite cables make it the closest experience you can get to the real deal.

Just hook up a Classic Controller and you are good to go.

Sounds like the controller is the one with issues, but I guess you don't have the issue in other shit. Let's see.

Do you have the latest version? (0.9.8.4)
Do you have the 1st controller configured with CCP?

Everything but N64 and Playstation run pretty well, N64 isn't too bad but it has problems with compatibility and rendering textures.

So, reading through all of the thread... It's right to assume that the troublesome/tricky part would be using the vc WADs? Softmodding it and intalling emulators are nearly risk-free?
Thanks

So I was playing some Air Zonk for TG16 on the VC, but after beating stage 3's boss (or maybe it was stage 4), the game screen got black, and I can hear the stage title music, but nothing can be seen.

What gives? it is possible for a VC title to just glitch out? Do I need to download a new WAD?
