I sadly do this a lot. I have four kids, oldest is 14 and has grown up with access to all kinds of retro stuff. Kinda stopped caring around 9 or so, but over the last couple years has really gotten interested again. She likes to watch me play stuff as well, and try to dredge up old tricks and secrets from half-remembered game articles or shit i managed to do over a decade ago.

Fair enough, but remember that Nintendo did jack shit with him up until this game came out, at most he was a forgettable character in Mario Kart. It wasn't until Rare came along and gave Ninty something to push during the Holiday season and damn did it play, look, and feel good. With different types of gameplay, hidden rooms, and a unique art style it sold gangbusters.

Perhaps revolutionary isn't the right word but it added to the lifespan and relevance of the SNES in a time where 3D was picking up thanks to the Saturn and PSX.

It was actually the opposite of revolutionary, it was a preemptive response to a coming revolution Nintendo knew it was a whopping two years behind on. Still they did manage to get it out and blitzkrieg the market with it before the real 3D games started to drop. As much as I hate Nintendrones, Nintendo is a real survivor of a company that thinks outside the box with their products while simultaneously boxing in their customer base. They're brilliant - and continue to be brilliant. I'm sure the Pokemon game that will come out in 2018 including elements of Pokemon Go will sell a million Switches and God bless them.

Good isn't the same as 'revolutionary'. DKC gameplay is a bog-standard platformer. Sure, it's amazingly executed, but it's pretty basic.

Mega Man introduced switching weapon with ammo, Metroid introduced exploration and directional aiming, Castlevania added limited subweapons and health refill after a boss, SMB2 focused its gameplay on carrying and interacting with items, SMB3 and Zelda 2 together made overworld a standard in platformers, Sonic created unique style of gameplay focused on flow and momentum, Mega Man X changed vertical platforming forever with its wallkick mechanic, Yoshi's Island flipped traditional health mechanics and approach to difficulty on its head...

But what the fuck did DKC do that was so new at the time? Overworlds were old news by then; Idea of switchable characters with slightly different abilities was old by then since games like NES TMNT and Little Samson, and DK/Diddy don't even play that drastically different; rocket barrels are basically expanded take on Kirby cannons (and throwing barrels is just Mario turnips and koopa shells); animal buddies are just Yoshi taken up to 11. Fuck, DKC wasn't even the first game to feature a minecart sequence!

All of these improve on old concepts, but none of them are NEW concepts. DKC was evolution, not revolution.

By the time I was 12, I had seen Robocop, The Thing, Alien, played GTA, Doom, Carmageddon, Mortal Kombat, and Waxworks. Now that I'm 28, I'm a social worker and currently saving my money so I can take a course in child psychology.

Know what I dealt with last year? A 23 year old man who was so sheltered and coddled he didn't understand that sexually assaulting his girlfriend was wrong. No violent games, no violent movies, not even allowed to read the paper, pretty much kicked out of the house at 18. He reached adulthood without a chance to tell fantasy from reality, fact from fiction, romanticized from realistic. He is now under house arrest and has a restraining order and only because I explained his upbringing to his now ex-girlfriend and she understood, and requested the judge show some leniency at court because of it and the fact he pleaded guilty.

The moral of the story is; good parenting is teaching fantasy from reality, horrible parenting is hiding reality in a fantasy.

Graphics are subjective, I like DKC but always found pre-rendered 3d abysmal in every way I've ever seen it.
Gameplay's good but mostly because it has a good flow, and in that department it's still behind mmx, sanic and pulseman.
The mounts are good and make for a good change of pace, but then you do have to deal with squawks fucking up gameplay, and they're not as good asnormal gameplay in these other games.
Bosses were largely boring in comparison to platformers at that time, 2 and 3 expanded but you really don't want to include platformers up to 1996 in this argument, it's for your own good.
At the time the only new thing it had going for it were pre-rendered 3d graphs, which shouldn't impress OP's nephew in any way. As of today, it's a quite subpar platformer with less than optimal hitboxes and gameplay, shadowed by both the 2nd and 3rd game in it's own franchise.
