GAUNTLET WIKI: http://vgauntlet.wikia.com/wiki//v/_Gauntlet_Wiki

Good evening, /vr/others! Welcome to the Retro Game Gauntlet!

Start at NES, and work through in the following order:

NES
SNES
GB/GBC OR Sega Game Gear
Megadrive/Genesis
Turbografx16
DOS
NeoGeo
GBA OR Sega Master System
Commodore 64 OR Commodore Amiga
Playstation 1 OR Nintendo 64

You have three days to complete the game without assistance (each game gets three days, though RPGs are allowed a week due to length).

Select your system here:
http://s3kr.it/gauntlet.html

You can also do it manually if you don't trust the random number generator:
http://s3kr.it/systems/

AND BRING ME SCREENSHOTS PARKER
(Above copied from the previous gauntlet thread >>402886 which maxed out)

Rules:
1) Savestates are allowed ONLY for the purpose of taking screenshots and ONLY if your emulator/game in question does not have a pause function.
2) Rerolls are allowed under the following conditions:
-The game you get requires some sort of hardware functionality that cannot be accurately emulated to complete (eg, Boktai)
-The game would otherwise require cheats, hacks, or alteration of the software to complete due to a bug (eg, Cheetahmen II)
For games that have a high score or no end, the rule is
>if no high score has been established, set a goal and beat it
>if you.re playing something another anon already has a high score on, beat their high score
>if you are playing extended rpgs/pokemon/whatever you get a week (Depending on the game: needs to be asked in thread)

NEW RULES/GUIDELINES TO POSTING IN THE GAUNTLET THREADS:

-Do not post screenshots every other screen, make them few and meaningful
-Do not start a new thread before current one bump or image limit is exceeded

Finally, I reach the castle after finishing the other levels. The boss of the tower, and the last dungeon I did, was Medusa. Apparently beating her up causes her to turn into a naked girl.

Did find Mad Doctor Mickey but missed Band Concert Mickeys.
Fucked up and didn't manage to screencap Prince and Pauper enemy retrospective during the credits roll, but oh well.

Apparently each dungeon has an "Item" to it. The tower had a morning star (which doubled as a hookshot), the cave a magic staff, etc. This one is a sword. Time for the boss.

We pink dragons again.

Saved the 3rd of 3 princesses, and now a 4th tower (TV Tower) opened up. I really REALLY hope this is the last tower.

Also, to get through the end of the last tower, I had no in-game map on the top floor, the map was full of warp spots, and the only way to get to the end was to walk through a fake wall that looked no different from normal walls. Fuck this game.

From ROMHacking.net

>Mikhail Gorbachev, born March 2, 1931, was the last leader of the Soviet Union, serving from 1985 until its collapse in 1991. This game makes a joke that his master plan is actually to take over Japan and that he is going to do this by running a big oil pipeline from his oil fields in Russia to Japan.

>The goal of the game is to complete a certain number of pipes from the blue liquid on the right side of the screen to the empty pipes on left. Some stages have less empty pipes and some have less water pipes from the right. Each level contains 9 stages. Each stage goes faster than the previous stage until you finish the level. In level 1 you have to make 2 pipes. In level 2, you have to make 3 pipes.

>Two Russian children are the people who are building the pipeline. To make the pipes, you use tiles made out of groups of 2 pipe segments that the boy drops from the top. The segments contain straight pipe segments and 90 degree angle pipe segments.

Ooo... kay. Anyway, are ROM hacks cool if all they do is translate?

OK, starting to understand. Water comes out the green pipes on the right and you have use the pipe pieces you're given to connect the water spitting pipe on the right to a pipe on the left. When you do this a few times the stage is clear, though I have no idea what the quota is. I'm looking at a map screen now and there appears to be a set number of stages. I'll wait and see where this goes before deciding what my goal should be.

Once I adapted to horizontal scrolling I did better. Again, short levels with lots of bullets and enemies.

Boss was simple, fly through the obvious gaps in the bosses bullets, look out when he charges you.

Power-up in this game are:

>multi directional shot, good screen coverage
>Wide lasers, good destructing power in a decent area
>Rings that expand and cover the screen, but are weak
>Lasers that break into more lasers

I'm digging the default (yellow) and the wide lasers (green) so far.

What are the hardest levels, /vr/?

Dear god level 3 is a pain. Loo at the top shot. fucking look at it. There is no way to pass though without getting hit, which costs you a power-up level. There's a Yellow right after it though, and it's ability to fire behind is much needed, so that was what I went with.

After dying 3 times to the boss, finally beat him. He leaps up, and lands on eith erside, so just stay in the middle, then fly back and shoot down the missiles and dodge the regular bullets. His weak spot is his ribcage, which is what drags the fight out when you spend most of your time evading.

Next level is inside the moon.

After the madness that was Stage 3, stage 4 was pretty....soft. Sure I lost all of my lives but I only got through Stag 3 by memorizing everything. A lot of the tricks from the previous level repeat (sans the no-way-to-avoid-explosions thankfully) so it felt like more of the same

It had 2 mid bosses, the 2nd just a 'More Dakka' version of the first. Fly around, avoid bullets, wait for it to open up, fly up just enough to avoid the lasers, damage weak spot.

Even the boss was simple. It shoots at you. It stretches it neck to do it. You can only hit it from the front in that tiny red part. Fly above it when it gets close, then when it runs backwards, destroy the missiles before they hit you.

Stage 5 under a lake inside the moon. Let's do this

So, the controls are shit. 3 hits and you're dead. When you get hit, you lose a heart but.. You can pick up hearts and if you pick up enough, you'll gain your health back but it doesn't matter. if you get hit three times, no matter how many hearts you have, you'll die. So.. whatever..

Of course, there's retarded obstacles like water leaks and drops of water.

Although the level itself is easy (there's only 1 bit where you feel challenged, and that's before the boss) the boss is a dick. His weak spot is his mouth, which is tiny, and isn't always open. He likes to charge you. So you have a small hitbox to content with, and the need to be constantly moving around.

I ended up simply spamming bombs, since you get 3 a life, because I couldn't deal enough damage with my weapon.

Next level is The Core. Final level? If so, this is a hell short game

The first couple of levels are just straight left to right through pipe and cargo filled rooms. This is the 3rd level and relies heavily on the climbing mechanics. You can ledge grab but, of course, it's buggy and shit. The water rises on it's own but if you go to the top of the screen, the screen will scroll with you, along with the water. So, it doesn't really make any sense. Whatever.

Real funny, game. This level apparently starts at the halfway point. You can go right or left and both paths are pretty long. If you go right, you dodge the same three hazards over and over and over and over until you get to the end and there's nothing. Turns out you had to go left so you have to go back through the level and then to the left where you'll find a key and then need to go back right. Which then takes you back to the level before and you need to back track through that to find the door you need to unlock.

Yep, short game. The Boss has 3 stages.

1st Stage (not shown) just his hands. Fire occasional bullets, fly at you, easy fare.
2nd Stage: Upper Skeleton. Hit the face. He shoots fireballsthat can't hit you at the top of the screen, but his hands track you, fly at you and shoot bullets. You may lose a life you you stupidly fly down to avoid a hand and hit a fireball, or vice versa.
3rd Stage: Just the head. He surrounds himself with 4 others the circle him. First part is flying in between the gaps, second is dodging as they 4 fly at you in a straight line.

Game is done, collecting end screen now

What comes after a robo-spider in space? Did you guess an underwater stage? Didn't think so.

Actually, this level is interesting. So after you blow up the spider, you just drift off into space until some space outlaws pick you up. So this is actually a hybrid stage. There's normal space ship rooms on this ship, but then there's some kind of water traveling system. You get on this bike and travel around the water to get to other parts of the ship.

Which is just a huge fuck you stage. It's a vertical shmup stage. Which, that's fine but the controls here are so fucking awful. There's such a big delay from when you press the button to when you move. It's not a lag issue, they just wanted to put weigh behind your movement. Which is fine but you have to dodge these huge structures, bullets, lasers, and shoot down barriers.

It also doesn't use a mode7 effect like on the world map of RPG's. It's more like a rolling effect. Things stretch out near the bottom.

Also funny to note. Anyone who has seen that Factor 5 N64 interview thread. This was also a Factor 5 game.

This game could have definitely been as good or better than Contra 3 as well. I think some of the control design holds this game back. But it has some great music and stage design. If you could shoot in even 4 directions it would have been at least 25% better.

Right now I'm wandering the desert, figuring out not to go on certain screens because instant death.

On a scale of 1 to Hitchhikers Guide to the galaxy, how easy is it to screw myself over

I'm starting to get fucking bothered with this level. The half-block movement is both nice and a bane of my existence. Moreover, I have no idea if this is actually the right way to do this level or if I'm going about it the entirely wrong way.

There just seems to be no other way to do it, but if this is the right way, then it requires such precise movement that it seems barely possible.

Well fuck that. The metal spider thing caused me lots of grief. Managed to luck out and have it land on the other side of the skeleton, giving me a chance to run.

After escaping to on top, you fll into an undergroud cave, with puzzles you nee to solve with bits you've (hopefully) grabbed from the game. Sticky plant stops the tentacles, reflective glass reflects lasers back onto themselves for explosions. The Acid is the worst, its just timing but that voice clip of I'm melting' is a new rage trigger.

Anyway, you get to this hologram, and unless you grabbed a translator thingie from back on the ship (which the game doesn't tell you what it does) you're screwed. Giant alien head here wants me to kill an Orat. He sends me to the surface to go kill it.

My plan? Lure that fucking exploding spider to the cave, then let it blow up and get rid of both problems. I return the piece, and go into a secret back room. I install the cartridge to learn the information about the Star Generator, then be on my way.

I think I will play this instead of skipping

After the 'fun' that is the skimmer section, you arrive in town. Well, 3 buildings but whatever. This guy offers to buy the skimmer from you. Turn him down, though, at least at first.

Then head to the bar. Can't do much (except hit on the 3-titted space chick and realize that ZZ Top is playing) so you head back out and our friend as a better deal.

You take the bar coupon to the bar, have a few drinks, then you overhear a conversation about the guys who attacked your ship at the beginning of the game. Then the blue guy on the slots get vaporized (it's the slots-o-death)and you can earn some money.

Back at the start, I picked up some doohickey, and it's info tells you to not put it on gaming devices. Naturally, you're supposed to put it on the slot machine to rig it so you can't lose. After breaking it due to excessive winning, you go to Droids-B-Us (which is chock full of shout-outs) to get yourself a navigator droid. Then off to the dodgy second hand ship dealer to buy a ship. I'm at the point where I need to enter the code to go to the sector mentioned.

And all done. Wow that was short.

We fly off and find the Sarian ship. I put on my jet pack and fly down there while my robots gets out of dodge. Inside is sneaky time. You have to hide for a bit until a robot comes in to clean up, and you sneak out behind him. You then start crawling through vents. Eventually, you end up in a room with a dryer. Hide inide, and a Sarian puts his clothes in and starts the cycle. You end up in a uniform so you can freely walk about. Grab the ID card that's on the floor as well.

After walking around and getting lost, I find the armory. I get a gun (and steal a grenade), drop the grenade on the big guy in front of the Star Generator to take him out. On my way back down, I trip and lose my helmet, requiring me to shoot people if they spot me.

Deactivate the force field, input the code, then get the hell out of there.

It's a golf game. Woo?

Anyway, after some futzing around, I found out that each continue gets me 3 holes. A birdie gives me a bonus hole, Bogey's take an extra hole. The Console version has unlimited continues, but the Arcade obviously uses credits.

So, after I go do some shit I need to do, I'm going to tackle this game. I'm only going to give myself 3 credits per course (there are 4). This way I need to shoot a 9 under minimum to finish a course (for those who don't into golf, that means doing the entire course in 9 shots less than what the designers believe an average player will complete a course in, meaning I'm going to have to be very decent to win this)

Some of the holes are real jimmy rustlers. Like a hole inside of bowl, but the bowl lip is stupidly high, so your approach shot gets you at the base on the other side, and you have to lob a shot well over, meaning you overshoot.

Or shooting from an island over some cliffs that are higher than your tee off.

In any case, Australian course down. I've already gotten a Congratulations screen,so technically I could probably go onto the next level. But I said I'd beat all 4 courses, so here goes
