this is a good sceenshot, but it should have more varied characters. Like, 3 screenshots have the same Gotenks vs Fat Buu, 2 have Piccolo vs Freeza, and 2 have Gohan vs Cell. There should be some different pairings there to showcase the roster.

Maybe it could also use some of the other BGs, like the Namek one. But then you'd need a 4x3 (or 3x4) layout...

It's amazing how rushed this game was and how it shows. The animations look like something made in Fighter Maker, nothing connects and characters end up just flailing around. Final Bout COULD have been good if it had more time, less clones in the roster (so many Saiyans) more female fighters like 18 and less focus on GT.

No, I think that ultimately it was just straight up nothing. There wasn't anything there to unlock, anyway. Of course, the rumors of unlocking Yamcha, Tien, etc. were big back then on the gamefaqs board for the game.
At any rate, this game ruled, the novelty of playing as any character was really huge to me. Even shit like Guldo could be picked. I think before the Budokai Tenkaichi games, it was the DBZ game with the biggest playable roster.

There wasn't any reason to have multiple characters for transformations other than:

1. We have to design a mechanic around transformation and detransformation probably based on ki and stuff, and give it risks and rewards compared to the base state
2. Even if we did we'd have to balance out characters who are instagood with no transformation at all and making sure there are no OP chars (not like the actual FB is a fine example of balance, but bear with me)
3. After doing all these trims and fixes, we are left with an abysmal roster, especially when compared to the other games on the system, like the "prequel" UB27.
4. We're shit out of time.


Characters actually do transform in battle, if you use a base state Saiyan and get into an heavy meteor finisher. This should be enough to prove they toyed with the idea and the tech was there. Finally, the fact that Pan is by far the most broken character is nothing but the final nail to testify the game didn't receive proper testing and could have used more time.

Because the majority of the evil cast was from Z. From a story perspective, it made sense to include Z forms to fight them with.
Even then, it would have made much more sense to have SSJ 1 and 3, since almost nothing changes from 1 to 2, and have GT alternate costumes rather than taking up a character slot.

Also, there's another Goku form in the game, SSJ4. But at least that one's different enough.

That game has a ki bar, the ki depletes when you use too much fireballs and you're open to attacks.
The key in SB2 is to manage melee and projectiles intelligently.
I bet you wouldn't last me 15 seconds on a match in this game.

My god if only this was a thing. Dragon Ball replaced the Tobal IP, with the same fighting system as Tobal 2 AND the quest mode. Shit, the teenage me would have had a fucking heart attack. Not saying Tobal is bad by any means, just that the DB IP replacing it would have been magical.

Best is not retro and is DB AA. Retro is Hyper Dimension and Butouden 2 is close, but Hyper Dimension just feels better and the presentation is amazing. Butouden 2 soundtrack takes the cake though

It doesn't, controls are tight and responsive. The rolling airjump mechanic also adds some depth to it, can do some crazy fast shit if you know what you're doing, but even without using that mechanic it's a great platformer.
It's a game with good gameplay and good graphics. But yeah it needs to be played on a CRT, otherwise many of the details get stretched and lost on modern screens with upscalers.

Hitboxes often work in favor of the player, I agree they're not pixel-perfect, but whenever I play DKC, it has a nice flow to it, hitboxes work fine, even though they're weird sometimes, it's not a problem.
I disagree about bland level design, I can't think of one boring level in the game.
The sequels improved on it, but the original is still ace. And it's arguably whether 3 is better than 1 or not. It's technically better and more variated, but some people prefer 1's more straightforward platforming no-gimmick design, and better music too.

I really enjoyed Legend Of The Super Saiyan. It really captured the progression of the series, where you were on a real adventure finding dragon balls and getting stronger. Just a shame that in combat the characters had no faces, and SS Goku had his regular hair style only in yellow
