I call this game retro no matter what, even if it's in 2001.

Of course it's retro. It's for a pre-6th gen console.

>> No.442230

as you should. it was released on hardware that predates 1999

>> No.442308

This game is actually kinda rare, for a mario game.

Doesn't even run on emulators right.

This game, this fucking game.

Beat it yesterday, it's so comfy and FUN all the way through, it's impossible to get bored with it. The writing is really good, and the localization is one of the best I've seen on RPGs.

PJ64's default video plugin has some flickering issues

Other plugins exist which fix this issue

shy guy's toy box is boring.

>> No.442504

I politely disagree, I think both 5 and 7 are god tier. 5 had those tiring swimming from island to island sequences, but then there was all dat jungle exploran, and dat laval dungeon, with dat piranha plant boss fight, surely a god tier worthy chapter. Not to mention the overall atmosphere full of yoshies and tropical good vibes.
7 was good because it has the coolest dungeon hands down, and also possibly most awesome event in the game (the whole murder case part)

Pretty sure he was talking about missing textures, not flickering.

Why am I seemingly the only one who liked Chapter 2 the best?

Not retro, but what does /vr/ think about the sequels?

I like them but in descending interest

The original will always win my heart

Nostalgia aside, I liked PM2 at least as much as PM. I thought the others were shit.

It's a cool theme but the level design is too simple and straight forward

Loved the new one, but i just couldn't bother with 2. So much fucking backtracking, it's ridiculous.

>> No.442639

TTYD is the perfect sequel. It improved the formula in every way.

Everything afterward is shit though

>> No.442661

>>442640
Only chapter 2 has a lot of backtracking. It's also the low point of the game.
What gets me through it is knowing Glitz Pit is immediately afterward.

>> No.442669

>>442639
It improved the mechanics. The atmosphere and characters in PM were better. If PM had TTYD's mechanics, it would be flawless.

I respectfully disagree. I felt PM1's atmosphere was slightly more bland and formulaic while TTYD was more unique.

>> No.442713

Pretty much this 1000%. As much as I liked TTYD, I feel it didn't best the original because the first had better atmosphere.

No. No, it's not. You

>> No.442786

>>442745
What other chapters had excessive backtracking? It's been a while since I've played the game. I only remember Chapter 2 because it was particularly bad there.

On second thought, Cortez's chapter (the one on the island) had some backtracking but it wasn't really an issue since it's easy to dodge the enemies. Those are the only ones I can think of.

>> No.442862

>>442786
The one with the moon. Good god, having to backtrack the ENTIRE GAME only to end up where you were before is straight up retarded.

Also, if you wanted to do a side mission, well, get ready for some serious backtracking!

>> No.442883

>>442862
You're going to have to elaborate because you've completely lost me.
TTYD certainly had more backtracking than PM1 but i never thought it to be a problem outside of Chapter 2.

>> No.442918

>>442883
You... you haven't beaten the game, have you?

Near the end of the game, you have to get to the moon, but the guy who can get you there went missing, so you have to look for him in the towns of all the areas in the game, in a specific order while going through the same tunnels over and over, after that's done, you then have to go back to where you started and SURPRISE, he was there all along.

You win this round.

I still think it was a better game. It had a few hiccups but in general I liked it more.

>Only chapter 2 has a lot of backtracking.
What? Chapter 4 is almost entirely made up of backtracking. You go to a from Creepy Steeple like 6 times.

>> No.443008

I remember renting this game from blockbuster with very low expectations. I honestly thought it was going to be a complete joke but still worth trying for a cheap laugh. It turned out to be the best game I played on the 64 and still one of the best games I have ever played. It just did everything perfectly, even better than chrono trigger did in my opinion. I have played many games over the decades but I think this is the one I remember the most.

>> No.444214

>>442576
TTYD is easily one of my favourite games of all time. My dad and I both played it and shared many an injoke. He had an advantage over my brother and I in that he didn't have to go to school, and got home before us from work, and managed to play through the game three or four times.

Oh, and we also enjoyed the first one.
