4420790 No.4420790 [Reply] [Original]

So from my understanding there are two versions of this game. The original for gameboy and DX for gameboy advance. Which one is the best version to play (you can suggest other versions if others exist)? I played the original back when I was a child and I want to replay it now since I just replayed ALTTP.

>> No.4420795

DX was for Game Boy Color. I played the original when it came out. I have DX on my 3DS but still haven't gotten around to playing it.

The dx version. It's color and there's an extra dungeon to go with it. Woo! Otherwise, i'm sure there's a hack or updated one somewhere on the internet. I just got it not too long ago. Annd I have to restart it 'cause I havent played it in awhile and forgot what I was doing

>> No.4420802

The DX version is largely the same as the original Link's Awakening. In a nutshell:

-DX version has color when used in a Game Boy Color. It still is compatible with original GB.
-DX version has an additional, optional dungeon that uses color as a gimmick
-Game Boy Printer compatibility
-Minor dialogue tweaks

>>4420802
There's also that photograph gimmick too in the DX version.

So essentially there's no reason for me to play the original colorless version outside of nostalgia, and the DX version is the definitive version?

>>4420807
Unless you really want to use some version only glitches, yeah.

>> No.4420839

>>4420807
Everything in the original version is in the DX version. Whether the DX version's handful of minor add-ons are of interest is a matter of preference.

>> No.4420847

I suppose the biggest thing the original game has going for it is that it has so many exploits, glitches and bugs that you can turn all the sprites into garbled artifacts, make all the non-NPC sprites disappear, or beat the game in a few minutes, all thanks to a few well-timed presses of the Select button.

>> No.4420856

>>4420847
The doghouse glitch exists in DX, but you can't skip screens with the select button. Either way DX is better for a first time playthru until OP wants to check out glitches in more detail.

Well, its GBC color. Which blows. Black and white at least lets you imagine that the palette is something cool.

Okay so I went through my drawers and found my old gameboy games. I have Link's Awakening DMG-ZL-USA-1.

On emuparadise I see three versions of the DX version.
>Link's Awakening DX
>Link's Awakening DX (Rev A)
>Link's Awakening DX (Rev B)

Which one will give the closest experience to the one I have?

>> No.4421185

The Rev versions are just slightly altered versions that fix some minor bugs or some shit, nothing worth thinking too hard about. Get rev B.

Rev A fixes some tiny graphic bugs (the only one anyone is really going to notice is the non-flashing marker on the map, which looks a bit odd) and rev B has some minor text changes, most of which a typo corrections. It's all pretty irrelevant stuff.

Thank you both. I will get Rev B then. Really excited to play this it's been at least a decayed since I've replayed it and coming fresh off of ALTTP I'm craving more 2d Zelda.

Last question, since I am going to play Minish cap afterwards is there any difference here or should I go with the E version? I've never actually played minish cap before.

Thanks. I'm having a new problem now though. I'm using archive.org to access the nintendo roms before they were taken down. There's a captcha that never loads. Is there any way around this or is emuparadise no longer a way to get roms even with using the archive?

I personally prefer the original in monochrome, but they're both good.

DX is another excuse to buy a printer though.

Well I don't think I have my original gameboy and the original copy I have is in color when I put it on my gameboy advance. Doesn't look as colorful as the DX version though it's like a weird psuedo coloring. Been so long since I used a GBA I forgot it colored in old games.

Does /vr/ generally regard awakening to be better than the oracle games?

>> No.4424346

>>4423772
Each game has their strengths, but I prefer the straight-forward overworld design of LA, and that it's the progenitor of the two oracle games gives it points in my book.

Oracles go a little overboard with making the overworld a puzzle as well, which can get a little tedious getting from point A to B. They're all fantastic games.

>> No.4425980

>>4420790
Original is best. DX version bonus dungeon item destroys game balance, and you can't 100% it without becoming a THIEF.

>> No.4426171

Yes, too much influence from the later 3D titles in the Oracle games and it shows up in many of the design choices that I won't go into now. Oracles are good games, LA is a great game. Oracles do have some better puzzles though.

>DX version bonus dungeon item destroys game balance

You don't have to pick up any tunic. you can do the extra dungeon through, kill its boss, and exit through the front door. that's what I do every time.

> and you can't 100% it without becoming a THIEF.

You're talking about a single photo in a bonus sidequest made for the GB printer, which wasn't in the original game... way to blow things out of proportions. Besides, this sidequests adds some new cutscenes, which are quite comical.
