Because I already beat every Klonoa game other than Heroes. Yes, even that shitty Wonderswan game, the pointless GBA games that bastardized the plot, and the volleyball game that had funny ending cutscenes and not much else to it.

I also plan to watch the anime film when it drops, hope they conclude Ariga's awesome webcomic in it. Shit, I wonder if the manga is canon too, I read that ages ago actually lol.

Nice crosspost from v, BTW dude.

You seem to be an Expert.

Rate Klonoa 1,2, GBA1 and GBA2 from 1-10. In turn I will you my opinion.

I've beaten Klonoa 1 just 5 minutes ago. I loved the plot twists in the end, I was on the verge of tears. I also love how the last battle consisted of 3 battles. The battle against Gadius was amazing too, it literally felt like a nightmare with the eery, odd music. I also love that you can select levels now and even try to get all 150 crystals. Next I will probably finish Klonoa 2, then the GBA Klonoas. Of course I will try to 100% all.

Alright, try as hard as you can to avoid spoilers for 2. The story blows the first game away.

The timeline goes

Moonlight Museum -> Door to Phantomile* -> Empire of Dreams -> Door to Phantomile bonus mission and ending -> Lunatea's Veil -> Dream Champ Tournament -> Beach Volleyball -> Ariga's webcomic (officially confirmed to be canon via Namco's statements)

* = the remake may have displaced the original as canon but since no further games were made it's impossible to tell for certain

The Heroes timeline is just Heroes and then the manga I believe. I've seen a longplay of Heroes with translated text but there's no romhack yet so that's the best I've managed, wish I could read moon runes but oh well.

But all jokes aside I'd honestly rec just playing Klonoa 1, then Klonoa 2, then maybe checking the ending cutscenes for Volleyball as they give some backstory for some of Klonoa 2's cast of characters and maaaaybe reading the webcomic, that is if you don't mind it being unfinished forever

For my personal ratings I'd say
Door to Phantomile: 9/10
Moonlight Museum: 3/10
Lunatea's Veil: 10/10
Empire of Dreams: 5/10
Dream Champ Tournament: 5.5/10
Beach Volleyball: 4/10
Door to Phantomile remake: 6.5/10

(If you want justifications for any of my opinions I'd have to give them in another post due to text limits)

Some links for obscure pieces of media, avoid since they contain spoilers for 2:

Also if you like the dream world aesthetic of Klonoa, I'd definitely recommend a few other "dream game" platformers like Cocoron, Kirby Super Star, Kirby 64, Rayman Origins, and Mr. Gimmick. NiGHTS into Dreams is probably the most acclaimed dream game but it's not a platformer and I'm not personally fond of it so w/e. Ardy Lightfoot is literally the prototype to Klonoa but I don't think it's so great other than concept wise, albeit the game is less than an hour long.

Noice, my reply will not be long, but I definitely read it all and saved your links. What always amazed me were the boss battles. Far superior to Spyro and Crash IMO (altough I love these games too).

Anyway thanks for your time.

I played Rayman and Kirby, I will check the other titles out eventually.

I can recommend Tomba too. It is pretty dreamlike IMO, 2.5D and you can throw enemies like in Klonoa too! But you probably already know it.

It's a competent remake aside from the voice acting. The 3D models are pretty good, there's a bit of bonus content like costumes to keep the experience somewhat fresh, it runs fluidly enough, etc. It just doesn't feel like it changes up enough things compared to the original to stand out and is definitely a more casualized experience meant to introduce the Wii audience to the series. I'd only rec it for hardcore fans who want to experience everything from the franchise or young children who would be turned off from sprite-based games I guess

Joka's voice is very sexy though

As I said, they are more puzzle oriented than the console Klonoas. I believe the GBA games put more emphasis in putting blocks and searching for keys. Also both games have bonus stages and, fortunately, not a single interruption in gameplay to play a cutscene.

I had a lot of fun with both games. I can't recommend them enough.

All 3 of the handheld Klonoa puzzle games have huge amounts of cutscenes though, particularly at the beginnings/end of worlds and during boss stages.

The bonus stages are pretty meh since they recycle the exact same thing endless times which aren't even that fun to begin with.

I don't have a problem with the puzzle-oriented gameplay but the complete lack of memorable soundtracks the console games are known for as well as repetition and boring landscapes like the desert or water levels make it a slog.

The boss battles aren't anything to write home about either especially considering a lot of them consist of just running away to the end of a stage without ever seeing them, let alone Moonlight Museum that doesn't even have boss fights at all.

Overall they have some interesting elements but it's kinda hampered by the fact they force each layout to be the same, 30 collectibles, 3 keys, 5 mcguffin things iirc, etc. Also the controls weren't exactly smooth either (especially compared to Klonoa 1 and 2) which just makes it more annoying to go through.

Worst of all however, even putting the shallow OCs aside and the mediocre at best plots, the stories are unforgivably awful because they effectively retcon half the series and many of the emotional plot twists no longer have any weight. Heroes at least had the excuse of being an alternate timeline so it was allowed to get away with fanservicey shit.

If you still like the games despite their flaws then that's all fine and dandy but they really aren't true Klonoa games in the slightest.

It maybe not a great Klonoa game, but still it's an awesome puzzle platafformer for the GBA.
I suppose it's a matter of taste, although both games got pretty good reviews.

Does the Wii game get harder after the first 3 levels? Does the gameplay expand beyond grabbing enemies and jumping with them or throwing them? The visuals are great but I just can't sink anymore time into this if I'm gonna get bored quickly.

Some topics are better discussed on here, others are better discussed on v. For example, vr threads of some games like Mega Man won't devolve solely into "I wanna fuck Roll-chan <3!" like on v. On the other hand, trying to have a Chrono Trigger thread on here is a waste of your time and will only result in an absolute trackwreck of a thread, whereas on v Chrono Trigger threads are always comfy as fuck
