If this was released instead of the 32x, could it have saved Sega's reputation?

No Saturn. "Neptune" with a Sega CD should have been the console that got all the games and the hardware team should have got the Dreamcast out even earlier.

Wouldnt the SEGA Neptune be obsolete anyways? The Saturn was on the way no matter what

Why wasn't the 32x just upgraded Genesis carts like Virtua Racing so you didn't need a new retarded system?

$100 games, but high quality releases.

The idea is that the Neptune should have launched instead of the 32X, and maybe they should have pushed the Saturn back instead of trying to go toe to toe with Sony

The only way SEGA could have saved themselves in America is if the CD and 32X never happened and they jumped straight to Saturn.

The only way they could have saved themselves in Japan is if the Dreamcast never happened. The Japanese liked the Saturn just fine and out of nowhere SEGA just said the Saturn is on the chopping block. They lost all confidence in SEGA after that.

Yeah but I really quite like those games. Virtua racing, smoother console versions of Space Harrier and After Burner, Tempo, Kolibri, Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000, Metal Head, Motocross Championship and FIFA 96 are all games I'd definitely play and there's a couple more I'm kind of interested in. I'll not lie, being kind of a fan cunt is likely a factor in this.

Not him, but it was actually $200 where I was. It was pretty much its own console, practically, but you had to have a Sega Genesis to use it. not the best thought out add-on.

>> No.4424673

>>4423173
Knuckles Chaotix isn't the worst thing ever, but it's far from a good game. Kolibri is some fun shit, though. Other suggestions I'd give are After Burner, MetalHead, T-Mek, The Star-Wars Arcade and Cosmic Carnage. Doom on 32x was pretty bad, even though I have a boxed copy from way back when.

Neptune: beefed up 32X with a competent VDP1/VDP2-like GPU, 4MB of RAM. Embedded 68k+Z80 in one die for heavy I/O usage enables backwards compatibility with previous console.

Saturn: same as Neptune, but fit with a CD drive and RAM cart support by using the same slot as Neptune games and a chip for decoding video like PS1. Basically the Neptune, but for rich people. Neptune users could buy a very limited CD add-on later in the console's life to get Saturn games without having to get another console.

Neptune: 250$
Saturn: 399$
Later Neptune CD add-on (codename Pluto): 99$

Of course in this reality the 32x never got beyond design phase.

>> No.4424765

>>4424751
Having backwards compatibility was never an option, since the Megadrive failed horribly in Japan, and the team designing the Saturn was in japan.

Saturn actually had two versions initially. A cartridge-only one called Jupiter, that could be upgraded with a cd-addon; Saturn was the version with the cd addon built-in. They scrapped the idea because they thought correctly that people would not buy the cheaper version. Traces of this design can be seen in the launch model saturns, which have the CD logic (the SH1 cpu) in a removable daughter card.

>> No.4424785

I still maintain the 32x should have just been an SVP card add-on. Working with or without the MegaCD, it still would have been better than the abortion they got instead.

Prolly would've been easier for game devs to work with too.

>> No.4424831

>>4424751
I'll never understand this. Basically, they should have just made 32x it's own machine, made it more powerful, so it could handle Saturn or psx level games, called it whatever the fuck (because who cares) and just stuck with it till Dreamcast. No Saturn, because it sucked ass anyway. No add ons or expansions because that shit's just stupid. Use carts with larger size limits (at least on par with n64) and just keep up with what's popular, rather than pushing the stupid shit they did. Amid all this, they release a second sonic trilogy, and a scond game with lock on, akin to s&k. With these simple steps, they remain contenders and everyone doesn't forget Sega exists by 1996 in all regions but Japan.

There, fixed it for you

Knuckles Chaotic is unplayable shit. Decent tech demo, but the level design is an utterly boring copy paste job.

Star Wars Arcade is pretty good, Kolabri is good. NBA Jam is a good port. Wrestlemania is good. That's about it not counting DOOM which is better played other ways.

Specifically on PC. Haven't tried the PS1 version, does it allow for circle strafing?

>> No.4425413

Nope
32X was pretty much superfluous. It was a desperate attempt to catch the tail end of 4th gen 3D and make enhanced MD games. They should've let MD and Mega CD just retire before the Saturn.

>> No.4425442

32x should have been released as the cartridge portion of the saturn. Would have given more impetus to play to strrengths. Beef up the library

>> No.4425512

>>4425072

You have to consider while Doom was a shitty port, most people had shitty PCs so they weren't getting a much better experience then on the 32x. Not having had a computer as a kid, Doom on console was a gift from the gods and I never noticed the smaller screen or other sacrifices really. It still blew the SNES version out of the water except for music.

>> No.4425521

>>4424660
How is that worse than the Xbox One S though? At least with the 32X you could buy a used MegaDrive to lower the price. I think having it as an addon rather than a separate console makes it more accessible if anything.

>> No.4425539

>>4424831
Once word got out that the 32X was originally an addon for the MegaDrive people will view the console as last gen tech and not on par with the N64 with it's SIXTY FOUR BIT COMPUTING or the PS1 and it's sleek start of the art CD drive and Sony's reputation of superiority in the electronic sphere. I'm not say that's the truth in any way but there would be tons of stupid consumers who would listen to the disinfo and it would probably servery hamper the console.

I said it once I'll say it a thousand times.

Sega Cd was 1x speed. Sega should have released a Sega Cd2 with 2x speed, with the 32x built in. Not the 32x per se but up to Saturn spec. Would have increased speed for late sega cd adopters. Would have been a no brainer addon for genesis users and kept backward compatibility. No use in selling a system with a new cd drive when you already have one. Would have saved money. Genesis cartidge slot would have replaced the memory slot on the saturn. Its all hindsight.

That said, people don't realize 32x was a bigger failure than they want to believe. It only sold well because it went down to bargain bin prices ($50) imagine how bad it would have sold numbers-wise if all those people didnt scoop it up when it was being practically given away..

It really is what Starfox 3 would have imagined being. I love the graphics, they are impressive given the SF3 analogy, but I can't get over that fake flickering sun. It really ruins it for me. Why did they go with that? It really goes down with worst blunder of gaming with ET in my book

Sega should have reduced the price of the SVP chip and kept releasing new genesis games until 1996. I was still buying Sonic 3D blast on genesis in 96 and people still would have supported it. Knuckles Chaotix could have very easily been a standard genesis or Saturn title. The Sega CD was already enough add-ons they didnt need anymore inbetween consoles. Sega needed to fucking focused on the Saturns 3D capabilities and getting more 3rd party support and localizations of 2D Jap games in America.
