Opinions on this remake? Is it better or worse than the original SNES version?

>> No.4416892

way better than the SNES version, aside from the midget artstyle

It's ambitious, but maybe too ambitious. A lot of mechanics from later games in the series are retconned in and make otherwise simple tasks more involved than they should be.

My biggest issue with it is the sheer amount of loading. Areas are broken up into small forked paths. Every time you take a fork, the screen fades out and loads the next path. So instead of simply walking through an open field to get from point A to point B, you walk through a labyrinth of dozens of screens filled with forked paths and transitional intervals. Not every map is broken up like this, but it's frequent enough to cause a headache. You'll encounter such maps shortly after starting Sif's or Hawke's scenario.

Is it better or worse? I don't think the two versions can really be compared. RS for PS2 is almost a completely different game.

I never played because it looks like shit to be honest. Maybe I should give it a chance.

Making it the "SaGa's Greatest Hits" with mechanics was the best thing they did. They gave a reason for this remake to exist because all that really stayed the same was the scenario. Everything else was built from the ground up and had the added complexity from many other SaGa games. Hell it even had field skill usage like Unlimited, even though it is more limited in scope than what you can use them for in Unlimited.

I have Romancing Saga and Unlimited Saga, never played any Saga games, which one should I try first?

Romancing SaGa for sure

If you really enjoy tabletop games then Unlimited. But it's a bit too obtuse and complicated

You might be better off not playing Unlimited Saga at all, ever in your life.

Put both of them away for later. As >>4416908 said, MS has a million complicated mechanics from other games.

Get SaGa2/Final Fantasy Legend 2, SaGa Frontier or Romancing SaGa 3, whichever looks the most appealing to you.

Agreed, it's fucking crack.
I got back into it a few days ago to give it another try (3rd time's the charm), and played it five hours a day for the whole week.
Got my ass handed to me by the Round Table Knights (Ventus)
Got halfway through the Seven Wonders (Ruby).
Then I noticed I was playing the shitty PAL version.
Now I'm doing Judy's and it's not going well at all...maybe? It's kinda hard to tell, actually.

I'm starting to understand how people playing roguelike for 100+hours feel like.

Considering the Romancing games introduced a lot of bullshit mechanics, no it's not. There's innovation, and then there's tedious for the sake of being tedious. RS is an example of the latter. One literally requires a strategy guide not only to understand the sheer density of mechanics used in the RS remake, but to progress through the game without getting screwed over by the battle rank system as well. The flimsy manual included with the U.S. release barely touches the tip of the iceberg.

Unlimited is one of those games where player skill simply doesn't matter. Every mission is luck-based. Character progression is luck-based. Every random encounter is luck-based. Are you starting to see a pattern here? The random number god pretty much decides your fate in every given aspect of the game. If you like save scumming and forfeiting hours of progress due to arbitrary time limits, save point starvation and completely randomized outcomes, then Unlimited Saga is the game for you. Otherwise, don't bother.

>Every mission is luck-based
Dungeon layout is fixed, treasures are a luxury, not a necessity.
Panels you get is dependent on your actions, like other SaGa games.
There's no more luck involved in encounters than your average DQ clone.
The only egregious part is getting mimic to drop magic tablets, most people savescum those.
Using Tetra Force or copying the System Data along with the quicksave to another MC/using ulaunchelf
>time limits
Yeah, about that...Here's the thing: Main quest mission don't have one, so if there's a time limit you're kinda doing grinding on the side which is a bad thing to do until you get a full party. You're probably better off waiting until you get the final Main mission until getting them done. Of course, the game has no conveyance of that whatsoever so I wouldn't expect everyone to catch on to that.
Most mission have some trial-and-error bullshit you're supposed to glean around from experience, they're more of a long-term investment.
Here's a quick breakdown:
>Quest Adventure
Gather some Herb, just do that one, ignore the rest.
>Monster Extermination Adventure
This is what you do when you want high level panel, Level is dependent on the number of monster killed since last panel distribution.
It doesn't reset with Time out (I think) so don't feel too bad about that.
>Boss Adventure
Rush to the end and attempt some spark.
An easy way to fill panels if some new recruits are lagging behind.

Good luck!

Getting screwed and making mistakes is part of the fun in SaGa games. You don't need a strategy guide to progress, none-the-less complete the game. Would you probably need one to see everything? Yeah, but then the same could be said of all JRPGs.

There isn't anything bullshit about battle rank, it is to progressively challenge the player and to cock block people who think mindless power grinding will give them an easy way to steam roll most content. Event rank is probably one of the best things ever, but most people that play JRPGs seem to have OCD and they hate any concept that a quest can appear and vanish without their knowledge at all. I like that concept because it is a world that progresses, with or without your involvement unlike other games that nothing happens until you the hero makes things happen.

Sparking is my favorite way to learn skills hands down. Every battle can bring about a new skill.

This isn't even mentioning the battle point system that was introduced in the remake that balances the ability to utilize skills during battle while still having resources to fight bosses.
