Yes the Saturn controller actually had the best one. A lot of people foolishly give credit to Nintendo for making the best D-Pad but this actually isn't the case at all. In fact their D-Pads tore up your thumb after enough use. Even Sony gave us an upgrade to the Nintendo D-Pad. Their handhelds however have good D-Pads because they don't pop out and are rough like the ones on the controllers.

Its a real shame people are never going to realize how good of a controller the Saturn had. It is the perfect controller for 2D games.

Pic related, it's pretty arguable if this is even a "d pad" though as it's more like a miniaturized and flattened arcade stick which can lead to arguments claiming d-pads are actually superior to sticks because of shorter travel which the neo geo pad also negates.

As far as the classic contenders, I think Nintendo has proved their cross-style controller is the easiest to get right and has been pretty right for a long time. If your thumb gets "torn up" from an NES pad's "sharp edges" then you've got some soft girly thumbs. The actual corners of the original pad are much more painful. Sony actually copied Nintendo damn near identically internally but sacrificed smooth diagonals for softer "edges" (and legally distinct don't-sue-us design) although I have calloused my thumb from them as well, and even cracked the plastic between the legs from being too intense in my late teens.

The "round" d-pad is clearly harder to get right as the 360 controller demonstrates but the Saturn 2 and Genesis 2 controllers both did a pretty good job. I'm still amazed by how small the Genesis 6 button controller is. Having been smaller is weird.

I'm pretty sure that specific warlock (the PS2 version) was only released in Japan and are more common everywhere other than the Americas so if you're chink-adjacent you might be seeing real ones (or real 4 button, AES versions) if they look the same. If you mean Hori's fight pad series they are quite prolific but the microswitches are far smaller and weaker. You'll get a similar feeling from a 360 controller that's been "Pringles modded" and it'll probably be more durable since even well used 360 controllers usually still have pretty clean d pads. They are circular though. Neo Geo pads actually are similar in concept to Action Max (>>4412056) which like many Nintendo bran accessories began life as a third party MSX accessory.

>>4412376
>way too clicky
It's weird to me that people say this but I've been thinking about what the difference between us is. I think you learn to like clickiness from playing fighting games where you have to be ready to split frames while for example shmups where you need to react as fast and smoothly as possible with no resistance.

Of course, if pattern memorization is part of the game it seems to me like clicky would be better... I dunno, I rarely take games to that level at this point in my life. For casual gaming comfort and convenience are top priorities and when I add in my cheapness element, 360 controllers are hard to beat. Analog sticks could stand to wear better.

For certain genres keyboard & mouse are better. Fps, rts, point and click, western rpgs, roguelikes, sim games ( not the sims, but that too) and text adventures. Althought you can play platformers, beat em ups, shmups, fighting games and racing games on a keyboard & mouse, a controller is far better.

A control scheme for a game is directly related to its original platform release. Pacman feels best on an arcade joystick, pinball is only really good on a pinball machine. Diablo plays best with a m&kb, smb plays best with a nes controller etc...

I think the point OP was trying to make was, a dpad is not the best way to play a majority of games forced to use them because of consoles. Marvel vs. Street fighter plays great on a cabinet, it is only acceptable on a dpad and it depends on the dpad. Same with a myriad if games for all consoles.

I don't know why d-pads are something that's so incredibly hard to get right. It's the core of the controller and yet everyone always seems to fuck it up one way or another.

Only pads I've liked are PS2 and PS3's. Haven't tried PS4 yet but looks like it's in the same vein so it's probably good too. My Xbone pad is god fucking awful and now I have to replace the whole controller just because the pad is unresponsive.

>It's the core of the controller
For your average Joe the core of the controller is the shape. Moreover now even platformers are often played on analogues, only people caring about dpads are us retrofags and an even smaller group - people who play fightans and shmups on pad.
>Haven't tried PS4 yet but looks like it's in the same vein so it's probably good too.
I play on DS4 and I hate it, I constantly press diagonals when I don't mean to. I don't remember having same problems with DS3 or 2. I can't wait for that new Hori Mini wired controller to come out in 2 weeks.

Do you realize how many nu-males are in on the retro games craze these days? And I'd say the D-Pad is also really important for platformers too, which are popular as fuck.

But platformers aren't as demanding on the pad itself as shmups and fightan. I was going to make that point in my other post but I didn't want to be "inflamatory" but since I guess I am I'll go on to say that the majority of retro gamers are choosing their controllers based on nostalgia or hipsterism neither of which requires an objectively "good" dpad

Its not out yet but ps4 pad works with a lot of games right out of the box, and for the rest there is a great unofficial driver than can do a lot of stuff, like mouse control, media control, bluetooth and sixasis motions. So I think this one will work too since it's compatible with ps4 interface.

yeah, it's pretty different from a dpad. I'd compare it more to the 3DS circle pad than the PSP stick in terms of how it moves, but with the microswitches it feels a lot less shitty than both of those. I only use it for arcade games though, for precision stuff I'd rather just have a dpad.
