That pool of water is shallow because enemies were running into it, and if it's deep enough to submerge they end up in the lower linked sector completely instead of sticking halfway out. I think this is the reason you can wade around at the water's surface but enemies who aren't in the water won't see you.

I don't get all the bitching about GDX. Yeah it's missing the pixel shading, but aside from that and a couple of bugs, it's pretty much the best Blood experience you're going to get outside of having an old computer setup that can run it perfectly. A hell of a lot less finicky than dosbox too.

how is modding a game using the build engine compare to doom modding?

>> No.4386448

So I finally played enough of the game to judge it. Here is my first opinion on it. I'm playing the DOSBox version not Bloodgdx.

It is really hard. I tried the normal difficulty and it s very difficult so I had to lower it to the second difficulty. I died a couple times before getting to the second level. The second level I must have died a half dozen times even on the easier difficulty.

The controls aren't great. Its doable but it could control a lot better. Its also hard for me to tell if I'm getting shot by those illuminati guys. Also really wish you could keep attacking the axe enemies when they go down but don't die.

So it is a lot harder than Doom and Duke Nukem by a pretty good margin but a lot of it also seems to be thanks to the controls.

Now with that said I love the games atmosphere, the banter and the weapons seem pretty fun. At least the few that I used that is. The dynamites seem extremely good. I'll definitely try more but I'm guessing I would enjoy the game a lot more if I played Bloodgdx instead.

>> No.4386457

>>4386448
I don't think Blood is any harder than Duke 3D, but YMMV, of course.

What you have to understand first, that unlike the later shooters, movement is extremely important in Blood, since most enemies reactions times are very short and their attacks are hitscan (as in, they connect instantly without having any projectile reach you first). So what you have to do is always circle strafe, crouch and sometimes jump, in order to throw their aim off. Crouching in particular is very important as it significantly lowers the AI accuracy.

Use shotgun alt-fire and TNT as your main weapons. There's tons of TNT all over the levels, you'll never run out of it. The flare gun is not very useful apart from killing lone zombies, but its alt-fire and blow up a whole group of enemies. The tommy gun is mostly for mid to long range, doesn't do much damage and runs out of ammo pretty fast, but its long range accuracy is useful.

>> No.4386510

>>4386457
I tried it again on both easiest and normal difficulty just now. I got through the first level surprisingly on my first try on normal.

I find this game way harder than the other two games I said. I could actually put them on the hardest difficulty and get through some levels. I can't see myself doing that in this game at all. The cultists are way smarter than the enemies in the other shooters.

Yeah, that level's still got a couple of problems, like the fog disappearing when an explosive goes off. But eh, using palette 1 for everything in the sector is not really common and pretty hacky in the first place. None of the official maps do it.

One more thing, to anyone using GDX for playing DW. Do NOT install the skybox addon that comes as an extra with GDX, the textures are full color and won't take palette 1 adjustments. The voxel pack is totally fine though.

>> No.4387220

>fog disappearing when an explosive goes off

Oops, I take it back. This happens in DOSBox as well. I suppose the fog is really just darkness with white palette, so it obviously "lights up" during an explosion.

I don't know if maybe I need to tweak DOSBox or something here but I really don't get this whole downgrading graphics issue you guys keep going on about. I would rather better controls even if it sacrifices something. From what I seen GDX looks like an improvement across the board besides not staying completely true to the visuals even though it is very close anyways. The few levels I played its hard to see far off into the distance because of the graphics. The GDX videos I've seen seem to imply the game plays way better which to me should be most important. The aiming is really freaking finicky in this game, the DOS version I mean. I tried Duke on DOS and even though eDuke32 plays a lot better the DOS version of Duke at least doesn't control as bad as Blood.

>> No.4388086

That's because the original Build engine is a 2D game. You're literally looking at a 2D image pretending to be 3D. Take note of the shapes when you look up or down, walls will always stay as vertical lines, no matter what, you will never see them at an angle. This is the reason Doom doesn't allow you to look up or down, it just looks weird. Build is faking it by simply moving the viewpoint higher or lower and then doing a small zoom-in.

But anyway, yeah, it sure is nice to see Blood in true 3D.

I feel Jace Hall was never being entirely honest with the Blood community regarding his intentions in pursuing the rights to Blood. The more he heard what the community actually wanted to happen once he regained control of the rights to the first game (release it in the style of Duke and Shadow Warrior), the less enthusiastic he seemed to become. Near the end he became downright uncommunicative, and had to be hounded across multiple websites and platforms before he'd even reveal that he'd failed.

I think it may be for the best that never panned out.

Could someone please give me a setup guide for BloodGDX?

I got it to run and everything but my saves never stay when I quit the game.

It might have something to do with the version of blood I'm using.

I'm using One Whole Unit Blood (GOG version)

You can use whatever folder for saving BloodGDX config and save files Try a different one, I guess? This is the first option you see in the launcher.

Or you're probably being a retard and have Blood installed to Program Files.

Using BloodGDX. Suddenly I can't see messages any more, is there a way to re-enable them?
Also, how do you get the hands off if the screen goes dark? No amount of button mashing seems to get them off

>> No.4405347

>>4405320
Press F8 to disable/enable messages. Yes, it's close to F9 (quick load) and that's how you accidentally pressed it. No, you can't rebind it.

Mash the "use" button when you're being smothered by a hand.

I tried running this in DOSBox and got fucked up colors. Is there any way to fix this?

Am I supposed to do something else here? It's E2M10. I've used all the keys but the door won't open, on its own or with the use key.

You've not truly experienced the soundtrack of Blood until you've heard the Gravis version. Blows the normal synth the hell away.

Didn't find a thread about Blood in general so I guess I will ask here:
Can somebody give me a tip on getting cd audio working on gog version running through bloodgdx? I only have midi options in the launcher window. When I launch Dosbox - CD Audio works without any problems.

BloodGDX doesn't support CD audio (or CD rips) yet.

FUUUUUCCCCKKK

I don't wanna sound salty but that pissed me off. Not a fan of jump scares. Hoping that is the only one.

I flinched so hard that my cat got spooked by it.

The only place in DW that I got legit scared is the final part of the The Thing level. You enter a small cave, everything goes dark, there's a lot of screen shaking, weird sounds coming from everywhere, the boss screaming and tons of spiders everywhere. Almost got myself killed because I just started shooting in random directions.

>> No.4406596

>>4406587
Yeah that whole level was top notch, are those screams in the game files or did he rip them from the actual movie?

Anyway, that bit earned it's scare, unlike the cheap bullshit on black tower.

It's actually just rarely-heard spidermother sounds.

Best scare in the entire game, out of fucking nowhere. I loved it.

No it's not. This seems to be a common misconception. BloodGDX is based off of Blood retail 1.0 release but the leaked alpha source helped with decompilation. BloodGDX is somewhere between Blood 1.0 and 1.21 retail releases.

People that claim GDX is the same as the alpha are fully demonstrating how ignorant they are about the game. This is what Blood alpha gameplay looks like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10qOUnqu5Gc
