Why is it that there are so relatively few pure sidescroller platformers in the arcade considering how popular was this genre back then in the consoles (Mario, Sonic...)? At least compared to other genres such as shoot'em up, run and gun, fighting, beat'em up, racing, puzzle...

Not even the one in my pic is that much of a pure platformer since you shoot. Maybe they made less money for the operators? But how so? They could easily be adapted to not rely on checkpoints and have tighter scoring systems if that's the problem.

Magic Sword for SNES is a pretty good arcade port aside from having no multiplayer.

>Magic Sword
I'm not speaking specifically about ports, it's more about the lack of representation of this genre in the arcades while it was arguably the most popular in consoles at the same time.

And, again Magic Sword is cool but not much of a pure sidescroller platformer, right?

Maybe because it took too long to take your quarters so they made games like metal slug and splatterhouse instead.

>>4401846
I think they could have easily prevented this with tight time limits on stages and very hard platforming (places to fall to your death all over the place, etc.)
The Makaimura series exists and it was quite succesful, for example.
I don't see how they couldn't adapt the genre to operator demands. It's weird to me.

>>4401846
Bingo. They weren't popular in arcades because they weren't the most profitable.

>>4401853
This was something that arcade publishers tried, but it was never very successful. It's just not as profitable as other types of games.

Very interesting, could you give me examples of games where arcade publishers tried? I'm curious.

Most arcade runny jumpers I can think of come from a time when most people wouldn't have had a home console, or a pong machine at best. I can't think of many good ones.
Willow was good far as I remember though

It's a bit sad since I enjoy the standard of difficulty and sense of pace of arcade titles but I won't be enjoying it much within this genre. Oh well, at least I like the others a lot and plenty of console platformers come close.

The genre as a whole tended to be kinda slow-paced and relaxed back in the late 80s and 90s. There's only so much you can do while still making it as challenging as it needs to be.

The Wonder Boy games are pretty decent examples. Wonder Boy in Monster Land is a pretty cool example of an action adventure platformer as an arcade game.

And Trojan as well, which I'm pretty sure is based on GnG hardware. It's practically just a ROM hack of the game.

Sure, but you know exactly what I mean. Compare platforming challenges in those games to a Metal Slug game. While you can still attack the gameplay focus is entirely different.

They didn't even make a lot of runny-shooties or side-scrolling belt-scrollers after a point. With FTGs they finally found a way to kick at least one player off the game every five minutes no matter how gud they got. Otherwise every game had to support 3+ players simultaneously (BTGs and racing games) to generate maximum shekels. Something like Daimaikagoblins was very much an outlier by the late 80s.

Pure: The focus is mostly platforming: jumping challenges

RunGun: Light or almost no platforming, usually getting locked in some rooms until you beat everything, and you are constantly shooting stuff, often in multiple directions

Action Platformer: The platforming aspect is de-emphasized compared to the pure ones, though it's still there, like a mid point between the two previous ones. You usually have some form of melee combat and mechanics related to it and enemies are more resilient than in the pure ones where they die quickly (often in one hit) to keep the flow. Here that flow stops so you fight some stuff between jumping. Think of Castlevania and the room in the fifth stage with the knights (that take a lot of melee hits) and medusa heads, and while you have more platforming than in say Contra it's not like in DKC.

It's a bit of a spectrum so of course some games overlap. Mega Man is in-between pure platformer and run and gun. You shoot (a lot, and it's not a powerup, it's integral) but by default only in one direction, there aren't as many enemies on the screen at the same time, you aren't stopped to kill everything unless it's a boss at the end of a stage and it still has more platforming stuff you wouldn't find in say Metal Slug (disappearing blocks segments and shit). There's a reason some people summarize the series as "Jump and shoot".

I don't feel like going into more detail since I feel I'm being played here by some bait or shit, you guys here are usually like that. You understand me perfectly, and you did even before I wrote this, but I'll give it to you.
