That's a shame. But considering how jannky I remember it being at the time, I can imagine. I never liked the other games as much as it though and still the only game that ever gave me a jump scare. An HD VR remake with the same blocky weird graphics would probably be pretty genuinely horrific.

Randum fun fact: they filmed the movie in the town near where I grew up and I've hiked that creepy opening hole hundreds of times. I had no idea going in though, made for a surreal experience.

>but the combat is really horrible
I don't want to be that guy, but limited combat is kind of the point of a horror game. It makes normal encounters (like being mobbed by knife-wielding school-children fetus things) tense and scary.

There are actually a number of moves in the combat that make it more satisfying than RE, for example. You have the back-jump, you can wind-up and charge your attacks, you can do a powerful, but slow smash-down that usually knocks out/down enemies - on top of the guns you find. I don't think there is input lag outside of the slowdown you might find in a game this old.

And imo the game is pretty generous with health, so it's not like you'll be dying much unless you play on Hard, in which case you will get fucked repeatedly.

smooth because combat was more limited and clearly not a focus, since enemies are bullet-sponges anyhow (to say nothing of vanilla RE's lack of auto-aim). Hence i said "satisfying," because you have more movement options and combat moves in SH1, which lets you tackle a number of playstyles. Much like RE though, you are better off avoiding most encounters, at least until you get the Hammer. You're especially better off ignoring small enemies in many cases or using your pistol to pacify them quickly.

it sounds like you're saying you can charge and hold attacks, but you can't do that. it's just slice, double slice, and overhead/stab. and while the back-jump is neat, it isn't particularly useful due to its cooldown. walking backward, quickturning, and of course strafing while turning are still your best movement options around enemies.

also, hard isn't that bad unless it's your first playthrough and you aren't experimenting with how to tackle enemies. all enemies except the flyers and those hopping assholes (and maybe roaches, i forget) can be easily downed with at least one of your current melee weapons with the right setup/movement, attack type, and timing.

agreed on the lack of noticeable input lag, though. it's simply that attacks have varying startup times and harry doesn't go from zero to fast as soon as you tell him to move, but the former is good for balance and the latter meshes well with the game.

>>4398739
not that anon, but the proper way to experience /vr/ is in a closed space filled solely with oldschool awesomeness. for this thread, the year is 1999, and neither the game in question nor our perceptions of it (nor even our persons) have aged sufficiently to merit complaint.

banning is a bit mild, though. what we really need is wholesale mind cleansing of offending parties. these "baits" and "bantz", as well as the frequently hackneyed and always lessgood exchanges they spawn, can be forever removed; then all can equally bask in the warm, immutable glow of vintage vidya.

we can also install a selective memory reset function so all games and discussions remain as fresh as the first time.

Oversimplifications of things I've seen, but lets be very real here, the point of Silent Hill was very different from Resident Evil. Resident Evil sucks, honestly. The first 2 games were pretty good, but everything since has been worse than cheesy zombie films, but then again, that is Capcom.
Sometimes, instead of going "Man, this game sucks because it doesn't let me do what I want" you need to understand that certain games demanded you play a different way.

Gee wiz, who knew 14yo people who play video games are more easily entertained and immersed than late 20-somethings or worse.

Doesn't mean it's wrong to state those fucking flaws today in year 2017 if they are objectively exactly that - flaws. Which lack of customization surely isn't.

No shit, that's exactly what it means. Old legacy control shooters are aged because their control schemes are far removed from what the current norm is, for instance. Typing into a text prompt to do actions in adventure games is not as intuitive as clicking on the screen, etc. Aspects of games are replaced by "better" ones and these elements cause things to feel old and outdated.
