I would like separate lists for both the Hu-card/Turbo Chip and CD formats.

I would like to explore more of this console's library.

>> No.4391314

>>4391145

HU-Cards only:

Shmups:

Blazing Lazers
Soldier Blade
Super Star Soldier

Platformer:

Legendary Axe
Legendary Axe 2

Pinball:

Alien Crush
Devil Crush

Other:
Bobmerman 93/94
Parasol Stars

>> No.4391369

Curious about these games:
Galaga 90
Military Madness
Final Soldier
The Dynastic Hero
Neutopia II
Chew Man Fu

How are they?

>> No.4391375

>>4391369

Final soldier is inferior to the top 3 shmups in the above list.

Galaga 90 is good if you like Galaga

Haven't played the others.

not gonna lie, this is like the 3rd time you've asked this question

Galaga 90 is probably the best game on your list

Military Madness is solid but gets really hard. It doesn't have "enemy turn skip" or "fast forward" options either

Final Soldier is good fun. The weapon edit mode is not a game-changer like in Gradius 3

Dynastic Hero is a waste of money, an inferior port in both graphics and sound. Buy Monster World instead.

Neutopia 2 is kinda generic, and the hit detection is ass. But you can have some fun with it. Buy Ys IV instead

I don't know much about Chew Man Fu. It has 1000 levels I think, so you won't finish it anytime soon.

The reason I asked so many times is I never got an answer.

most of Hudson's games were exclusive (1st party)

Some notable third party exclusives that weren't arcade ports (though many ports were exclusive)
>Legend of Xanadu I and II
>Rondo of Blood
>SonSon II
>Image Fight II
>Gekisha Boy
>Blood Gear

Some notable exclusives that got ported were
>Tokimeki Memorial
>Gulliver Boy
>Anearth Fantasy Stories
>Legendary Axe 1 and 2

Red Entertainment was the "Treasure" or Rareware of the PC Engine. they were responsible for several critical 2nd party games

>Bonk series
>Tengai Makyou series
>Kabuki fighter
>Air Zonk
>Galaxy Fraulein Yuna series
>Gate/Lords of Thunder

and a couple third party gems like Kid Dracula and work on Legendary Axe 2

Why is the weapon edit mode in Final Soldier inferior to the one in Gradius III?

>> No.4394096

I went through the /v/ recommended game list to put on my Turbo Everdrive and it seems like half the games recommended are shmups and like a quarter are platformers. I knew what I was getting into when I got my PCE, but what are some good games from other genres? Preferably HuCard games since I already have the full library downloaded.

Anyways, at the moment I'm playing Ys Book 1 & 2 and Super Dodge Ball. Hella fun

lots of good RPGs, but a significant portion are not translated

beatemups are lacking, but there is a nice remake of River City Ransom

RPGs on HuCard?

Cannot think of anything on the Hu-card aside from Dungeon Explorers and the two Neutopia games.

not a lot. The Momotaro Densetsu games were popular though

The original version of Cyber Knight was on Hucard, as well as a stripped down remake of War of the Dead

I mean, I'm hardly at a loss for RPGs since I haven't even started looking at the PSX library. I'm more looking for good arcade games. I know there's some Sega ports on the PCE but there's better ones on their later consoles anyways so whatever. Right now I'm just looking at the library and picking out games from developers I like; I'll report back if I find anything special.

I played all three versions and they all seem terrible.

yeah, but if you are going to play a terrible early PC game, you might as well play the one with the most features! It's Valis 2 all over again: why play the painfully dull PCE-CD port of Valis 2, with its bosses boasting 2 - yes, count 'em! - frames of animation, when you can struggle with the bizarre controls, bad jumping physics, asinine hit detection of the X68000 port/remake, complete with extra levels, weapons, bosses, and armor sets? You'd have to be mad!!!!

What is there about Final Soldier's design that makes you think that?

>> No.4400315

Was there something about the hardware that made the console good for shooters? There sure are a lot of them.

While it had higher specs than the NES (and IIRC a faster processor than the SNES, but don't quote me on that!), I don't think there was anything about it that made it "the shooter system." I think it just came out at the time when shooters were at the height of their popularity, so it received a lot of those (and comparatively less platformers or action games, it sometimes seems like). So it's like a time capsule of what was popular then; by the time the SNES and Genesis were getting into swing, tastes and profits had shifted towards other genres (not totally tho: Gradius III an SNES launch title! crazy to think).

That being said, the console's color and ram expansions made it truly a dumping ground of visual novels, digital comics, and sim games, far outpacing the NES, SNES, or Genesis in those categories.

>>4400315
Not particularly, it’s essentially a 16-bit nes. It’s reflected in the small rom size hucards and lack of hardware layers as well

Both Hudson and nec, the two 1st parties, were critical for establishing the system’s reputation for shooters and arcade ports. Hudson programmed the famous r-type port, Raiden port, and also created the star soldier series. NEC was responsible for the majority of Sega and Capcom games on the pc engine, as well as an incredible Darius port.

It came out during the height of the genre's popularity. There are a ton of them on the Genesis, too.

The best selling early releases were all shooters. Detana Twinbee (in Japan) and Blazing Lazers (in America) were especially popular. So devs just all went "TURBO OWNERS LIKE SHOOTERS! LET'S MAKE SHOOTERS FOR IT!"
