This is purely fan conjecture but apparently they fucked up the slowdown code and the game drops twice as many frames as it should when there's too much shit on screen.
Also they removed the cube level and redesigned the game to be more "casual", not that this necessarily a bad thing since the original was way too hard.

There's nothing wrong with making Gradius III easier, but the PS2/PSP version does a much better job of doing it. The SNES version just removes a bunch of stuff and replaces it with content from Gradius II.

I put options earliest on the bar and then max ripples right after and probably a shield/field. As far as I know no other game lets you customize the order which is a real shame. When I unlocked edit in Gradius V I fucked around with the flamethrower thing and it's surprisingly really good. I always use freeze because it's basically just like spacing except it's quicker and more freedom.
