As someone born in 1998 and who is new to this board, what are some essential old games you recommend I look into

>> No.4394995

Doom

>> No.4394997

>>4394995
I already played that. It was pretty good. I also played doom 2

>> No.4395003

Super Mario is p. good

>> No.4395006

>>4395003
Alright. I'll go check it out

>> No.4395012

What games do you like? If you liked doom you would probably like other classic shooters. I recommend half life

>> No.4395015

SotN

>> No.4395018

>>4395012
Well other than FPS's, I also really like strategy games and RPGs. I was thinking something like XCOM or Planescape torment, as those are like the only games pre 2004 I've played. I've also never played an old jrpg so any recommendations for getting into those would be appreciated

>> No.4395047

>>4395018
Chrono Trigger is an excellent choice for a highly accessible JRPG.

>> No.4395052

HoMM3
Jagged Alliance 2
Fallout 1 and 2
Quake 1-3 (including online)
Duke Nukem 3D
Might and Magic 3-8 (3-5 are a good bridge to JRPGs)

>> No.4395064

Chrono Trigger, if you have a DS with an R4 card you can get it for free and play on handheld. It's also on the SNES mini. For a more weird rpg I suggest EVO search for Eden. It's a personal favorite. Super Mario RPG I liked as well as Paper Mario when it comes to the first two titles. If you like those and want to go in-depth into JRPGs I believe the original dragon quest games have been translated, either officially or fan translated.

>> No.4395067

>>4395018
You should play Final Fantasy Tactics

>> No.4395074

4395074

>>4395018

Homeworld is the best single player RTS game ever made. The game is mostly built for single player, it's got lots of features like a persistent fleet and dynamically changing difficulty to match your performance. The plot and presentation of the game are also really good.

>> No.4395079

figure out what systems you like and go from there

also try and think of things you played when you were younger but never owned or got to finish

>> No.4395080

>>4394993
Final fantasy VI

>> No.4395104

>>4394993
I don't know, what genres are you looking into?
Sonic 1-3&K are great games. I also personally enjoy Crash 1 and 2, System Shock 1 and 2. Super Metroid is also great.

>> No.4395128

>>4394993

>1998

>Obligatory combination post of realizing you're not an underage shit, and then wondering what the fuck I've been doing with my life.

Seriosuly. I'm old enough to be your father.

Your fucking FATHER.

FUCK.

>> No.4395131

>>4395128

It's not like you had the opportunity. Economic and sociological data makes it painfully obvious why the generations are getting shittier as they get younger.

My recommendation is Terra Nova: Strikeforce Centauri. It's not an FPS, but a power armor sim, and I think it's wonderful. If you can overcome the somewhat clunky control scheme, and if you're not put off by the cheesy acting in the FMVs, then you're in for a good time.

Alright, you got through Doom so that's out of the way...well, unless you want to tackle mods and maps, which is a whole other beast entirely.

Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest 3 and Seiken Densetsu 3 will give you a good bit of JRPG's to play.

Silent Hill, Parasite Eve, Resident Evil 2 for some horror (though PE also counts as JRPG).

Perfect Dark you can get on 360 or Xbone for the best version of that, also Quake 1-3, Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, Half-Life, Alien Resurrection and Medal of Honor for shooters.

Starcraft, Diablo 1 and 2 for your essential Blizzard games.

Mechwarrior 2 and it's expansions, all the Armored Core games on PSX and Front Mission 1 and 3 for you mech games.

Ace Combat 2 and 3, all the X-Wing and Tie fighter games, all the Wing Commander games and Rogue Squadron for you flight games.

Command and Conquer series, Homeworld, Warcraft 3 for RTS.

Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper, KOF98, Tekken 3 for fighting games.

Fallout 1-2, Elder Scrolls, Dinine Divinity, Baldur's Gate for WRPG's.

Test Drive 6 for a good racing game, it's not my genre of expertise so ask someone else for more games.

Then for a grab bag, Castlevania SOTN, Star Wars SNES games, AVP arcade, D&D arcade, Bare Knuckle, Final Fight, Blaster Master, Puyo Pop, Panel de Pon, Sailor Moon, DBZ and Gundam games, Brandish 3.

Actually there was never a time nerds were sexier than the mid to late 90s there were even nerd groupies believe it or not. The whole fake nerd aesthetic floating around ever since is a direct result of the era when OP was conceived. It's very likely many ~20 year olds are legitimate second generation nerds although if they are it's also pretty likely they were raised by their slutty single moms once being the local champion at Magic: The Gathering stopped seeming so Alpha to her.

liking videogames for their story is silly, but homeworld 1 has a concise and unpretentious simple storyline that really adds to the whole experience.

in singleplayer:
>homeworld 1 (old version, NOT the remastered, dont ignore this advice)
>homeworld cataclysm singleplayer
>homeworld 2 (in here you can play the remaster version, but its not much different)
and for multiplayer check homeworld 2 complex mod. but hw1 hwc hw2 matches are good too.

OP, I was born in 97. Got into retro vidya through older bro and his collection, and early Youtube. I'd say, simply, start with essentials. It's pretty easy to do that. Things like Mario, Zelda, etc. Things that appear on top lists for old consoles and etc, or for easy mode, Nintendo's recent throwback consoles are a time capsule of the big games of the time, generally. After that, then branch out. I got into the culture side of things, again, with Youtube. But /vr/, YT, certain Twitch streamers like Vinesauce, nostalgia culture, etc make it really easy these days to understand retro gaming. And ofc the anons itt are giving great recommendations, as you'd expect. I find that I like retro vidya alongside new vidya, I'm always finding good old games.

The idea that you can't enjoy things that weren't released when you were a kid is so bizarre I can only imagine it is caused by the trauma of being a consumer with no actual sense of self.

I grew up watching movies that were older than I was because that's what my parents put on the TV. I certainly enjoyed them legitimately. Video games are no different. Especially since video games had such a burst of creativity and innovation in the 90s.

the photo shows no distortion from refraction of whats visible behind the lens.. so its not hyper nor myo.

and for presbyopia (also refraction lens) its sometimes only refractory on the lower center region of the lens, so in this pic (with glasses slid a lil down) only the skin below the eye pockets would be distorted and therefore not really detectable in such a low-res pic.
but its very unlikely for a man under 40 to have presbyopia.

so only astigmatism remains as a marginal chance (keratoconis too rare even in adolescence and by late adulthood it stabilizes), and people who have only astigmatism, have it to less than ppl with myo or hyper in association.

and a low degree of astigmatism (actually even high like mine) doesnt interfere with reading signs on the wall or reading a book, or social interactions via exchange of microexpressions (far or upclose), some ppl with astigmatism can even pass as 20/20.

theres no reason someone with low degree fo astigmatism would want to wear glasses 24/7 in all situations like ppl with myopia do.
so that guy is just using it to pass as nerd.

I have a mild astigmatism and I can't legally drive without my glasses. When I got my glasses I didn't need to wear them all the time, but now I can't function without them. While you clearly know your shit about eyes, I think you're making some pretty big stretches in this case. James has been wearing those glasses (in the public eye) for like, a decade now; and even wears them outside of the AVGN character. Having to wear glasses absolutely sucks, I don't think anyone would put them on as a shtick for that long.

I was born in '88, but my first console was my older brother's 4-switch 2600. Centipede was my first game and I still love playing Atari. As you said, the 2600 was on store shelves until 1992; there's 15 years of machines floating around the US, not to mention the billions of carts. I'm sure tons of kids had one in their house growing up long after its demise. The things hardly ever break either, which helps.

>no mention of Monkey Island or Rockman DASH

OP, I want you to check these two adventure games out:

1) Escape from Monkey Island
2) Megaman Legends

They are both in the highest echelon of high-quality adventure games and pretty much two of the most charming games ever conceived. Their art style, their music, their characters, their voice acting, their gameplay; these games are the most perfect culmination of all these things put together. They are, without a doubt, some of the few masterpieces of the videogame medium.

Lots of oldfags will try to tell you that Escape from Monkey Island is the worst one in the series and they are completely full of shit.

Oh yes, anon, I'm so certain you have amazing taste in games. It's not like everyone else, who came in and posted out lists of games. (many of which had overlapping titles in the vein of what OP was looking for)
No, you come in and post only 2 games, one good one and one that was awful for the series it's set in, then say that people who were there for the release, who would have been current fans of the series, knew the ins and outs of the genre, etc, have bad taste and you, who aren't an oldfag, evidently have better taste when you weren't there to enjoy the series.
One person against many of them.

I respect your opinion, anon, and I'm glad you had the balls to stand out, but Jesus Christ, Anon, Escape is a shit game comparatively and was only meant to be extra money from an already successful franchise.
"Oh yes, now we'll deal with Threepwood's domestic issues, now that he's settled down."
Absolute trash, just like every other franchise that has completed the main story and just wants a new cash grab. There's no point in bringing back Threepwood's shit, make a new series, make a new game, make new characters, stop banking on the popularity of old ones.
The game itself isn't bad. it works well, but it's in that lame stage of "Here's a popular name, he's already finished his important story arc, but we can probably squeeze a little more blood from this stone" from the marketers of the big companies.

Homeworld remaster is in fact:
homeworld 2 engine with remastered textures and whatnot
And then they remade hw1 into hw2 engime BUT some key features of hw1 are lacking, o forget all but its :
-small ship refueling
-drone frigate mechanics
-tactical posture (aggressive, neutral, evasive )
These and more are essential to the gameplay of hw1, witgout them ure just playing hw1 in hw2 engine for the "story "

And since the remaster is just some silly things, theres no point hw1 in remaster.
the units in hw are edgy ships, so polycount doesnt even matter.
the old game runs fine in windows 7, its from 1999

Super Metroid is a must.
LTTP is a must.

Quake 1-3 are good, but you'll likely never get good at them without a community to play against - 3 will end up losing a lot to being multiplayer only with limited modes. 1 is really the big one of the three though.

Duke3D. For more FPS not required but worth (other Build engine games, Wolf3D if only to get a taste of the grandaddy, Rise of the Triad, Blakestone, Heretic and Hexen)

Descent.

Some worthwhile DOS titles to attempt - Syndicate/Wars, Commander Keen series, Darklands, Crusader No Remorse, Dungeon Hack, Daggerfall, Dream Web, Dune2000, C&C series sequentially, Warcraft 1/2, God of Thunder, Jill of The Jungle, Loderunner (actually Lode Runner Online for windows 3.1 is best), Magic Carpet, Monkey Island series, Day of The Tentacle (and maybe it's predecessor Maniac Mansion), Zone 66, Sim City / 2000, Terminal Velocity, ZZT,

NES games - Zelda 1/2, Metroid, Castlevanias, Kung Fu, Gargoyle's Quest, Punch out, Ninja Gaiden, TMNT (not good but you'll understand our hate), Little Samson, Fire n Ice, Dfeender, Contra, Clash at Demonhead, Bubble Bobble.

I'll post some more later my hands are killing me for now.
