Posted this before, posting it again.

It's picture of my little brother, me, and my dad in his home office. Brother is playing GTA 1 on dad's computer. We played GTA a lot, almost every day. Some of the other games we played were Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Half-Life, and Tomb Raider.

Dad didn't care that much about computer games, but he was always happy to help us install and play them. Dad died last summer. He was rushed to hospital for stomach problems, stayed there for about week, and then passed away. He left so quickly and unexpectedly that all of his stuff was left laying around exactly as he had left them. Almost as if he had just went to the store and will be back any minute now, but he will never come back.

Sorry I had to ruin the picture with censors, I just don't think it would be appropriate to post recognizable photos of my family on 4chan.

Don't know, but that 31" TV in today's dollars is slightly over $4,000.

Here's the inflation adjustment calculator if you want to try to figure it out, or go through old gaming ads and see what all that shit costs in today's money:

Nothing to worry about.

Before 1989, you had the cold war turning hot to worry about, but that ended by 1989 and even then you could say it wasn't even a threat by the early 80's
1990's were pretty perfect if you were american/european (although 50hz gaming was trash)
then 9/11 came in 2001 and slapped us back to reality
then by the time things were shaping up in the mid 00's, we had the recession, and here we are today in 2017 no better

Were you kids actually old enough to remember it? Everyone acts like it was some crazy turning point, a "through-the-looking-glass" moment. I agree it had an impact on society in general, but I was 14 at the time, and it didn't really affect most kids very much. Children were always aware of bad shit going down on the news, and they tend to just brush it off unless it affects them directly. Unless a kid had a friend or family member that died in the tragedy, they're going to forget about it the second their favorite cartoon comes on.

>Maybe because I was some sort of nerd, but it was a total shock.
Maybe. I lived less than an hour from Boston, the airport where the planes were hijacked from, and I had been to the top of the twin towers on vacation just over a year earlier, and I remember barely batting an eyelash over the whole thing. As a kid, I never saw a reason to get upset over things that didn't affect me or that I was powerless to change. I was aware the world was a shithole full of bad people, but I was barely a teenager and had homework and chores to do so whatever. I think I maybe spent a little while thinking about how shitty it would have been to be on the top floor of the tower when the planes hit, but then I moved on.

It may have been how I found out about it, though. I was in school and the word was spreading it was on the news. My teacher flicked it on the TV for about 3 minutes, then shut it off, assuming it was just an accident and that it was a distraction from our work, so I spent the whole rest of the day not really knowing or caring. Wasn't until later that night I finally heard a report that it was a terrorist attack, and by that time the impact had been lost.

Also, I'm not sure how it is in Europe, but in America I feel like there was a major bombing/shooting/tragedy at least twice a year. Kids get desensitized that that pretty quickly. At least, I did. It was hard to stress the importance of it being the first major terrorist attack of its kind on US soil, because kids listen to the news and hear about people killing people every day in the US. The politics behind it don't make much of a difference for many of us.

>Here it was really big, I remember talking about it in class, doing some reports and seeing everyone really affected.
That's not to say that didn't happen here. We certainly talked about it after the fact, and maybe I wrote a paper or two, but given that the day of, literally all of my teachers just considered it a distraction and wouldn't let us watch it in school, it kind of set the tone. Then the news media machine quickly made the attacks all about the politics and pushing for war, and then the criticism started to roll out, and living in a blue state I was in the thick of it, it basically just made me shut it all out. I knew a few kids who seemed bothered by it, but honestly they were doing it to win "grown up points", or because they were in a journalism class. The rest of my friends and I were to busy playing on our shiny new Gamecubes and PS2s or whatever.

Just to make this about video games, I was honestly more distraught that when I had been in New York a year earlier, some fucker broke into our car and stole my Game Boy and Pokemon Blue, on which I had recently completed the Pokedex. I did get a new GBC to replace it, so there's that, I guess.

I dunno man. Like I said, I lived in Massachusetts, less than an hour away from the airport where the planes were hijacked. People cared, but it didn't take over our lives or suddenly "open our eyes" to the hatred of the world or whatever. It was news, it happened, and then our lives moved on. It didn't completely change our world or take away our childhood innocence like people want to claim.

Probably because, like I said, it wasn't long after the attack that the media angle completely shifted. It was more about the politics and gearing up for war than it was about the actual tragedy.

I remember it vaguely. I had no fucking clue what was going on and was mad that parents wouldn't put it back on Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon or whatever I was watching then. All I saw were the towers collapsing.

I was 14 in 2001, dude. Nothing changed for me. At all. There was some slight paranoia, and airport lines got ridiculous. Maybe I was just old enough to not be scared by it or realize that it wasn't going to change anything.

I don't have any pictures myself as my parents indulged our video gaming as much as it shut us up but they had no interest in the games themselves. My dad eventually began to hate technology in general and is tough to get along with these days, even though he got us started with it.

But I did see this video today and it helped remind me of the past in general, even if my past was never cool enough to meet this standard. Must have been nice with parents legitimately interested in the technology and getting in on the game playing/collecting themselves.

I think it's the lack of kinship in today's society. In the past few decades especially, families have been breaking up and more people live without than ever. People don't value each other anymore and there's little love to be found in the world.

You need little more proof than how games have evolved. People used to sit beside friends and family for multiplayer. Now people mostly seem to play online with strangers who sort of become friends but once y'all log off...

hi, 80s dude here. computing then was fantastic. we still had the world at our fingertips by connecting up a very slow modem but we could still have a marvellous time collecting software, meeting people and causing trouble. if anything, computing became incredibly cancerous from 2000 onwards.

>if you were american/european (although 50hz gaming was trash)
not really. only the poorly programmed games were trash. most shit from nintendo and sega of japan wasn't even fixed properly to run on 50hz systems. they just released 60hz to PAL regions and did nothing to fix them. so we in PAL land got a few frames per second less. for home computers it was the other way around. PAL got all the great titles and NTSC got the fixed versions.
