What are some shorter retro JRPGs I should play? I just finished YS on the Master System (I know it's not the best port of the game, but it was easily accessible to me), and I really liked it. I think I put maybe 12 hours into it total, and it was my first playthrough.

It's nice to be able to spend a few hours a night on a game and finish it within a week, sometimes. Some longer RPGs can be a test of patience when you're an old fart who has responsibilities and things.

Ys 1 isn't really a JRPG by the technical term, which involve turn based combat and such. If you're looking for more stuff like it this is pretty much everything in the 8-bit sector, most of it is relatively short. Sword Master is good and quick ignoring it's ballgrabbing difficulty but it has the least RPG elements of any of these games. Maybe try Crystalis.

As for the J/traditional RPGs Swords & Serpents as well as Tombs & Treasure are relatively quick and are pretty fun. Pool of Radiance and Dragon Warrior IV are amazing if you feel like sinking in some extra time. Honestly with the JRPGs you might want to consider an emulator with 2/3x speed, since it's turn based anyway, unless that kind of thing triggers you. The maze crawlers don't have as much of a molasses pace usually as far as walking around/encounters/battles go.

For only 12 hours your only options are really nes jrpgs, typically even most snes/genesis jrpgs go for around 20-30 hours.

Honestly I think it's good to just take them slow. Sometimes I might take a month or two to complete a 40-70 hour jrpg. Though I myself am extremely picky about my jrpgs so typically I go into the games knowing they are something I actually want to invest my times into it.

For turn based maybe look into either Chrono Trigger or Dragon Quest III (snes remake is the best version) as both of those are about maybe 20 hours, more or less. For action rpgs these typically seem to be shorter, at least to me. I really enjoy the Quintet trilogy on the snes (Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma), I believe all of them are about 15-20 hours each if I remember correctly.

Hope this helps.

Pool of radiance isn't a jrpg

>> No.4384082

Also consider Times of Lore, Legacy of the Wizard, or Pirates! which are all also relatively quick and share many elements with RPGs though they technically aren't.

I didn't say it was.

I mean, the technical term is just "Japanese Role-Playing Game". I think that art style and story are more defining characteristics of JRPGs, honestly. I enjoy both turn-based and action RPG games.

I'll definitely check some of these out, though. Thanks.

I do prefer to play on original hardware in most cases. But these are great infographics I will be saving for future reference. Much appreciated.

Don't get me wrong, I love some longer RPG games (currently playing through PSIV and it's taking me forever), but sometimes it's nice to find a shorter game you can knock out in a solid weekend of playing, or just to have something fresh to play when you need a break.

Yeah if it's the Japanese aesthetic you're looking for specifically the Dragon Warrior series, Crystalis, Radia Senki, and nearly all unofficially translated RPGs on that chart are full of that.

It's a shame what they did with Little Ninja Brothers. Basically 4kids'd it. Changed all of the onigiri shops to mcdonald's and it's covered in dumb jokes and things of the like.

Huh, you know for a licensed movie game, it actually doesn't look too bad. It doesn't hurt that it's a movie that's actually really good.

Would Moon Crystal count? I read it has one of the most advanced Famicom OSTs, iirc: http://www.romhacking.net/translations/189/

Shin Megami Tensei I and II have fan translations courtesy of Aeon Genesis, and so do the first two Megami Tensei titles from the NES as one for the updated compilation port of both to the SNES.

The Dark Spire was my jam as a kid. Gorgeous art style and fucking amazing soundtrack. It definitely helped that I found a full walkthrough because goddamn the puzzles are obtuse and it was still a fun 40 hour run, but I've been wishing lately that I could replay it blind. It's got a great dry sense of humor, as you'll see in the opening cutscene and tutorial. Where else would you find a statue of Hello Kitty deep in dragon territory, or a locked door whose passcode is an old CPU model number? Hell, the whole tower, the titular Dark Spire, is one big reference to something very important to the game in real life. I'm being purposefully vague because it's the literal final ending spoiler and it's hilarious.

If you notice some Latin in the last track that's because portions of the twelfth stanza of Dies Irae are spread throughout much of the soundtrack as lyrics. The last one I linked to sounds trippy and uncharacteristic of the rest of the game because it goes along with the trippiest area of the game. I found this wiki with filled out maps and stats for every enemy and piece of equipment for it years ago somehow and since I can't remember how it can't have been easy: http://thedarkspire.wikidot.com/

Looks like I ended up shilling the game, so please try it if it seems neat. And look out for the crocus.

There is error in this picture. Shin Megami Tensei are Super Famicom games and are translated.
Megami Tensei are Famicom games. And while I’m not sure about translation status of of original MT games, remake of both Megami Tensei games for Sufami called Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei is translated.

I just looked it up, looks like at least one of the NES games got translated in 2014. I made the folders around 2004 so it's not surprising some of those games got translated, should probably look up the rest too but I'm lay z.

I need to fix the charts anyway though because for some reason Ys III got into the traditional RPG chart instead of the action chart. Fuck it I'll do it right now.

How in the world is it taking you forever? Its a really linear game and if it takes you over even 8 hours to beat it, you're doing something horribly wrong.
