the irony here is that the answer is galaxy, which doesn't conform to board rules as being retro, and which is also never discussed by modern circles because it's considered "too old to be relevant / too new to warrant any proper analytical retrospect."

a couple console generations in the future, galaxy will be widely acknowledged as the best in the series; but only after retro-fetishism falls out of vogue and / or "retro" is redefined more broadly.

this is not so much a problem with the board as it is the industry itself.

IMHO, SMW and sm64 won't be topped.
Super, SMB3, galaxy, odyssey and 3Dworld to some extent are good games, but you know the crazy community that talks about parallel dimensions will stick to 64. Same as you know crazy japos making hardstyle kaizo levels that hit millions of views on niconico will stick to SMW.
Same parallel with Melee.
There will be people playing the other games, they're good, but the peak of Mario will always be SMW and 64. I think it'll be hard to top these 2, only possible thing that could top them or at leas be on the same level is if we find a way to play in 4D.

Visuals look like shit though. Both Super Mario World and Sunshine have a much more pleasing aesthetic than this.

Hell, several games that came out the very same year, like Crash Bandicoot, Parappa the Rapper and Nights into Dreams have better looking graphics, so it's not even a technical problem, art direction is just crap.

I personally associate Mario with cutting-edge graphics in service of making the game look like a cartoon come to life - and every main Mario game before and after fulfilled it to the degree it was possible at the time - with sole exception of SM64.

DS remake fixes a lot of the aesthetic problems though, with improved models and better colored textures, tho.

Have you tried any romhacks? Granted, very few of them come close to capturing the quality of the original game, but at the very least it's new challenges to overcome with the movement of mario 64, which is nice. I recommend Star Road, Green Stars, and arguably Last Impact if you're interested.

Man it's so odd seeing Galaxy get all this love all of a sudden - truly in a degree which I have never seen since the game's release. I think what's happening is the exact same thing that happens to Zelda, where contrarians shit on the new installment and have a lovefest over the previous one(s). Mark my words: Once a new Mario comes out, Odyssey is going to be the internet's most beloved Mario game in history.
