You know what's very mind numbing? Making video games when you're the only person on the team and you contract everything else out. Currently making a small rpg, and it's a mindless work being locked in a room at my computer. How did old developers do it, considering a lot of them had small teams too?

>> No.4382951

For one, it's not a secret that japanese are very devoted to their job and don't mind sleeping at the office and going home maybe a few times a month only to bath and change clothes.
Like, I bet not all of them were like that but yeah they had really long work schedules, probably worked all 7 days of the week too.
As for developers that worked alone, many of them were literal kids who were still at school, so they had all the free time in the world. This was common in the computer scene.

I had tons of time like that when I was young, too. I've been trying to recapture that thrill and sense of time I use to have. Since I do this full time, I have all the time, too, but I suppose having previously worked for others, I often feel like I'm not using my time properly, which Im trying to engineer out of my mental state.

Lol I don't have time to make a commercial game, I'm still a student and will be getting another job soon too. The retro games will still be good additions to my portfolio if I finish them, plus I met a publisher who's interested in maybe putting some of my stuff on carts. DESU retro game dev is the easiest option for me since I don't have a reliable artist. Making graphics for the 320x224 Genesis display is way easier than even 720p HD graphics, and RPG Tsukūru 2 already comes with built-in assets like most RPG Maker releases.

The intro text befpre the first boss battle. RPG Tsukūru 2 is pretty limited, so all the bosses are represented in the overworld by flames. The actual battles take place in a first person perspective a la Dragon Warrior, but I haven't gotten to actually selecting the enemies for each battle yet so there's no point in showing a battle screen against a level one slime. And yes, my game is edgy and uses swears.

>>4383628
I'm not really trying to use "low end" graphics; sure the resolution is shit but good art is good art regardless of its limitations. IMO the sprite art in RPG Tsukūru 2 is pretty good (I could always hack in new sprites and tiles later too), and if Gunstar Heroes is indicative of what the Genesis can do, then I can squeeze some pretty great art out of my other game too. I'm currently looking for artists for my Genesis game, so hopefully I can find someone that's good at sprite art.

Then again, I'm pretty disconnected from the modern gaming scene so I don't know what people are looking for. I'm making this game for myself and other retro nerds first and foremost.

The end of the first dungeon. RPG Tsukūru 2 is very limited in regards to designing levels. It basically works on a tile selection screen similar to modern RPG Maker engines, but with bigger 4x4 square tiles. As such, a lot of the game looks similar and some parts are oddly designed (4x4 tiles means things will often not be properly centered). It's a sacrifice, but nowhere near as frustrating as the limits placed on the technical side of the engine. The entire game is pretty much coded through switches which means any break from linearity requires exponentially more switches, which in turn eats up exponentially more ROM space and skillful planning to get everything running smooth. I'm definitely going to work more in the hex editor now that I have a better knowledge of 65816 and see if I can bump up the ROM size at all. Right now, the text, maps, events, etc. need to be squeezed into 64kb of space, and I'm just about running out.

Otherwise you'd churn out a basic small RPG engine in a week and then spend your time coming up with new features to add and be mentally stimulated implementing them. You have to understand literally everything about the hardware you're working on.

https://pastebin.com/kJC99PA7 (I didn't make this, some guy on a Genesis hacking forum did)

This is an example of just how to print a simple string onscreen in m68k assembly language - and the Genesis is considered to be easier to program for compared to the SNES.

The thing with asm though, if you do it right its faster than using C. The SNES doesn't have a lot of cycles to just throw away - so if you stick to C you're gonna end up with choppier performance compared to handwriting assembly language.

See I'm one of those programmers that understands things really well at a high level but is shit at low level programming.

I'd be like "how do I draw a hitbox????" and fumble around like an idiot forever.

Of course I do. Any sufficiently advanced experience is indistinguishable from smugness.

6502 is probably the easiest assembly to learn. Plenty of people, including myself, have written full games in it.
>100 lines of asm
lol. Not even close and no chance I would ever do it exactly the way SGDK does.

The 2600 was the ultimate spaghetti code console. If you could fit everything into 4k by jumping around and reusing code in ways that would have a modern programmer quivering in the corner of the ball pit in the rec room you saved a shitload on production.

>have fun writing 100 lines of asm for the exact same vdp initialization as 1 line of c

So a programming language with a chief design goal of being as close as it possibly could to a portable mapping of machine language requires 100 lines of assembly to equivocate?

God forbid people want to have a life outside the office. Let alone have a healthy sleep schedule and basic hygiene.
