Which one was better?

>> No.4380068

Probably DQ seeing how 90% of its mechanics aren't broken.

Dragon Quest, because it generally has better porn.

They were both good and there's no reason anyone should have to arbitrarily place one above the other except to create pointless drama.

DQ is my personal preference. They all feel more "solid" and "complete" than FF games feel to me, if that makes any sense. FF always seems dead set on reinventing the wheel while DQ formed a rock solid foundation for gameplay.

FFI > DQI
FFII = DQII both are shit
FFIII <<< DQIII
FFIV < DQIV
FFV > DQV
FFVI >>> DQVI
FFVII = DQVII
Then FF started shitting out games too often for the comparisons to make sense but:
FFVIII <<< DQVIII
FFIX > DQIX

Do you guys compare the game number, or the general time frame the game came out? DQ3 came out like, 2 months after FF1.

>> No.4380591

>>4380576
Honestly it feels natural to compare the same number since they have often similiarities.
Like both III having a focus on job system or both IV having parties that change a lot during the game.

I don't know why but Dragon Quest has a nostalgic for me feeling that Final Fantasy lacks. I enjoy playing the older games and get nostalgic about them despite not having played them as a kid. With FF I'm just "Eh, why bother. Might as well play the remakes". Must have something to do with FF always trying to stay hip and cutting edge while DQ sticks to a archetypical fantasy tale easthetic.

>> No.4380849

>>4380783
DQ is much more true to the "swords and sorcery" aesthetic that gives the games an especially cozy feel. FF is aesthetically up its own ass with the mashing together of magic, tech, etc. The worlds are thematically incoherent.

>> No.4380853

>>4380849
That's true for 4 onward but FF1 and 3 have the swords and sorcery feel. Not coincidentally, they're the only FF games I like better than the DQ/DW games.

>> No.4380887

Even the first game already had sci fi elements like robots and shit.
Though it's funny that DQ always had robots enemy as well but their presence in a medieval world is never explained (except in VII).

>>4380871
>What was even the draw to FF3 though
Probably the best balance between expiration and structure in either series.

>>4380887
I find it funny that in the same breath you say FF1 is discounted as a medieval game because of robots but are okay with it in DQ. I love both, but you're being a fanboy.

because you actually give a shit about the main character, he's not the chosen one (which was a breath of fresh air), and its story was better.

>> No.4381551

>>4381448
He's A chosen one. His father was king and his mother was from an elected race that guards the gate to the underworld.
Yes his son is even more of a special snowflake since he's part Zenithian but in the end you don't even need to bring him along to the final battle so the chosen hero thing ends up being pointless.
But regardless of all that III and IV simply have better balance and gameplay, and are less railroaded.

>> No.4381594

>>4381551
but he's not THE hero. in the grand scheme of things, he's just a guy who marries the chosen one.

>> No.4381630

>>4381594
>THE chosen hero
>stays home to play with his sister and their oversized cat while his dad kills the demon lord
I mean they could have at least attempted to make the chosen hero thing matter by forcing you to use him against Nimzo. But in the end it was just a gimmick, the MC is the only one that matters.

This is a small place.

>> No.4382250

Classic vs. modern really. DQ is really traditional, just introducing a new mechanic or two each iteration, they are more gameplay focused and more strategical. FF is actively trying to change still to this day to the point someone would think they're going to ditch turn based combat in the future. They're more story focused and have more content related to minigames and such.

There seems to be a disconnect here. I'm talking about the narrative, friend. Yes I get your complaint but they did it so people would have some flexibility.

You can play ffx without using tidus or yuna (after a certain point) but that doesn't change the narrative. that's just battle mechanics

Anyone has download link or know where I can get for retro Dragon Quest artwork?
Or at least scans for the japanese game covers and manuals.
