Friendly PSA to get one of these things and back up your old Game Boy save files before the internal batteries run out.

Instead of getting one of those shitty things i'd rather get something to back them up on my PC.
Either get BennVenn's dumper or build your own with an arduino https://github.com/sanni/cartreader
If you hate batteries you could also install some FRAM

You can also use the Mega Memory Card with a GB Flashcart to copy save data between microsd cards and GB/C carts

>> No.4378106

>>4378054
I like that thing but it's kind of annoying that it simply doesn't work with some games, like Dragon Quest 3, Seiken Densetsu, and SaGa 1
(The Retrode 2 Gameboy adapter also couldn't read saves from those, and there's more games like that besides those three. Whatever the common way to access GB save data is, apparently some carts are exceptions.)

I like to backup the previous owners' saves for posterity when I get used games

>> No.4378134

Resellers price gouge on those things, and there's no computer connectivity. Once the internal Flash burns out, it's useless, and you lose all your saves in the process. It would make more sense to spend the same amount of cash on a GameShark that can upload saves to your PC.

I heard somewhere that unless the game uses the battery constantly (like the clock on PKMN GSC) the voltage needed to load/save is so inconsequential that a battery can last for decades, specially for games where you save sparingly.

It's handy to have if you want to erase records on those games with no "clear data" option like Survival Kids

I like that. Could you imagine being from an alien civilization far into the future, visiting and exploring the ruins of Earth and "human" civilization". Wouldn't finding the archived saves of some old Earth-childs game move you to tears?

>> No.4378509

That ship's long since sailed for me I'm afraid, ironically because of a faulty one of those. Tried backing up my Pokémon Yellow save only to find that the data got corrupted, so I didn't even try to back up Crystal. Was eventually able to back up the Pokémon, but now I'm looking at an entirely different problem. How do you correct a save file's file size?

PSA, while the Mega Memory Card is awesome and I'm glad I have one, don't use it on a Game Boy Pocket. The GBP doesn't have quite enough juice to power it, and the power fluctuation can nerf your actual save (on the cart) when backing up. Happened to me, major bummer.

Interesting. What chip do you purchase to replace the sram? Is it compatible with all games that save?

>> No.4380138

>>4380102
The correct drop-in-replacement chip you need is an FM18W08-SG
They've become a bit 'rare' and expensive but should work with anything that has a savefile below 256kbit.

And don't get a FM28V020-SG instead.
They're not rated for 5V operating voltage.

I used a Everdrive 64 with a transfer pak and Saturnu's dumping program. It only worked when the connection was slightly loose, but it did the job.

There is the Retrode but I don't know whether it ever supported the GB camera. Don't know about other methods.

BennVenn's dumper also has an extra function for the GB Camera for people who aren't smart enough to extract the pictures from the .sav file and it doesn't cost nearly as much.
You can also stream pictures from the GB Camera to your PC through it in real time. Pretty sure it was only at a low framerate but still pretty neat.

One of those "shitty" things and a flashcart can do that. I used to do that with the Game Boy Camera and at least once with my Pokemon games.

It doesn't work with the EverDrive though, since it stores saves on the SD card.

Really? I mean, the Everdrive does actually load the saves onto battery backed RAM, it's just that when you switch to another game it backs it up to the SD card.
