Can we get a thread on Game hoaxes?

Before the internet hoaxes were common. Magazines would print false cheats either as an april fools or to see who is ripping off their guides (No one else would have the same fake cheats). This a lot with wide spread playground rumours lead to some amazing hoaxes that just aren't possible with the mass communication today.

The most famous is probably the Nude Lara cheat in TR1. This was pre-easy access to porn (well you could buy it on news agents shelves) and no rule 34 shit yet so people were fascinated at the idea of a nude Lara. Several versions of the cheat popped up on different systems but the one that stuck is TR1 on the PSX.

There was always "that kid" who told the most baffling and fascinating little "facts" about vidya he had figured out for some reason. Sometimes he was bullshitting for the sake of bullshit, sometimes he was just telling misinformation by mistake.

I, personally, was somewhat "that kid". I used to play lots of shitty shareware games back in the days, none of those cool expensive full games like Quake and whatnot, so when talking about vidya in school I kinda juiced it up and told stories about things that happened in my games that didn't really happen ie.

>get demo of Deer Hunter 1 from some computer magazine freebie cd
>pretty neat, not exactly doom or duke, but you get to blast guns at things
>other kids are drawing amazing action packed pictures of their gaming experiences
>many of the drawings were definitely exaggerated, but at least they were based on action games so it's alright
>what the fuck am I going to draw about? trees and maybe bush? boooring
>decide to "juice it up" like I told earier, and come up with new plotline about the game being about soldier sent to island where he has to fight against mutants created by some mad scientist
>draw a picture of mad scientist throwing test tubes at the player, some mutant shit going on etc.
>someone asks hey anon what is that game
>"Deer Hunter", I reply
>woooooooaaaah I gotta try that, says the kid

By the way I'm not a native english speaker, so perhaps "Deer Hunter" sounds more fascinating to non-english speakers. It has the word "hunt" in it after all. I still have that drawing somewhere, I might dig it up if you guys want to see it. Nothing special, but it's pretty funny now that I think about it.

Just imagine some kid waiting anxiously to get his hands on Deer Hunter so that he can shoot some mutants when in reality it's a game about standing in a field.

When I was a kid I loved playing Sonic 3D Blast, but I could never beat the game. I remember one time after the console loaded the game it suddenly brought me to the level select, without me inputting any code, which really confused me. After that, I noticed other random times when the game would go to the level select screen seemingly on its own. Since I could never beat the game, and I had still not beaten the final boss through using the seemingly random level select cheat that kept happening, I have memories of resetting the game over and over again, hoping that it would come up but it never did. I never figured out what triggered the level select, even when I got older. Then I saw this video and my mind was fucking blown.

The reason for it was probably because Aeris's death scene was moved to the Forgotten City from Northern Crater. It was probably originally gonna happen around when the Black Materia is given to Sepiroth as there's also dummied out backgrounds from there too. It was probably moved because they wanted disc 1 to impact-fully end with her death but they couldn't fit it in so instead of removing stuff to make room they just moved her death forward a few places.

Also the ghost thing is ridiculous, why is this even a big deal? It's just a little reminder of her tending the flowers when you first get properly introduced to her. A little "tug at the heart strings" moment, that's it

It's only a big deal because of its glitchiness, it never worked right and built up this mythos over whether the whole thing was a programming glitch or intentional. In both variations of the ghost scene Aeris loads a few frames early in the wrong place, and even when she is 'supposed' to be there the animation of her tending the flowers looks unfinished.

It's pretty easy to see it was an intentional event (it's even listed in the debug room) but I figure they were either having second thoughts or didn't finish the rest of it, as what actually transpires is lacking the polish of the rest of the game and very easy to cancel through unrelated dialogue choices.

Wasn't there a way to glitch Leo in?

Just like I recall a friend who had Nintendo Power tell me of a glitch to get the other moogles.
Which, in recent years, I rediscovered as a part of the "airship glitch".
Which was where you'd save just outside Narshe, save, play through to the floating continent without saving. Die in the first fight ON the continent, then you respawn where you last saved WITH the airship.
Allowing you to break scripts and keep the sprite placeholders by not getting the characters they originally stand in for.

That's the whole point of my post.
As the moogles are player controlled, and are placeholders for other characters in the game's code.
Same goes for Leo.

I was That Kid too. I loved playing games but realized they weren't as interesting to others when I described them, so I usually added a lot of embellishments. I've been called out before and it doesn't feel good.

I think a lot of people do this, not just with games. Something incredible happens to you (like bumping into a famous actor), and you know its not that interesting of a story but you want others to be as amazed as you are.

I unlocked a 152 Pokemon. It's called MewThree.

My favorite was "If you beat it using Sonya with no blocks and only using punches, she takes her top off". Weird how that one seemed to be circulated so vastly.

I remenber a friend that told me about a new Pokemon version one of his cousins that live in Japan was playing with a new Alakazam evolution called Bakungfui or something like based on a Chinese sage, he wasn't as strong as Mewthree that was the final boss.

Also another friend that told me about a Pokemon 3D fighting game he played as a game tester because his uncle worked a Nintendo, he told me he beat the game and you could choose what trainers to fight supposedly he choose to fight female trainers only since they were stupier and weaker lol

Man, so much of this Pokegod shit was "in the Japanese version."
I was so disappointed when I got a GameShark and could fuck with the game more or less at will. There is no Secret Garden behind Bill's house. There is no Pokegod City beyond Indigo Plateau.
I still wonder about that truck, though. For what purpose do you put a unique object in a place most players will never see it? Was it somebody with some spare time goofing off? Was it left over from some unused quest or something?
