I'm an autistic faggot who owns a PVM and just added an N64 to my collection. I've ordered a high quality S-video cable that has a good reputation for super cheap.

It's one of the "NS2" models that requires a more expensive mod, which would cost about $40. I do have the tools and materials to install it already.

Is it worth the money and effort to install? Or would that money be better served on adding to my collection?

I can find plenty of comparisons to composite and RBG, or composite and s-video, but very little out there about the comparison between RGB and s-video on the n64 in particular.

no rgb mod is worth it. consoles that dont output rgb were intended to be played with composhit video. N64 was designed to be a blurry mess and there is no fixing it unless you use an emulator. Plenty of consoles natively output rgb but most games use dithering to fake color depth and transparency so composhit was what the developers intended.

The n64 outputs RGB though. It just wasn't wired to the port or amplified.

I mostly prefer to play N64 and PS1 games on my PVM because both my LCD TV's handle 240p scaling terribly, not because of scanlines, and I really don't want to spend the money on a good external scaler since I already own the PVM.

hijacking the thread.

What about the UltraHDMI mod? Is it worth it to finally see what n64 games look like without vaseline smeared all over them? I think it would be like playing the system for the first time.

There's a person on craigslist who is selling hdmi modded n64s. How do I know that it won't stop working a year or so down the line?

You don't buy off craigslist.

I'm most interested in RGB for increasing the color quality, not the sharpness of the image necessarily. S-video already looks way sharper than comoshit video does, but the colors leave a little to be desired. It seems a bit washed out or over-saturated. Not sure if an RGB mod would fix that or not.

>>4365783
I appreciate the input. It's a relatively inexpensive mod, so I think I might just pull the trigger. $40 isn't too much to lose if I don't like the results.

some games actually look worse like dk 64 due to the jaggies.

Just get a gameshark, preferably ver 3.3

is from my capture card yet on the crt the right image without the filter has lots of jaggies which inst bad but I also saw lots of dithering which enrages me deeply,

Ya and it's very easy to remove. Just get one of those pre made PCBs that have all the components on it already. Just solder it on and some wires.

ya but you would need a framemeister or similar device to get the same quality which cost way more. Also, can the GS remove the horizontal blur? According to this page, it's hardware only http://retrorgb.com/n64blur.html

No. The n64's VI filter blurs the video output so badly that even an RGB mod doesn't fix it.

You would only need a fraMEMEister if we were talking about how to plug your old game into an LCD because mommy won't let you have a CRT in your room, which we aren't.
AFAIK GS codes can't remove the horizontal blur but you don't need an UltraHDMI to do it either. The $40 ($10) mod can do it.

Fucking cancer the lot of you. Get your information right.

As explained by most people in the n64 scene now, certain combinations work better with different games. If you have a PVM, you're best bet is getting a RGB mod. Either using Tim Worthington's board or Voultar's TGS7374 board. Installing an optional VI deblur switch is an easy option too.

If you play on a big screen tv exclusively, Then by all means get the UltraHDMI solution. Because any other route is going to look like dogshit and TV's don't support S-VIDEO anymore.

>You're playing on a CRT

So, my dear cunt. It's supposed to look like hot 90's shit. That's the charm of it. Why clean it up? Do you really want to make something look good on something that looks bad inherently? I remember games looking like ass through Y,R,W... so that's how I'm wiring my systems now. I want to be taken back.

>BUT I WANT CLEAN VISUALS

Then fucking emulate and use an HDTV. If anyone cares that you are, fuck 'em. What are they going to do, come to your house and wreck your shit with their autism?

What is it with posters like you? It seems that you are always uninformed about what you are talking about but just like to join threads and shitpost about how you feel you are superior to everyone else because you didn't invest time/money into a particular hobby. Genesis via RGB on a pvm looks mind blowingly amazing. And console makers put RGB in most of their consoles. Especially Sega since the master system. The best thing about living in the present is that we now have a multitude of choices on how to display retro games.

Don't come into a thread and call people cunts and claim that the bog standard cables that came with your retro console of choice are the way it was meant to be played. People like you who have an inferiority complex deserve to be on places like neogaf or reddit. Do your research, form an actual constructive opinion or don't post at all.

It's funny how almost every console from gen 3 onward has had native RGB or YPbPr or both, yet some retards still insist that it's somehow "wrong" to make use of it. It was only omitted from the N64 because of penny-pinching and corner-cutting, and because the N64 came out at an awkward time when RGB TVs were being phased out but YPbPr hadn't become commonplace yet.

This is a good video, thanks. The RGB output does look like it has better contrast, but I doubt I'd be able to tell the difference without doing a side by side comparison.

I'll probably go through with it some day, but I think for now I'll live with s-video and use the money towards the purchase of a new console to add to my collection.

I'm playing on a CRT that I went out of my way to get and paid a premium for, and I want the best video quality possible out of it.

If I didn't care about messy video I'd still be playing with composite on my consumer CRT.

If you paid over 100 bucks for a CRT just because it's supposedly better quality then you're doing it wrong. Even better models should still be easy to find cheap or even for free and if you care about video quality or scanlines or stuff then you might as well pick up a video monitor.
