Can someone redpill me on the Saturn?

I'm a big pc engine fan. Is the Saturn truly similar or is it a meme console that's inferior to the ps1. What's the truth?

Some of the games are crazy expensive but I'm fine with repros/CD-R's. Here's some games I'm looking at

>Liquid Kids
>Policenauts (english)
>Nights
>Elevator Action Returns
>Rayforce
>Super Tempo (by the Bonk creators)
>Saturn Bomberman
>Ys I, and Ys II ports
>Symphony of the night (new areas/Maria)
>Outrun

Any other recommendations? Also is Megaman X4 better or worse on Saturn? I can't find any consensus?

>> No.4355168

>inferior to the ps1
Not really, it's just harder for devs to work around 3D, but it's not like the ps1's 3D was great either, just easy for devs to make, relatively.
Saturn has an edge on 2D games since the 2nd processor works for the background 2D layers.
(The reason SOTN has slowdowns is because it was kind of a hack port).

You oughta play PD1, 2 and Saga.
Overall it's a worthwhile console and has a lot of "hayden jewms", especially if you look into the japanese catalog, you have countless hours of fun.

Magic Knight Rayearth
Shining Force Series
Darius Gaiden

Saturn version has dithering instead of transparencies, but the music seamlessly loops unlike the PS1 version, so it's really up to your tastes which you prefer.

>>4355175
>I love my Saturn but I definitely wouldn't call it superior to the PS1
It's superior in that it has a more quality over quantity library. Sure, PS1 had more killer apps, but it also had over a thousand shovelware titles, which makes it the worst gen 5 system.

>> No.4355273

>>4355270
Undoubtely PS has a lot of good games that are worth playing aside from the shovelware, but yeah I always felt PS is kind of like in the middle. It's neither as good as Saturn when it comes to 2D, and not as good as N64 for 3D.
That's not a bad thing, it's like a good balance between the two, but I feel the strongest 5th gen games are majorly on Saturn and N64.

>> No.4355274

>>4355270
I have no idea why anyone would judge the quality of a game systems library by the ratio of its good games to its shovelware, it's not like anyone is forcing you to play every game ever released for it. The reason I said what I said was because there are simply more excellent games to love on the PS1.

Forgot to say, saturn isn't for everyone. Seeing as you're a tg/pce fan, I'd say you'll enjoy it. If you're handy (or can pay someone or buy one) I recommend getting it modded. Modded will play off cdr. I've had no issues doing so and played the shit out of mine. Action replay is a must, both for the extra memory blocks and it lets you play any region game.

The 3d games are hit or miss, but the 2d ones are pretty great. I love it and ps1, I'd say ps1 had more major hits, but saturn has a lot of "hidd3N GeMZ".

>> No.4355839

>>4355168
>Not really, it's just harder for devs to work around 3D
It's much worse for 3D. The two CPUs can't keep up with the only the PS1 GTE no matter how good of a programmer you are, and the PS1 GPU destroys VDP1 while VDP2 is close to useless in free perspective 3D games. The only advantage it might have in 3D games is more RAM and VRAM, but every other bottleneck far outweighs that advantage.
>Saturn has an edge on 2D games since the 2nd processor works for the background 2D layers.
While VDP2 can produce impressive background effects, that still doesn't even mean the Saturn has superior hardware for 2D games. VDP1's pathetic fillrate continues to bottleneck the platform, and the Saturn can't draw nearly as many sprites as the PS1 per frame (let alone transparent ones).
>(The reason SOTN has slowdowns is because it was kind of a hack port).
The reason SOTN has slowdowns is because half of the backgrounds were generated by VDP1 and they scaled up all the graphics like morons. It's generally the worst possible showcase of what the Saturn can do, due to being programmed in such an asinine way.

PS1 is close to an objectively better machine than the Saturn for 3D games, while both machines have advantages over the other within 2D games.

>The two CPUs can't keep up with the only the PS1 GTE no matter how good of a programmer you are

They probably could, especially if you add in the DSP. But it wouldn't matter because the VDP1 is anything from a third to a sixth slower than the PSX GPU, on top of having less memory, worse colours, worse lightning, and worse transparency.

>The reason SOTN has slowdowns is because half of the backgrounds were generated by VDP1 and they scaled up all the graphics like morons. It's generally the worst possible showcase of what the Saturn can do, due to being programmed in such an asinine way.

SOTN was specifically designed around building backgrounds in a framebuffer based system. The only way they could've made it look equally good on Saturn would have been to rebuild every single level from the ground up. And even then it would still have issues with transparency and lightning due to how badly the VDP1 was designed (it can't do either of that if you are drawing sprites which blend with backgrounds).

Yeah, it was badly ported, but it wouldn't have had so many issues if the VDP1 wasn't idiotically designed in the first place.

Try burning a bin/cue of a CD+G disc from redump and tell me what results you get.

Or hell, try burning any Saturn game with a cd audio track and listen to it in the CD player mode of the Saturn. Sooner or later, the backgrounds will get cancelled out because the lack of proper subcodes will make the system think that it's running a CD+G disc.

The mini-cable that comes with the Framemeister is jp21, so if you're using a jp21 cable with your Saturn + that, you don't need any additional converters.
(Maybe you've already got a euroscart setup with your Framemeister for other systems? In that case, get a euroscart Saturn cable.)
