I really enjoy playing Retro JRPGs and Dungeon Crawl games, and I figure that a lot of you guys do too. So, why not have a weekly JRPG discussion thread.

Feel free to discuss anything related to Retro JRPGs.

>What are you currently/recently playing?

currently stuck in Mahjong Taisen because I can't read moon, which is too bad because the battle system is really fun (never really played mahjong before)

I have this rom, but I've always been leery of stuff that isn't in English. I have a little guide for basic Japanese Kanji commonly used in JRPGs, but that only gets you so far.

Never really played it, but it sounds interesting. Mahjong is dope as fuck.

Hadn't beat it before? That's pretty great. Do you know what to expect?

I hadn't beaten it until the DS remake. Something was wrong with my actual copy my brother and I had for the SNES back in the day.

Gonna play Chrono Cross afterwards?

That's pretty cool. I might have to give it a try anyway...

A long time ago, I played this Japanese TCG game for GBC that had no english patch. It seemed sort of silly, yet fun. There was a hotdog cowboy card in the "starter" deck they give you. Kind've wish I could have played it more.

>>4318256
You know that shit's gonna die as soon as you save it. So yeah, I'd definitely switch the battery out. Didn't one version of the game have passwords? That might be the original Japanese, which is what I'm playing right now.

>> No.4318276

The first Dragon Quest is honestly one of my favorite JRPGs ever, it's so straightforward in its design. I wish modern RPGs were as lean and concise.

I'd played the SNES version to a certain point in the past, and now I'm playing the DS version. I'm playing blind, I don't know what to expect, but I'm assuming I'm near the end as I revived Crono.

As for Chrono Cross, I've heard mixed things, and there are other RPGs I'd rather play instead, I'm thinking Grandia.

I'd still recommend the GBC version, as it's the most "newcomer friendly". If that's a no-go, than I would recommend the NES original. If grinding and leveling aren't your thing, there are fan patches online that make the game go by a bit faster.

Gameplay-wise the battle system is essentially RTwP, you assign commands which have cooldowns after acting, you move through the maps at different rates depending on your mobility, etc. The important thing is that each of the story fights is unique, you're presented with a new challenge involving the area's terrain features, the enemy composition, sometimes NPCs or unique gimmicks, etc. which results in the battles staying fresh and interesting. Each game also uses a different system to build your characters.

Regarding towns and stuff, they're all a bit different. In Growlanser 1 and 4 the world is interconnected with avoidable enemies along the route (like a Mana game or something like that) and mandatory story battles, in growlanser 2 you move to towns and stuff as fixed locations on a map, growlanser 3 has a world map you traverse to enter locations like in final fantasy.
In particular I think growlanser 1 and 4 make the towns really memorable. The games are structured in a way that your team takes 'vacations' after completing missions where you can talk with your party members and stuff, and you get your own town that grows and develops throughout the game.

But don't give my word too much weight, I really like Growlanser and often blab on and on about it but the games also have their flaws and are widely considered mediocre.

Thought I'd go back and finish Chrono Trigger. Began playing it in 2009 on a SNES emulator on my DS, then I found out it had a DS port and played that instead.

Got all the way up to Lavos before I lost my save around 2013 or so. Never wanted to finish the game since I put so much time into it and didn't want to start again, but someone told me it's like a 20-25 hour game, and I can honestly spare that.

Apart from that I'm still technically going through the original Phantasy Star on Master System. It's a neat game, but I find it kinda boring, I'm around halfway according to a guide, and I honestly don't want to play anymore...

That's every DQ game for me. And yet here I am.

85 hours later, I finally beat DQ7. It certainly had the best subplots and one of the best overall plots in the series. One of the things that made Final Fantasy 7 so impactful was the many new expressions character models could make with their bodies, compared to the sprites in the earlier titles. The 3DS remake of DQ7 made a similar achievement, and I somehow cared about the affairs of the characters you meet.

The gameplay itself got repetitive real quick, though, and I'm surprised I stuck with it. There are hundreds of skills and spells across like a dozen classes, but there was almost never an incentive to not steamroll everything with Knuckle Sandwich, one of the first melee skills you get, or whatever AOEs you have. At least they were nice enough to give advanced classes most of the abilities you learn from intermediate classes, because grinding even more to keep grinding would be hell.

Maribel is a bitch, though.

Careful, there are missable characters in there.

Julian is quite easy to miss as there are missions where she is included in the skirmishes. When its not needed to defeat her, do not defeat her, even if you can. The only one that is you are free to defeat her, even if not needed is during the exhibition battle at the arena. Keep his identity a secret, if choices regarding it pops, do not select it.

Elliot as well, he ask you questions during his stay at the castle, so talk to him every time you finish the mission since I forgot which specific time he asks questions. I think you need to answer 3 questions from him.

Karen is worst, there is actually a side quest about her that you can almost miss if you're not careful. If you miss it, say goodbye for recruiting Xenos in your party as she dies.

grab III for the SNES for the delicious 16-bit graphics or the GBA version for something closer to the NES version but better and with more content. it plays like a primitive version of VI - IX's vocations but don't get me wrong, the game had a lot more to offer with that and it's still stands the test of time. the story was non-intrusive and actually quite good when it does play out. it's a game that you'd do more exploring and finding new cities to do quests in rather than going a long a specific plotline so, if that's your thing, i'd highly recommend it

It's fine, very nostalgia driven and suffers form some hamfisted modern character arcs ala pervious Kitase directed FFs. The storytelling is a little fillery with not much going on other than "get character from A to B" but it's overall presentation is top notch, some of the best pre-renders every on PS1 and it's cut-scenes are by far the best directed of the PS1 era and beat most other later FFs apart from on specific scenes like say, Yuna's Sending dance scene.

On the negative side imo it has one of the weakest soundtracks, it has some great tracks (Kingdom Of Burmecia, Fossil Roo, The Place I'll Return To Someday (although I feel the tempo is way too fast)) but overall it's pretty bland and derisive of pervious works especially VIIs

Monster Rancher doesn't have RPG elements. It's purely monster raising sim game. There's no over-world to explore and very little plot. You stay on a farm raising your monster, feeding and training it and entering it in tournaments to earn money and win prizes that unlock better monsters. The monsters have a limited lifespan so you have to breed them through multiple generations.

SMT is closer to Pokemon, it's an RPG with a story. Unlike Pokemon you have a player character that fights and levels up along side the monsters you recruit. The early SMT games (1 and 2) have very limited monster customization, the monsters don't grow, so you have to fuse/discard them in favor of stronger late game creatures. Later SMT (3, 4, so on) do let monsters level up and grow, so it's possible to make an early game wimp into an end game beast with enough grinding and min/max autism.

I haven't played any Digimon games, but from what I understand they're also RPGs in the same vein as SMT and Pokemon. Also for more Pokemon-like games look into the Dragon Quest Monsters series.

Instant-kill spells work for the entire duration of the game, so pick one and level it. Teleport or Banish / Warp / whatever they called it in your translation are good choices, because they serve multiple functions. You'll want to backtrack out of the final dungeon after you pick up some of the rarer items since they're all guarded by bosses.

If you haven't leveled it up already, start grinding Blink as well. Evasion is the most important stat in this game. High-level Blink means virtually nothing can hit you. Don't worry about magic attacks because those are always weak. The most deadly attacks are always physical.

Uwu thanks~
Ive never enjoyed 2...i got bored on moonbrooke every playthrough. I like the grinding and all but just got bored since you're there forever. I dont mind grinding but i enjoy progression. Never gave 3 a good try yet. Finished 4 and 8. Like at the final boss in 5. 7 i bought on release date along with 8 3ds but i got busy and only put like an hour on them both. Finished 8 on ps2 tho and the 3ds version loses its charms imo.

>II is unpleasant
>compared to III

Not even close. I've played II through twice, I'll probably play it again. I'll never play III again, it is garbage in every aspect. II has the fun factor of mapping out the dungeons and the best ending in the series. IV is overall the best though, yes. I is boring.

>> No.4364526

>>4363798
the point of my post was to show how simplistic the name of the spell was

>> No.4364556

I need to go back and play the proper translation of II, I think maybe that's a large part of why I didn't like the game. Plain wire-frame backgrounds in battles was also a disappointment.

I was also quite young when I played through I-III for the first time, so I could be blinded by nostalgia goggles.

Don't get me wrong, II and III are my least favorite in the series. I think if I had to pick one to play right now, though, it would be III.

>> No.4364861

>>4364556
The translation is bad. There's no line breaks for change of speaker and it is definitely Engrish. But there's not really that much text, even though the somewhat spare story is quite good. So I doubt it would put you over the edge.

I gave III a fair shot. I played it after IV and II, which I both liked. But I didn't find any of it appealing. The story was frustrating, the battle graphics are definitely worse than II's. Yes, it has backgrounds, but no character graphics and the enemies barely move. The music is worse than II's. I actually plowed through it and beat it. But I admit I used a guide, whereas I liked II enough to beat without a guide.

I didn't play any of them as a kid though. No one ever told me there were even RPGs on the Genesis so I didn't play them until the 2000s.

What makes me especially annoyed about 3, to elaborate, is that it is filled with good ideas, but they are completely broken.

Branching storyline over multiple generations - but only Rhys has a real character.

Dynamic Music - but you outgrind the game so easily that you eventually only hear the "easy" theme, even on bosses.

Customizable magic - Just means you need to fully specialize or your heals will miss.

Automated combat - But you want to do this because it is mindless and easy.

The dungeons are neither II's crazy PC tier mazes or IV's well designed interesting ones.

I wanted to like III but it is frustrating and not very fun.

I fucking love that concept. The fact that it's just called "hurt." No bullshit or messing around or trying to make it sound like anything but what it does. It's not glamorous, it's just "hurt."

Do any of you know how to get save files from ps1 memory cards onto the computer?

>> No.4365701

>>4365635
The easiest way is to use a modded PS2 and transfer the saves to a USB stick.

No way to do it with a PS1 unless you buy some third party hardware, which is a waste of money.

>> No.4365726

>>4365635
Either buy a USB memory card adapter, which is kind of pricey, or mod a cheap PS2.

The method I use is to use uLaunch ELF on my PS2 to transfer to a flash drive, then move to my computer. If you're planning on using them in an emulator, you need a PC application called pxge (PSX Game Edit) to convert them from single save files to memory card files that you can use in an emulator.

It's a huge pain in the ass to be honest.

I finished Final Fantasy VI for the first time last week, capping off all the Nintendo-era FF games. I loved it, I'm honestly not sure if I like it more or less than V but the two of them are the best in the series so far.
Between playing V and VI, I went back to play all the "spinoffs" which were mostly unrelated games with the FF label released before VI. There don't seem to be any games given that treatment before VI and VII, so I'm not sure what RPGs I should play as an interim, if any. I'm considering playing other Square RPGs like Secret of Mana and Romancing SaGa since I played the earlier games of that series already, or play Dragon Quest I-VI to see what Enix was doing before FFVII.

marathoning six dragon quest games in a row will probably burn you out since the series is a lot more consistent in terms of mechanics and tone, but you should at least give the series a try if you never have before

I don't plan to marathon it, I still played other genres in between the FF games, but I'll keep that in mind so I don't play more than 1-2 at a time without a break.

Don't stray too far from town until you have the heal spell. At level one you should be fighting those fly things only, if fighting two of them at once wrecks ya then run until you fight a single one. You can most certainly beat a lone one.
