What's your favourite "game to cartoon" adaptation? Anime is welcome, too.

I remember watching the SatAM intro on a Sega VHS my friend had. We watched it over, and over, and over, and over. I had wet dreams imagining how amazing that cartoon would be, but it was nowhere on TV in my country.
Then suddenly, my cable company got a new cartoon channel, and there on the grid said SONIC. I was so fucking excited.
I remember impatiently waiting until the show started, it seemed like forever, but it finally happened. Except it wasn't that awesome "fastest thing alive" intro, but some goofy looney toons-esque cartoon that seemed much worse than the other one.
I was very confused. I still watched it and still got excited to see Sonic on TV, but I was kind of disappointed.
Then I finally got to watch SatAM (they had it during weekends on that channel) and... the intro was the best part of it, the episodes themselves couldn't hold my attention, it was boring, and somehow the more comical AoStH was at least less boring, especially because of robotnik's silly robots (best part of the show).
In retrospective, neither were really good, but I'll admit Adventures was more entertaining.
The Sonic OVAs are the best sonic animation though.

It's a shame we never got a Sonic cartoon done by the studio that did Animanicas...

Super Mario Bros Super Show hasn't been beat.

Good jokes, game sound effects and music, those live action segments are legitimately funny, and aside from maybe the Princess, the voice casting was well done. Plus Zelda on the weekends ( fuck you I liked it )

I feel like the musical numbers and staying rooted to one location is what made the successor Mario cartoons inferior. Plus Captain Lou and Danny Wells were great voices for the bros, second only to Martinet. Mario's voice in SMB3/W was too gruff, and Luigi sounded like he got kicked in the nuts.

I guess the Kirby anime with subs is a close second but nobody fucking bothered to finish subbing it.

Well, did you expect a good story? It's aimed at kids anon. It has good animation and good music, it's more enjoyable than the american cartoons.

>> No.4353498

>>4353492
Oh don't get it twisted, I don't think the american cartoons are amazing either, i'm just saying the OVA is pretty shallow and dumb, and only gets a pass from fans for looking nice and having a few shonen anime fights.

>it's aimed at kids anon

Weak shit dude, there's lots of kid's movies and shows with good story.

>> No.4353501

>>4353476
Yeah, Super Show nailed it. People shit on the whole "different theme/setting every episode" gimmick, but honestly it made sense. The writers realized that sticking to the locations and plots of the games was a really poor idea, accuracy be damned.

>Plus Zelda on the weekends ( fuck you I liked it )
It's become cool to hate Zelda, I guess, because it's not very much like the games, and Link has such a bold personality, but honestly it's a great little fantasy series, easily stands toe-to-toe with the best of the cartoons at the time. It's just become such an easy target because people who look back on it, or worse, underage who never saw it end up judging it poorly just because it's not like the games.

>> No.4353503

>>4353498
>OVA is pretty shallow and dumb
It's not that bad. I mean for an hour long mini-movie, it hits all the right notes. Only thing I can really point at being dumb, in the typical anime fashion, is how Sonic and Metal Sonic are somehow spiritually and physically linked, with no real explanation, and it becomes a major part of the plot towards the end. Other than that, it's pretty airtight.

That was TMS. They were a Japanese animation studio that worked closely with a lot with Disney, Warner Bros. and some other American companies during the '90s. They actually animated the 4-part Chaos Emerald arc in AoStH, so there's that, at least.

I have a soft spot in my heart for the old Super Show, Zelda and AoStH cartoons, but if we're including anime, there's only one true GOAT:

Street Fighter II The Animated Movie, especially with the U.S. soundtrack. The blend of choreography and music in the Chun Li vs. Vega scene gives me goosebumps every time.

The street fighter movie was such BS. Chun Li shouldn't have been able to throw that couch for a start. When does that ever happen in the game? That fight scene was shit.
She isn't even in her proper costume for the fight which is so incredibly stupid and a betrayal of the source material that I can barely comprehend it. I can only assume mental deficiency on your part for thinking it is good, which considering the state of US education probably explains the film's popularity. Fuck you.

I remember renting this on VHS. Fucking horrible.
You probably meant the other cartoon I just saw on google though, which I never watched.
By the way, there's also the CGI Donkey Kong series, I remember that being fun, also good reaction images.

Speaking of DK, anyone remember a sort of TV spot with both Donkey and Diddy, not animated, but puppets, and they would talk about upcoming SNES games? I remember them advertising Killer Instinct and Yoshi's Island that way. I searched all over the internet but to no avail.
It was during the "play it loud" era, as both Donkey and Diddy would say "play it loud!" at the end of the segment (it was really short, like 3 or 5 minutes)

>> No.4354619

I don't think I ever watched that TV spot but I do remember that I used to be on a holiday in france 16 years ago and we were able to watch shows on canal +, which used to be a european equivalent of HBO, and one of them was called "Donkey Kong TV.Cool" or something? I tried googling it and finding information on wikipedia but I could never find it. It was kind of like Super Mario Super Show where they were always in a different setting but with the CGI from that TV series someone else in this thread mentioned. But Tezuka couldn't control himself (as Kirby), so he would usually start a story as Moore and end it in some batshit insane way.

Anyway even his more "kiddy" stuff like Astro Boy or Jungle Taitei has a lot of powerful, meaningful writing that goes beyond an adventure comic for kids.
I don't think I've ever read a comic (manga or otherwise) as spiritual as Hi no tori/Phoenix.
