Opinions on the first western Saturn controller model?

I thought it was okay back then.

I remember I thought it looked cool as fuck as a kid and wanted one, was disappointed with my "less cool" model 2 controller I got with my system.
Now as an adult I look at the model 1 controller and its d-pad and think... what the actual fuck?
Model 2 saturn controller is now my all time fav pad.

It was perfect. I loved it. Great for arcade games, especially fighting games.

You're thinking of the model 2 controller.

Please post pictures of your hands so I can see what kind of mutant birth defect you have to have to think this is a good controller.

I felt and tried it for the first time at a store demo kiosk. After having used the SNES and Genesis 3/6-button controllers, and having seen the pics of the Playstation controller and understanding the logic of its design (thicker SNES controller with handles), I thought this thing was an abomination. The d-pad dug into my little kid thumb joints.

tl;dr - it was one of many reasons I didn't want a Saturn and laughed it off for so long. You only get one shot at a first impression and this was a bad one.

It looks gay

I still use one today and like it a lot. Over all the Japanese model/model 2 is probably generally better and I do wonder why they bothered to switch the design at all but eh

I own both versions of the controller. I like the design of this one.

>>4353694
My hands are perfectly normal. It's the N64 controller you're thinking of, since that was specifically designed for mutated hands.

But the N64 controller has a human-friendly d-pad.

This is correct.

Also note that the giant Xbox logo in the center was possibly there because they planned it to be Dreamcast compatible at one point, so they needed space for VMUs.

>that d-pad

>> No.4356657

>>4353468
the board placement fucks with the d-pad internally a bit (it's got this weird slant to account for the curved shape, it makes hitting diagonals a bit more inconsistent than you'd expect), and the d-pad cover is garbage (if it had the JP-style circular cross cover, it'd be drastically better).
I'm a fan of the size, it's a nice fit in my hands, and the construction is otherwise pretty good. Unless you have tiny nip hands, the size shouldn't be a problem.
