Curious how the "original" vision of Sonic always underperformed in Japan compared to America. >> No.4355971

As a pinball game, it has weak hitbox detection and wonky physics. As a platformer, Sonic feels really off compared to the other 2d games. As an overall game, it suffers from a disgusting amount of slowdown and a gnarly difficulty curve where you rarely die, but often get stuck knowing exactly what you need to do but simply keep failing at it (the last two levels take so much patience, especially that final boss fight.)

But tables are ridiculously complicated and interesting in a good way, and being able to control ball trajectory in midair makes for some really fun gameplay that makes you feel like you're pulling off skill shots the entire time you're playing. Seriously; using the right flipper to launch Sonic straight upwards, curving him to the right behind the flipper to hit a target, bouncing off the target into an enemy and finding a new area to explore? it never stops feeling cool.

This is also my favorite Sonic game for look and sound. The sprite work and background design is fantastic, and the overall sound motif catches that '90s industrial/hip-hop/metal aesthetic that's so hard to not make sound overly cheesy.

I love this rushed piece of shit game, even with all it's shortcomings.

I beat this game on the console without any save states when I was a kid. But only once I think, the final boss is really bullshit, he doesn't kill you but throws you all the down to the start of the level and you have to spend forever getting all the way back if you fuck up even slightly.

>> No.4357578

>>4357405
The most frustrating part is that the actual mechanics of what you need to do for that boss fight are so simple. Just shoot the huge button in the very center until the traps are cleared, then shoot through a wide opening on either side of the table, and hit the boss 10 times without falling out. But even the slightest error sends you blasting down 2~8 tables deep depending on how bad you are at aiming Sonic as he falls. It's fucking rough. Especially when you spend 5 minutes climbing back up and immediately fumble back down the drain or out a side window on the first shot.

I literally enjoy every part of every level in the entire game up until I enter that rocket ship for the first time.

I really wish it had more content. Or that there were more games like it. Metroid Prime: Pinball comes to mind, but that's about it.

Well looking at it now, it's probably because I last played it in 1995, and it was pretty good at the time. Almost on par with Pinball Fantasies/Dreams.

Also, if you are a late 90s / early 00s PC gamer, you might also want to check Balls of Steel and Addiction Pinball - just so you can see a Duke Nukem or a Worms Armageddon themed pinball game.

The only thing based on it is using Sonics American design (where he has a round ball head with spikes on it, instead of the spikes being less pointy contiguous with the head).

The only other common point is using the cartoon cast in the bonus stages, but honestly, that's just a time saver measure so they don't have to design new animals there.

The Sonic design didn't come from the cartoon, it came from SOA's depiction of Sonic in box art and marketing. It was their own design, that the cartoon used later on. I forgot the guy who did the artwork, I recall he died a few years ago.

As for the whole satam connection: the Archie comics used those characters a year before either satam or Spinball had. In fact Spinball uses the early pink design for the furry princess, same as on the archie book. And all of those just used the character names etcetera from an internal Sonic Bible made by SOA to begin with.

So Spinball is based on the SOA design, which is what they also based the comics and cartoons on. It would still have those cameos, even if the comics or cartoons did not came to be.

Fun fact:
>On the final day of Spinball's development, the team was throwing their "end-of-project" party when the Japanese group working on Sonic 3 dropped in to see how things turned out. The start-up screen for the demo featured the title jingle from Sonics 1 and 2. Hirokazu Yasuhara, director of both games, wondered how the Spinball team managed to talk Sega into licensing the original theme. The rights to the original Sonic music composed by Masato Nakamura belong to his band, Dreams Come True - a fact the Spinball team was not aware of.

>DCT's licensing fee was more than Sega was willing to cough up, so at the very last minute composer Howard Drossin whipped up a new opening jingle that became Spinball's title theme.
