Experience points, regardless of their function, are borrowed from tabletop games. RPGs are named for their mechanical features alone. So Faxanadu is an RPG.

RotK and NA overshadows some other decent strategy games.

Nobunaga's Ambition II is imo by far the best strategy game for the NES if you haven't played it, though.

How is that surprising? C64 was big in the 80s, particularly in Europe. Most RPGs of the time were released for the trinity of Apple II, C64 and IBM compatibles.

I was a young child at the time, when I think of late 80s early 90s PC games I imagine green/white-on-black stuff we played on computer day. I don't actually have any perception of what computers were like at the time past what were probably outdated models at school.

This game's one of the original open world games. You can kill essential NPCs, for example.

Not him, but Zelda II is actually an RPG, much more-so than Faxanadu. You literally level up multiple stats. As much of an RPG as Morrowind or any other action-RPG.

It's also the best Zelda game

Yes. I fucking adore that theme so much, years ago I had a dreamcast that could play burnt discs, and I had a few discs of NES roms, I remember spending hours playing this game, I also sped the game up to 1.25 of its original speed and it felt a lot better to play.
Most of the music sounded better sped up too
The overworld, town, and battle themes of Villgust are all really great too

Faxanadu is by Hudson, not Falcom. It has little in common with the real Xanadu.
Dragon Slayer stopped after Lord Monarch and Xanadu is more a label they randomly apply every ten years.

I played through it with my sister, as a kid... I didn't feel like it was obscure, but I dunno.

A couple of years ago I got serious about playing it again for some weird reason, and went through the entire game three times to see how its multiple-loop system worked... it was kinda fun, to figure out how to beat all the bosses on each difficulty level. Pretty clunky game though. I agree with the image's implicit claim that it's at least worth trying, anyway.

It isn't terrible but it isn't great either. It's definitely no Crystalis, but if you only had Willow and not Crystalis, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

I actually agree with this. There are many games that would've been well-known to anyone reading Nintendo Power and going to Blockbuster at the time that are headed down the memory hole. The people have to know about them. Nothing is "rare" in the emulator age regardless.

Did you know about the sequel (Deja Vu II: Lost in Las Vegas)? It was released for several platforms, but not NES. Same engine, much harder game.
