Experience points, regardless of their function, are borrowed from tabletop games. RPGs are named for their mechanical features alone. So Faxanadu is an RPG.

>Are there experience levels?
Yes, even though their only effect may be increasing your maximum gold capacity. (They also have other curious effects, like determining the amount of time you can levitate)
>Is there grinding?
Yes
>Is there a statistically driven equipment system?
Yes

It's an RPG.

I played through it with my sister, as a kid... I didn't feel like it was obscure, but I dunno.

A couple of years ago I got serious about playing it again for some weird reason, and went through the entire game three times to see how its multiple-loop system worked... it was kinda fun, to figure out how to beat all the bosses on each difficulty level. Pretty clunky game though. I agree with the image's implicit claim that it's at least worth trying, anyway.

The NES one? That got the cover image on a Nintendo Power issue I think...? Therefore I feel like it wasn't obscure. But this obviously is not a very comprehensive system for measuring obscurity.

It isn't terrible but it isn't great either. It's definitely no Crystalis, but if you only had Willow and not Crystalis, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.
