Is there such a thing as "best Breath of Fire 1 version" or is the GBA one trash?

>> No.4343323

>>4342332

There's no best version because the game is pretty mediocre...I tried suffering through it but it's just so basic bitch that I got bored and stopped.

I mean, there's nothing inherently wrong with it...just nothing noteworthy either...it'd be good as a first JRPG but if you've played many others it's going to be bland by comparison.

Seriously the only bosses I can see being even remotely hard are Knight and possibly Gremlin but after you unlock the first set of dragon forms and the even more overpowered Shin form for Karn the rest of game is a walk in a park.

It's pretty obvious from the "I want my big brother" line and her having wings and blue hair. Their mother had wings when in human form too.

>>4342332
The GBA version has a dash function, nicer portraits, cutscenes images and better UI but it's easier and the washed out palette and massive dip in music quality really isn't worth it.

I can recall there being a project to retranslate it, but it's obvious either very quiet or dead.

It's pretty clear in 2 that the reason Nina has black wings is because her ancestor banged a dragon, and the first Nina basically tells you as much.

They're still destined for each other in 3 so you can assume it's true in 2 if they're chronologically reincarnated.

but then in 4 she ends up with Cray if you get the bad ending

I hate that you can only see young Nina's panties when her dress pops up. I kept trying to see adult Nina's but it her dress stays down all the time.

That said, I'm surprised nobody ever drew art of her in-game sprite appearance. Only the version based on her concept art. I don't think people drew in-game young Ryu (I always viewed him as having a topknot), either age of Teepo, or young Rei either.

Second and third games are my favorites. Breath of Fire 2 is a grindfest at the start until you get rolling, and then it's pretty much smooth sailing once you get all the cool moves and attacks.

Katt is my favorite character though I'm not a fur. Got nothing against furs, though.

As for Civilization, I loved the isometric view of the second game. Third Civilization game didn't happen. Critics will point to the fourth game as being the best, but Civ 5 and 6 blow it out of the water in terms of gameplay and quality.

Like, they finally fixed the problem were games last 24 hours to finish. And the leaders with secret motives was a nice touch.

I was pretty sure the demi-human clans were simply naturally deminishing over time, their traits lessening to become pretty much human. In BoF1, there were very few actual human humans and a lot of demi-humans, in 2, there gets to be more regular humans and less demis running around and the ones that exist have weaker traits compared to 1, and in 3, demi-humans are almost completely missing except for a few unique individuals.

I still think dq was the first game where everyone is technologicially advanced. Demi humans amd weird clans are genetic engineered critters from the underground society. The wells from bof1 were escape tunnels it vents from dq's society. They eventually got paved over.

Bof 1 and 3 both had hi tech bosses and dungeons with very little explanation if where the tech came from.

Well dq was all high tech shit

My guess is the technologlical advancement happened sometime after IV (Chronologically first in the series), Myria/Tyr somehow managed to take over things and horde everything to herself before being sealed. A lot of the reason we don't see it in 1, specifically in the final area is just due to art direction.

That does leave a pretty big question on what went on between IV - I though. Somewhere in there, Tyr was sealed away, making way for BoF1's plot.

With all flaws accounted for, my ranking would be
2>4>1>3>5

2 is just the most fun overall. Straightforward, fast and satisfying combat. Decent story. Colorful cast.
4 is gorgeous and it has a story that tried to do something different. Villains are the best in the series, for several reasons. It just feels a bit dull and drab from time to time.
1 is a mess, but it just has SO much stuff being thrown around. It's not balanced at all but it just never loses momentum.
3 has the best attempt to make the dragon system a good thing. And yet it still fails on account of all the possible options just being a trial and error game until you find the one form that's just the best. Other than that the game just feels short. You're forced to walk around with an awfully inconvenient couple of teleports that don't even help that much. And you NEED to do this if you want to take advantage of the new teacher system. It's just not as fun.
Dragon Quarter... It should have been honest about its extremely short length and actually put all the story elements in one go. I like the story it's trying to tell, but the tactic aspect is clunky and not as relevant as it should be, specially for the very few actual battles you need to fight.

I thought it was some artbook. So it's a fan idea. If they're heading the direction I'm thinking it doesn't sound half bad. Following up the desert with a water world akin to Wind Waker. Carry on the Asian theme from BoF4 and you get could get a decent parallel to Japan (which might explain the vague ninja look ugly Nina has).

>>4367390
I'd rank the games in the same order.

>1 is a mess, but it just has SO much stuff being thrown around.
That's why I love BoF1. It's a straight clone of Dragon Warrior but they just throw so much shit into it to make it different that the game never manages to be boring. Its only fault is its weird fixed damage system concerning magic.

Boredom? Its latter half is when the game really peaks.

>all the characters are pretty bad for combat

The game can get pretty grind-heavy. BoF1 is pretty easy in contrast. Are you sure you don't just need to git gud? I've never really had difficulty outside of one or two cases.

>want to play bof3 but don't like the 3d isometric shit it has going on for itself, and afraid to play if it turns out like bof2 gameplay wise
BoF3 is the one game where you can use the everyone is shit in combat argument. It was years ago and maybe I just needed to grind more but it felt like everyone was just really shitty outside of Ryu's dragon forms.

BoFIV is the best of the bunch at least when it comes to its gameplay. You're missing out.

Nah, I've played plenty of harder games, it just seemed like to me most of the good characters were not always available (Bow and Rand) for story reasons, but all the shitty ones like Sten had to be in the party for whatever reason. Everyone seemed really mediocre and had weird kits, like Katt having really strong magic she can never use for ahwhile because of her low AP pool, or Jean who had kinda below average stats but was able to hit all mooks for okay damage, as well as being able to silence targets too.

I guess it's made up for the fact that you can fuse characters and get really strong people, but iirc if you get into critical hp levels you drop the fusion, and I'm sure that's not a good thing to happen if you're in a large dungeon like some of the later ones? But I've never beaten it so idk

Comparing the cast from bof1 to 2, seemed like the first game had a much better or more useful group of characters. By the time people started out living their usefulness (Gobi and Bo come to mind) you would learn a new fusion magic and you'd be good for awhile again.

>> No.4370178

>>4370153

I have a hard time believing that last part, no BOF game's part is very well-balanced but BOF1 in particular has a host of useless characters, especially gobi (who is only useful underwater) and mogu (who is never useful)

the only thing BOF does to counter this issue is give every character a unique overworld skill, which at least keeps them sort of relevant

>> No.4370596

>>4370153
Yeah, I don't get why Katt had magic when in every instance she's just a much better damage dealer.

>iirc if you get into critical hp levels you drop the fusion, and I'm sure that's not a good thing to happen if you're in a large dungeon like some of the later ones? But I've never beaten it so idk
You're right. IIRC even some cutscenes undo fusions and some fusions get rid of sometimes required overworld abilities. It's just really shitty since it makes the fusion system unreliable.

>>4370178
>BOF1 in particular has a host of useless characters
Unless you want to purposely gimp yourself, your party is going to be composed of Nina, Bleu and Bo/Karn/Ox and in each of those cases it's better to just use a fusion as on their own they have no skill that you're going to miss out on. Bo is decent but he's required for every one of Karn's fusions that don't require you to be underwater.

BoF1 really just needs its magic to be distributed better. Seriously, Nina has ALL the healing/support magic and Bleu has ALL the battle magic. Take away Nina's buffs and give them to Ox (so there's something to lose if you fuse him) and add some debuff spells and give them to Bo (ties into him hunting which can involve debilitating prey). Gobi and Mogu could be cut from the game entirely.
