I am creating something that does not compromise the contents of the game. It will be similar to Diablo 3 (Adventure Mode), Borderlands, Grim Dawn and Dungeon Siege 2.

No story.
No new maps, because the mod will be compatible with any user-created maps.
No new weapons, because I never understood how to create and import animated 3D models in the game. (there are no guides) , so I'll take something from Unreal Tournament.

That mod is fucking awesome. The beta maps add a lot of meat to RTNP's lacking second half and the surprise map early on makes the shitty village and spaceship maps easier to swallow.

The only thing I genuinely don't like are the flamethrower Krall. You're pretty much dead if even the very tip of their fire trails hit you, which is bullshit. UT2k4's AI is noticeably more stupid than UT99's. Ever tried to play a regular CTF match with bots in UT2k4? You basically have to hold their hand the entire match if you want to win, even in regular botmatch mode. In UT99, they can hold their own and cap as long as you don't exceed the recommended player count for a map (so basically no retarded shit, like 16 bots in CTF-EternalCave).

For fun, try a bot-only match in UT2k4's CTF-Magma with the recommended amount of players and see how far the AI gets on their own, then run a match in UT99's equivalent, CTF-LavaGiant with the recommended amount of players. You'll notice the AI actually manages to get a cap off on their own once or twice and can defend well in LavaGiant, while the AI either gets picked off soon after it gets the flag or runs back to the enemy base completely unopposed in Magma.

I'm mainly going by DM metrics, CTF is even less fun with bots. UT's bots were hot shit for the time because of hand placed nav nodoes (holy shit, someone actually traced the possible routes a player might take around the map and made the bots use the navmesh, the future is real) unlike UT's main competitor, Q3A, where bots literally just take the direct path from weapon to armor to a medkit and occasionally engage the player.
Compare that with UT3 or UT4 bots and you can almost see vestigial intelligence in them, bots being able to hide, amubush, crouch walk to reduce siloutte etc, in addition to using movement techniques like lift jumps and wall dodges to get around.

Nah, UT99 bots have better and more natural movement. UT2004 bots obviously follow rigid paths and they often do shit that doesn't make sense like stopping out in the open and staying completely still to shoot. I've been able to get really good behavior from UT99 bots by playing on Masterful and setting their accuracy to 0-0.5 and other behaviors such as strafing and awareness to 0-1.0. UT2004 bots on the other hand always feel too aimbot-like and always have shit movement. UT2004 bots are better at map control (prioritizing the important powerups and getting them on time) but they're very robotic in shooting and movement.

Are Epic actually retarded? They had a strong cult following for UT which they just threw in the trash. Sure, Gears of brownandbloom and UE3 licences were essentially money printers, but if they had just followed the tried and true formula from previous UTs while adding new stuff instead of the mess that was UT3 and now this joke of a pre-alpha they'd still be able to keep one of their bases, no reason to just waste it. People say that arena FPS are dead today because people want to play different types of games, but they forget that Epic and id Software went full retard and basically killed their fanbases, who then simply had nowhere to go and just declined in numbers during the late 2000s and early 2010s.

>> No.4274889

>>4274246
Unreal difficulty (renamed to Very Hard in 227) can be pretty challenging - enemies can withstand a lot before they die. For a first mlaythrough I'd play on either medium or hard, depending on how much experience you have with shooters. The enemies get more interesting to fight later on, as they'll actively dodge attacks and seek backup or feign death when injured.

In the 227 patch, "Unreal" and "Godlike" are intended for co-op gameplay - I advise strongly against playing these singleplayer.

Never played the original Unreal back in the day, only UT99 and 2k3/2k4.

So okay, gotta rectify that mistake, since I'm a huge Q1/2 fan anyway and seems like this game is using similar tech/design philosophy.

So I downloaded the Steam version, installed the new D3D10 renderer. Nice.

Played about 6-8 levels and I dunno, it's just not gripping me. It's nothing but garishly lit corridors and super flat "outside" environments with weird af weapons and health spongey monsters that jump and strafe all over the place (did they seriously just use the bot AI for most enemies? I remember Nehahra for Quake was heavily criticized for wild enemy strafing)..

It does kinda feel like a tech demo showcasing the engine to be honest. There's no single cohesive design direction, everything seems too safe and cookie cutter. Feels like if I play more, it's just going to be more of the same, so I don't really feel like continuing. And the combat has absolutely zero weight to it, you just shoot a couple dozen bullets at the enemy and then they die. They don't even seem to have "pain" stances.

Basically, cool engine, meh gunplay, bah art direction, very convoluted level design with 999x switches to find and dozens of underwater tunnels to slog through.

But what the fuck, sell me on this game if you can. Or I'm gonna play Gunman Chronicles.

The game picks up later on when you reach the second ship that crash landed on Na Pali. The NPCs(Nali) do help you if you save them from enemies; they'll give you items and show you secrets like upgrades to your Dispersion Pistol. Some of the items you pick up like Nali Seeds that help you in a pinch if you really health or the battery pack that amplifies your Dispersion pistol and ASMD rifle's damage. The art direction is very different from most FPS games, a wombo combo of sci-fi and some weird Aztec-ish alien architecture. I bet you didn't even get the Sniper Rifle to pop people's head and watch them tumble around

Let's traverse through a series of underwater tunnels fighting tough as fuck enemies with fuck all cover and slowmo underwater controls, maybe we'll find that one door that was opened. And maybe that switch wasn't timed. Have to go all the way back and flip it again, if it was. Also everything looks the same and there's no automap because fuck you.

When does it get fun? Yeah, I get it, the transparent water and colored underwater lighting was a p cool selling point when they marketed their engine back in the 90's, but it doesn't make for a very fun experience.

Find a bug/exploit like ucc batchexport that ut99 had, of course.

That's how servers distribute anticheat dlls in ut99.

They import the .dll as a "music" in ucc/unrealed which accept anything as a binary blob.

Then you can just export the "music" as whatever file extension you want directly into your system folder using said commandlet exploit.

Yes, the default ut99.exe also has a few commands to directly launch exe in the system folder. Sleep tight, ut99 players.

t. A guy who spent way too much time developing on unreal 1.

What kind of exploits are we talking here? Isnt ucc just something used mainly for compression/decompression? Never messed around with the files before.

>> No.4363581

>>4363539
ucc is a command suite, you can expand upon it using .u or .dll, if desired.

By default it ships with the compiler (ucc make), compress/decompress for making .u.uz, batchexport which was meant to dump resources like sounds/textures there are more undocumented ones as well but I'm not at home where I can list them.

The exploit is quite literally instantiating an instance of the batchexport class at runtime, calling the main function with the correct parameters and boom you can extract a .dll or .exe to your system folder.

It requires only foreknowledge of the .uxx filename in cache.

It shouldn't be possible to execute a commandlet at runtime, but yet it works. Unreal gold also has batchexport but the game crashes with the same code to attempt the exploit.

Between the arbitrary binary allowed in a .u/.umx and being able to execute commandlets at runtime do you get trouble. I've yet to hear of anyone exploiting the .exe execution though...

>Will normies reject modern gaming

No, at least not for a decade, minimum. Normies never cared for games, they never felt what it was like to be truly invested in a game because it wasn’t a hobby for them. It was just pass-time between moments of hanging out with friends/going to social events/school/work. Even when they reject modern gaming at some point they will have nothing to compare it to because they never experienced non-microtransaction gaming. All they experienced were season passes and n64. That’s all they will remember. I’ve recently taken the phrase “don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened” to heart simply because of that reason, I will never again experience what it was like to be part of the exciting times that were Quake and Unreal, but at least I managed to be part of it for that short time. At least I got to enjoy it. Normies never will. Parties will always be the same experience no matter the decade, getting wasted at your friend’s house will always be available to pick up and do over again, but Unreal will always be unique and will never be the same.

>> No.4382101

>>4371751
No because then you sacrifice accuracy. You want low DPI mouse input + medium or low/medium in-game sensitivity + larger mouse movement to get pinpoint shots. It allows more range of aim, hence better accuracy. High DPI mice or high sensitivity reduces range of aim adjustment so you won’t be able to land as many accurate shots.

Good opinion. I'm getting used to think that this applies to every experience. Whatever you feel, you feel it for the last time, and there never would be again exactly same feeling or experience. This contradicts with the whole idea of online gaming as gaming without borders or ending. I guess you reach the end of online or mmo game at the moment where it starts getting old, and you see no novelty in it.

The Glide mode is deprecated and has been fully replaced by the latest D3D and OpenGL renderer revisions. Before the latest patches and fan patches, the OpenGL version was noticeably inaccurate especially with hardware gamma levels, but that isn’t the case anymore.

The only reason to use the Glide renderer in the current year is if you have a CRT and/or actual Glide hardware and you want to play totally vanilla.

Picked up the Rockets mod for UT99 again recently. Some of the ammo types are godly and fun as hell to use, like the frag rocket, which shoots out a shitload of Flak Cannon pellets when it explodes. and toxic rockets, which does the same with Biorifle glop, but there's some that are kinda shit, like the seeking grenades that seem to never work right (they give a lot of ammo per box, so I just use them to spam grenades in areas until I can get something better) and the mercury rockets, which are just a very fast projectile version of the Sniper Rifle's hitscan bullets.

The best strategy seems to be going for the regular RL ammo so you have something to tide you over until you get the good stuff.
