This is the closest thing to Mega Man that I can get into, also designed by Capcom.

Legends 2.

But I also love the rest of the games, particularly X, X4, 6, 8, and Zero 3.

Out of all the ones I've played, MMX was the best. Everything else just felt bad, retarded, or desperately trying to be X.

Love them all but for consistencies sake I'll have to say classic because I like all 10 + MM&B. Can't say the same about the X series, but X1 is my favorite overall game. Mega Man 2 and 6 are after that.

>> No.4344142

Mega Man 1. It's hard, but it's down to the basics of play mechanics which are fun and innovative for its time. Try beating Iceman's stage without the beam gun and the cutter. It's a high for sure.

I think it gets a lot of unjust hate too. Did you know they developed it in only 3 months? I think that's pretty damn impressive for what it is. It's one of my favorite games in the series, though I'll acknowledge it's not perfect.

If I had any complaints it's how the stiff controls can stress you out on certain aspects of stages like Freeze Man's when trying to get that letter or those tires and flame pillars in Turbo Man's stage. or Slash Man's boss fight but these are all minor things to me. Wily stages are a little boring to me too but all in all, it's the little things that come together.

MM7 is severely underrated. Everyone gets hung up on "big sprites" but not all the cool stuff that game does. It has SO MANY secrets, alternate paths, and cool features.

>> No.4344912

>>4344646
The little detail that sticks out to me is the opaque sprite lighting effect when Shade Man descends into his boss room, and the Ghosts n Goblins music secret, alternating paths, the enemies. Shade Man's stage is my favorite in the entire game because it has so much charm and character. You can sense that the dev team had a lot of fun with it.

top 3 from someone who is not into megaman and will probably be chastised by serious fans...

1. legends 1
2. x
3. 7 or 8

although I'm 36 and remember people playing megaman on nes I never liked it back then. I like them now. but back then It was all Zelda, rpgs, or koei strategy games.

legends 1 and 2 I discovered this past year and really loved them. stiff controls...but I have no idea why but I had lots of fun.

Can't speak for Star Force, but BN is good shit. Don't expect the series to hit its stride til the second or third game, but that's not excuse to skip the first one. It's still worthwhile.

I recently wanted to get more into Megaman, I've only really finished ZX Advent which I loved, but I know it's nothing like the rest.

Is the Legacy Collection on Steam good? Or should I just emulate them? Should I start with X or straight into the original games (I kind of suck at NES era games)?

Well, ZX is like ZXA, so you should at least play that if you haven't.

Legacy Collection 2 is good, but the first one you're better off emulating.

Besides, there exists a lot of patches which fix glitches/lag for MM games. Copy pasta:

For MM3, there is "Improvement" which gets rid of all lag, fixes a lot of glitches, and also has some other additions/changes which you may or may not like
http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/992/

For Rockman 4 (doesn't work with MM4), lag reduction patch, there are two patches, one "standard" lag reduction, and another one which also changes other things like being able to switch weapons on the fly (but also gets rid of the autoscroll sections...)
http://www.geocities.jp/borokobo/zip/Rock4Optimization_v3.zip

For Rockman 5, but these ones also works with MM5. Lag reduction patch:
http://www.himaq5.xyz/rock5easily/archive/rock5_lite.zip
Lets you switch weapons on the fly (select, down+select, select+start):
http://www.himaq5.xyz/rock5easily/archive/rock5_weaponselect.zip

Rockman 6 (does not work with MM6):
Lag reduction patch but also speeds up the process of many things, like loading times, scrolling when entering a room, etc:
http://www.geocities.jp/borokobo/zip/Rock6Optimization101.zip
Fixed sliding. In the original MM6, and unlike other MM games, you couldn't jump during a slide, plus there is a small delay, wait time, at the end of a slide. This fixes both:
http://www.geocities.jp/borokobo/zip/Rock6FixSlide2.zip
With both patches applied, RM6 becomes 100% more fun.

Mega Man X3: fully playable Zero, but also makes the game better if you play as X, by getting rid of the delay when firing several charge shots, and by making level progression less linear (you can use a battle armor as soon as you have the tanks for it, and Zero can charge subweapons even without the upgrade, thus letting you open up levels in a less linear way):
