Let's have a good old fashioned Umihara Kawase thread.
What are some of your favorite fields?
Do you have any clear times that you're proud of?

People would rather talk about Tranny Muslim tripfags than Umihara? These are terrible times.

I like this series. The first one is my favorite.

I wanna start speedrunning it soon, when I get some time off work. The PC port is excellent; silky-smooth 60 FPS.

It's too bad the port of Shun is pretty shoddy, but it doesn't have much (or any?) slowdown on original hardware so I'll continue to play it that way.

There are some technique you can learn that will help, like how you can give yourself a boost by hooking the ground, walking away from the hook, then reeling in and jumping. You do have to spend a lot of time playing to get a good feel for the physics, though.

You can check the validity of a DS game by seeing if the code printed on the front label matches the one that's on the back of the cartridge. Here's a pic of my copy of the game, front and back. See how the middle section of the label code is the same as the first four letters on the back of the cart? That's how you know it's legit. It might be pretty difficult to get that kind of info with an online auction, but if you message the seller you can sometimes get them to take additional pictures for you.

It's even published by success, so maybe if we get lucky it'll have VR's other waifu, cotton in it too.

It's pretty unique. If anything it reminds me a bit of something like Astra Superstars, where the inputs themselves are very simple, but there's a lot of variety in your attacks and figuring out how to use them.

I really enjoyed playing as Umihara in particular, who gets to bounce all over the stage with the rope. You can do things like hook onto the ceiling/walls or do the rocket jump like you see in

>>4313094
Yeah, the footage out there is not great.

iirc there's three attack buttons, and then a skill button which can do every character's more unique attacks (in umihara's case, everything with the fishing line). Supers are performed by hitting three buttons at the same time + a direction. It's really easy to get into, but I got destroyed by the Japanese players, so I think that's a good indication that there's a decent skill ceiling.

>> No.4313256

>>4313234
So basically blazblue with a shortcut for supers.

Judging the skill ceiling in a fighting game this early is pretty difficult. You can beat people in the early game with just fundamentals. before everyone figures out their game.
I doubt the game will be balanced since I don't think they've ever made a fighting game before but it'll be fun to mess around and find tech. That's what I'm going to do since I know 0 people I know will actually play this with me.

Does Kawase play like in her games or like Hazama or just certain moves move you a certain way and you can't influence it?

>> No.4313270

>>4313256
They did make Blade Arcus before, but I never got to check that one out.

Kawase's moves are indeed set moves, but you do have influence on how far they go, cancelling them, etc. I found it pretty fun to cover the entire stage (both horizontally and vertically) with her. Playing with 2 kawases is especially fun.

I guess it depends on the person. I played it once for about an hour and couldn't get the hang of it. Then I played it the next day and all of a sudden thinfs started clicking.

Maybe the problem is that you're trying to focus on specific maneuvers instead of just enjoying the game? Most things come naturally, and by the time you actually need any specific maneuvers, you've probably either figured them out by chance or can come up with your own way to beat the level.

The thing that makes Umihara so good to me is that there'a no one right answer as to how to approach the game and its stages. It's just such a freeing experience from start to finish.

I disagree, the controls are simple. But mastering the game mechanics takes time and it's very rewarding when you figure out how to skip most of a level with good swings. the game shows you basically all you /need/ to finish the game, but creating faster, more efficient or more stylish routes is down to your experimentation and understanding.

>> No.4361380

>>4361152
What you're saying would be alright if it was correct - that you needed to master the mechanics to beat the level faster by using shortcuts. What's correct, instead, is that you can't beat the game normally (without using shortcuts), without mastering the convoluted mechanics completely.

>> No.4361408

>>4361380
You can beat most levels using the stuff they teach you. and the easiest levels are the most straightforward exits. there are multiple ending doors so you can beat the game if you just get used to it, not even mastering it. I've beaten every stage in sayonara and almost every stage in SNES and I still don't know all the things you can do with the physics.

There's even a stage that only appears after 30 minutes of play that is an ending door so you can finish the game without going through a full route.

You don't need to be amazing to beat the game. And I don't agree that the mechanics are convoluted either. it's just hard to wrap your head around at first but when you get it, you don't even need to think about the execution anymore.

No shit. Those levels come at the later end of the game though so it's not like you haven't had the chance to get to grips with it. You wouldn't argue that you should be able to beat any Mario level without learning how to jump.

>They expected you to get good eventually
They expect you to master the game completely like you're some autist who only plays one game until he knows how to beat it with closed eyes.
Umihara Kawase is a neat concept, but it's badly executed, and all that needs to be done to fix it completely is to make it so that you reel in with the up arrow, and not the down arrow, just like every other fucking video game did it (read: Worms Armageddon and others). I'm not turned down by a game if you need some time to get used to the mechanics, but after playing the game so much by now (I've put god knows how many hours into it), I still get fucked.
>there are easy mode routes too
Like?

>> No.4361494

>>4361446
wow button + down is so hard. I bet you get angry at DP motions in fighting games too.
Pressing up to reel in only makes sense if you're attaching exclusively to ceilings like in worms. down works better with horizontal and downward directions. and making you switch would be more confusing. The game isn't badly executed. If you're so mentally stubborn that you can't adjust to pressing a different button than other games then that's your fault (especially after claiming to have played it for untold numbers of hours).
Again you don't need to be amazing to beat the game. the shortest route is only 6 fields. The game isn't made so you beat it then move on with your life. Hence multiple routes and exits and harder stages at the ends. You play it if you like the gameplay, and by doing so you get better over time. if not then play something else.

Controls based on video game logic (logic of video games looked through the prism of our own existence) =/= controls based on logic inside the video game (logic that's inside the game itself, ignoring our own existence and what would be more comfortable to us)
Seeing you unable to discern these two makes me worried about your intelligence. To explain further to you, brainlet, here's an example:
Let's say I want to make a video game with specific mechanic related to building places.
>Controls based on video game logic (logic of video games looked through the prism of our own existence)
I would make controls less realistic in a sense that it's not realistic when compared to our own existence, but it makes sense, so to say, in a video game logic kind of way (a better example for this would be the supporting cast selling items to you in a RPG, it's video game logic, but if we applied the logic of our own world, the merchant would give away items for free since he'd want you to win at all costs).
>controls based on logic inside the video game (logic that's inside the game itself, ignoring our own existence and what would be more comfortable to us)
The controls would make a lot of sense when compared to the design of the game, but from the point of view of our own existence, the point of "video game logic", it would be unorthodox and hard to grasp.
More concrete examples:
>the former
You build by picking certain items and placing them, all with a left click.
>the latter
You build by inputting a complex sequence of buttons that lead from the gathering of material, over adapting it, to putting it in place.

I can't believe I managed to beat 3 routes in Vanilla Shun, I'm so happy bros

Fields 43, 30, 55

Am I missing any other end field?

There's an ending on field 52 as well.
Here's a chart of all possible routes in vanilla Shun.

Thanks man
Am I seeing this wrong or there is really no way to go to field 52 without passing through field 9?
I hate waiting around for that shit, I don't get why they repeated that boss when it was already so dumb in the SNES game.

You can go straight to the door in Shun, just wallclimb the right part and swing your way up there.

You can climb from the right after the backpack as well.
