Horis died because they're slow and boring. The real challenge usually doesn't come till the second loop and gitting gud is just memorizing anyways. Bullet Hell is the same shit, but it's a little more hectic at least which is why it's held on a little. The same reason platformers and beat em ups mostly died out.

Look at the retro genres that survived the best are the fighters, racing and sports games, fps, strategy, puzzle games and RPGs as well as roguelikes. They're mostly the ones where there is strategy and thinking on the fly. Less so RPGs but that's a different situation.

Tl;dr DDP didn't kill Shmups, it let them limp along a little longer.

Sega marketing with thunder force 6 was that it was supposed to revive the traditional shooter genre. People just weren't interested.

Say what you want about Radiant Silvergun but at least they tried giving the chain system a purpose by powering up your weapons. In Ikaruga, if you defeat the enemies in the intended order, you will find survival easier since enemies always spawn in formations of 3.

Ikaruga scoring also rewards the player with points by using the homing laser, which in turn encourages you to absorb more bullets so you can charge the laser more.

The scoring mechanic works like a well oiled machine.

I ain't denying that, it is very challenging and it does make you play differently. The problem I have with the chain system is that it isn't any helpful to survival. It's actually detrimental to your 1cc since it makes you wait around for high-point value enemies to appear before setting up the chain. As one might expect, waiting for a strong enemy to flood the screen with bullets is a very bad decision for survival.
Also if basing the chaining bonus off the first enemy you kill isn't objectively bad then why did they change that in every subsequent entry in the series?

hypers give more firepower and clear the screen of bullets. it can be a good emergency button and is a good way to destroy high-hp enemies or bosses quickly. using hypers raises rank but bombing and dying lowers rank anyways so you should plan some hypers by default

The rank decrease from dying quickly builds back up to the value it was before. Once rank get too high you can't get it back down.

What you've said just confirms my theory that it is best to use hypers as a makeshift bomb and avoid collecting more than one if possible.
