What is it that's so pleasant about branching overworlds?

Maybe that it's pleasing to fill in the map as you go?

The feeling of discovery even when that discovery is easy

I think this is it. My big issue with Mario Maker is that I never really feel like I've found anything.

Man, look at those colors, look at that overworld and those levels.

I remember being a kid and thinking SMW's overworld was so full of life and things to discover, and i didn't give a fuck if the game was easy, it was awesome and beautiful, underwater, caves, castles, large plains of grass, SMW is flawless. No wonder this game went down in history as one of the greatest ever.

it feels like the world is huge, even if levels may not be so long.

That why i didn't liked Mario 64, you felt like trapped in the castle. I've lived it as a huge disappointment and a regression of former mario's games.

Same for the transition between Mario world and Yoshi's island. The map of YI wasn't interractive it just feel like you are doing missions and then go on for the next one.

In New super mario game's genre, map felt like nothing feels really secret. I didn't like them too.

That also the reason why i've always prefered old Final fantasy before FF10. That game was the 1st FF without a real playing map, it disappointed me so much again.

It's also one of the reasons why i prefere Breath of fire 3 to the 4th. Map felt better if you can really interact with it

Maybe it makes me feel claustrophobic, i don't know but i prefer games with interractive map and this becames unpopular with time.
