So it's the PC Engine's 30th birthday this month. Let's discuss. Favorite games, models, controllers, etc? Are you a fan of the RPGs and weeb comics or moreso the arcade ports and dinky little platformers?

>> No.4322074

New Adventure Island is my favorite game on the system, but I also like Bonk, Pac-Land and Cotton.
Anyone played the PCE version of Ninja Gaiden?

I kind of want to get a TurboExpress one day (I like collecting handhelds but it's further down on my list) but I haven't investigated the Turbografx/PC Engine much. What are some things I need to know? Region locked? Good games? Things to watch out for hardware-wise? Homebrew? Anything is welcome.

Duo-R and Duo-RX are the best models. They play both Hucards and CD's and have few issues if any. If you end up wanting an Arcade card to play the weird Strider port or Fatal Fury Special, buy the Duo Card

Stay away from regular "black" Duos.

This is the main PCE forum. Some of the users are kinda paranoid about "collectards" but if you're honest they'll help you out

this is a beautiful site with in-depth pages on each game, including artwork, cart size and manual scans. Reviews are stubs but they get the point across

Watch this video. It has 50 of the best games with clips and info. Gives pros for each

http://vsrecommendedgames.wikia.com/wiki/TurboGrafx-16

My personal favorite Hucards include
>Bonk 1 and 2
>Super Dodgeball
>Mr Heli
>Salamander
>Liquid Kids
>Soldier Blade
>Bomberman 93 and 94
>Outrun
>Wonder Boy III Dragon Trap

Some great CD games are

>Rondo
>River City Ransom
>Forgotten Worlds
>Ys I and II, III, IV
>Buster Bros
>Tenchi Wo Kurau
>Strider (not great but interesting)
>Legend of Xanadu I and II

The PC Engine is known for games by Hudson, Taito, Namco, Irem and Falcom. Hudson also published games by Red, who made a number of critically acclaimed hits. Konami made a handful and Capcom gave indirect support similar to the Genesis. Surprisingly, a number of SEGA ports are really good.

>> No.4322189

>>4322178
Human and NCS/Masaya also got big starts on the system.

Games by Technos and Compile were published by Naxat usually.

PC engine is strongest in shooters and JRPGs. Platformers are okay, with only a handful of top-tier games.

If you want Western games they are very hard to find, but there's some oddball games like a port of Loom, Madden 93 and the definitive version of Populous (on CD)

nothing is really translated besides Startling Odyssey II and Xak III.

Legend of Xanadu I and II are top-tier legendary games, which have finished translations but will not come out until the optional dubs are recorded.

The most well known pce rpgs outside of Falcom games include

>Gulliver Boy
>Anearth Fantasy Stories
>Emerald Dragon
>Tengai Makyou series
>Last Armaggedon

Blood Gear is also by the studio who made the Wonder Boy in Monster World games

About a month ago I bought a Core Grafx I (thanks Japanon!), Multitap, some controllers, and a Turbo EverDrive and I've been having a ton of fun with it. I only had a casual knowledge of the system previously, mostly the platformers, but I like the system a lot so far. The games have a comfy charm.

I managed to collect a PC Engine with CD attachment and interface dock, and after fixing up the CD-ROM drive it works, mostly. It reads audio CDs perfectly fine and games run more or less correctly, but some games get weird graphical glitches in cutscenes. Zero Wing for one always shows some kind of sprite corruption on the cinematic scenes, but it's never consistent on where or when. Sometimes it'll be a little bit at the end or sometimes it'll be throughout the scene. Rondo of Blood is sometimes perfect but occasionally a cinematic will show similar glitchiness. Gameplay is mostly unaffected, but they tend to have weirdly long load times.

Could these issues be due to using a Turbo Everdrive with the modded 3.01 Elmer BIOS? The Everdrive seems to work perfectly in most every other regard. I'd like to know if I should plunk down the money for a legit Super System Card or not. I doubt it has to do with using modern 700MB CD-Rs, because most other games seem to play flawlessly, and the one cheap game I bought legit to test (Advanced VG) seems to run identically to the burned version. Sorry I wish I had photos of the issues. Still love the system though, Alien/Devil Crush are two of my favorite time wasters these days

Man Duo units are so freaking expensive, I wouldn't be able to sell my complete combo for enough to pay for a working Duo. The best I could do is buy a known broken one and troubleshoot and fix it, and I don't know enough about electronics to do that. I was lucky enough in the first place to find a "junk" CD-ROM unit that only had one minor fault (arm holding laser assembly to worm gear was loose). I'm happy to have a 95% working console, I just want to get some ideas on what could be causing the glitches. I'd rather not have to go through the hassle of procuring a new unit just to spend more money fixing it.

The SEGA CD version is wholly unique, it's totally re-drawn, has a totally different soundtrack and (optional) smooth scrolling (I guess it's optional because it makes the game chug). Honestly I don't have a ton of experience with the SEGA CD version, but I have researched it. The PCE CD version is basically the SuFami version, but with better dungeon scrolling, Redbook CD Audio (for a few tracks), spoken dialogue, an exclusive demon or two, and in my opinion, the definitive version of the soundtrack, but that is highly, highly subjective. If you're a Megaten fan I would recommend checking it out, even if you can't really 'play' it it's pretty cool. Really a bummer than SMTII didn't make it to the PCE, would have been neat to see.

I love mine, especially the CD-ROM2. The CD quality music really makes me wish the SNES ended up getting a CD add on.
I went with the "briefcase" style cause I really liked the look of it, but now I'm wishing I went for a Duo-R, the power cable sticking out the side (and the RGB cable on the other, in my case) has started bugging me. Also I get the impression that these ones are most likely to turn yellow. My CD unit is a little more yellow than I'd prefer.
I highly recommend the eBay seller 8bitterz if you're thinking about getting a system, he packs it great and cleans them wonderfully.
I've got a whole spare set of these as well that I bought cheap off eBay auctions in untested conditions, the console and interface work, but the CD unit has got several problems, including the commonly broken gear that works the laser. Dunno what to do with it all.

A Duo-R is generally your best bet, since they're considered more reliable than the regular Duo (though still not bulletproof; I'd strongly recommend inspecting the caps even in a Duo-R at this point). It has composite output standard, so no need to worry about RF. The Duo-RX is the same thing with a mostly useless 6-button controller.

If you don't care about CD games at all, you can get a base PC Engine or Core Grafx fairly cheap, but since many of the system's best games are on CD I wouldn't necessarily recommend that unless you can find a good deal on a standalone CD-ROM drive as well. The base systems also need an adapter for composite video.

The GDEMU guy is working on an ODE for the PC Engine, so if/when that becomes available, a base system plus ODE might become the way to go.

For homebrew/piracy you'll want a Turbo Everdrive. CD-based games can just be burned onto CD-Rs.

Is it worth it to bid on an untested PCE+CD-ROM+Interface? I know that the PCE can be quite finnicky, not to mention the CD-ROM drive, which seems to go bad on all retro consoles. >> No.4335707

>>4335697
The PCE isn't finicky at all, base units (White/Core/Core II) are built like tanks and have a 90% chance of working in an 'untested' lot. The base units don't have the capacitor issues that plaghue the combo CD-ROM units (DUO/RX/) CD-ROM has a 99% chance of being non-operational, you will not get a working one in an untested lot. If it was working it would cost 5x more, and anyone selling PC Engines knows that. Interface will more than likely be good to go as well, which will give you composite out of the PCE out of the box which is cool. If you get a good deal and factor in ~$50 for CD-ROM repair (unless you do it yourself), it can be worth it. 2/3 pieces are likely to be fine.

Good call, the Aeon Genesis SFC translation is a broken mess. And yeah, >>4340845 is right, they fixed a major bug in the second pressing. You can find the ISO if you're emulating though. If you're buying the 'fixed' pressing is wicked expensive.

Yeah, all the HuCard games work great, but the device has the potential to play CD-ROM software (more easily if redbook audio was omitted), but it will never get updated to do so. It 's had 2 OS revisions, it's a dead project.

What was the bug?

WTF are you talking about? There is an updated CD-ROM bios that lets you boot CD games. Link here >>4322935

There's a bunch of small but irritating bugs with selection boxes being off-screen, text being in the wrong places, typical translation junk; but it adds up to an irritating experience.

Yeah, if you have a working CD-ROM unit and actual discs, that's not what I'm talking about. The PCE CD-ROM literally adds nothing to the console 'tech' wise, other than the ability to stream CD-audio. The PCE just treats the CD-ROM as a huge, huge, gigantic HuCard. It's not like the SEGA CD, which actually added additional beefed-up hardware to the console. The TED is capable of delivering CD data to the PCE, potentially allowing the use of ISOs in addition to PCE ROM files. The issue that Krikzz has actually mentioned is that it couldn't handle the CD-Audio data, but most games could be playable without that. It would be an amazing feature is all I'm saying, and we'll probably never see it. It just sucks to spend on a product with the promise of extra features and firmware updates, and then it gets abandoned. As someone who bought an official one, I just think it's worth warning people.

Fair enough. I hadn't considered the possibility of using the everdrive to run entire CD games since I have a working CD-ROM unit and burn whatever disc I need. Still I can see how it would be a helpful tool if it worked like that. Being able to negate or minimize failing optical drives is a definite goal to look toward.
