There hasn't been one for a while. Bringing it back, starting from the latest I could find in the archive!

>> No.4312192

Wow this awesome I've been looking for something like this instead of downloading random games. It seems like the PC88 games are organized in kana, so I am assuming that these are all in Japanese? I mean, if it's some English fan translation, I'll just look up the Japanese file somewhere else.

lol, It's pleasant to see this again.

Things have really improved in this scene. We now have a few notable fan translations—46 Okunen Monogatari, CRW, Star Cruiser II (almost), and both Brandish 2 and Different Realm soon. The guys who translated The Screamer also just finished the bulk of work on the Japanese localization of Sonnori's Arcturus, for anyone wanting a Korean game.

I mostly moved on from J-PC stuff since my Japanese learning's gone slow, and because /vr/ ended up not giving a shit about bumping or contributing to these threads. But that could change. I spend way too much time on Falcom games and fandom now.

>>4312192
Some games are very playable with or without moon. I remember making a list or two of just action games which get overlooked.

Here's the required Halloween GIF.

The public Neo Kobe sets are stupidly useful. I've had access to revisions of the PC-98 set which is coming along, but still incomplete.

Neo Kobe PC-98 is currently just working through doujin games, but the retail collection is as complete as it'll be without people donating specific images of games that are missing from it. Pretty great resource in general.

Another fun note in that particular vein, SL9821 has come a decent way, and supposedly the exact bios files the emulator wants have been tracked down and dumped. Haven't seen a link to where yet though.

Can't be bothered to read all that shit but I need some help.
I'm playing Foxy 2 but the HDI or CG seem to be corrupted:
-Moon's reward scene freezes up trying to load the animated CG. The panning shot works fine.
-One of the last victory scenes also freezes up.
I managed to circumvent the Moon problem by replacing her CG with another girl's but I'm not sure which files affect the victory scenes and I don't want to replay the maps over and over.

At the moment, yes. There aren't any specific or wide ranging preservation efforts going on at the moment. I only really know of a couple of individuals that have been trying to get games and dump them lately. Just some guys on the PC-98 Discord.

Opposite of obscure. It's a fairly minor system yet people blow it out of proportion.

We now have a decently ordered archive for most PC98 games. Trying to find a specific Win9x game on the other hand is a quest in futility.

Depends on what you're looking for. Hoot Archive hosts a lot of music packs for PC-X8, X68k, and some Fujitsu releases which you can play back via the Hoot player. And NFGGames has a mirror of a large collection of .MDX files, so lotsa BGM and original tracks made for X68k which you can play back on MDX players.

>>4337869
Getting info on some of those games, like alone proper dumps, has always been more difficult than mustering the same effort for PC-X8, X68k, and FM Towns releases. I'd say it's even worse if you're looking for Korean and Taiwanese PC games of the era. Neo Kobe also isn't focusing on this, and only a few people are working to buy the games off auction or wherever they're getting sold.

Meanwhile the Game Preservation Society's basically a thing now, with all the press it's gotten since NHK did a documentary on their J-PC archival and process. At least we have that. I hope they continue to get grant money and eventually lobby for a better Japanese copyright law so they can open up a museum or something.

Your best bet is probably advertising your skills on places like RHDN or in related Discords.

Think of it like a shitty job interview or marketing pitch. If you can't show someone that you have the required skills and drive to work on and finish a project, they won't want to work with you. Maybe translate a smaller game with a pretty static script and show that off as proof, but then say you're interested in x games for y systems.

Thanks man I prefer to stay away from any of that stuff especially groups and whatnot too much bs and drama without work getting done or getting done sloppy. Anyway what I'm looking for is someone who can do all the hacking aspects while I do the translation that's already done.

Then good luck finding someone else to work with you? If you don't go to the places that have people working on this sort of thing then your chances of finding people are going to be slim as fuck.

You have to vet people to work with you, just like other people have to vet you to make sure you can work with them. Teams for this kind of shit are built on mutual trust, and if you can't figure out whether you can trust someone to work well with you then your best bet is to start learning how to code and reverse engineer shit on your own.

I'm trying to learn more about the graphic capabilities of the PC-88. I think I get most of the stuff about resolution and palettes. But are there things like "color per tile limits" and sub-palettes or does every area of the screen have access to the full 8/16 colors at the same time?
And what other limitations may be considered?

>> No.4342647

>>4342270
PC88 doesn't really have concepts like tiles or sprites. It's part of the reasons it's not suited for action games.
You either get 1 layer with 8 colors @640x200, 3 layers with 2 colors@640x200 or 1 layer with 2 colors @ 640x400. And of course text mode.
X1 and FM7 allowed multiple layers with different colors but most of the times they got dictated by the PC88.

You can easily count the colors used. Most of the times it's even going to be the same 8 3bit RGB colors, even for games that require V2 mode which expands the available palette to 512.

Majority of these groups are young kids so it's just people being immature and retarded and overestimating or even faking their own skill. For example, I joined a group and had a guy that was the "translator / project manager" for a game and his translation in the beginning (that's to say a 10,000 line intro) was him Google translating half of it (I checked) and the other half he would just make shit up because he didn't understand and maybe got too lazy to use google anymore. I told him that this is not how you do a translation and that got me kicked out of the group, only to be begged to come back by the group leader because they needed actual translators desperately but all my work was erased and that shitty google translate shit was back again and I wasn't allowed to change it because the guy was "offended at my arrogance". And that's just one small example; and it's better off as they wound up selling to Sekai project so fuck that shit.

Seems to be a common thread in a lot of niche gaming projects that are not even related to translation. Kids and or immaturity/inflated egos, a sort of "bow before my awesomeness for giving you selfish peons this project!" shit that's just grating. The retro gaming community is filled with crazies of every stripe: closeted pedos, diehard weebs, gray market estrogen-chuggers trying to be their waifus, clinically depressed idiots that barely have the energy to get out of bed, covert narcissists, anti-capitalists/socialists, furries, white anti-racist activists, genuine porn addicts, and a shitload of extremely sensitive and feminine gay men. It's best to keep your contact with them to the utter minimum.

And for God's sake, NEVER EVER join their Twitter communities. It's just an endless circlejerk of depression, animu girls, half-baked political rants, and "ironic" memes like dril's tweets. It will unironically make you feel worse off about yourself than you did before.

Avoiding their Twitters does help a lot, but you still have to be careful when posting on their sites, like TCRF. It's not the minefield that their Twitters are, but generally it's best to avoid jokes altogether , unless it's the most bland shit possible, because one of the admins might find it offensive and have your ass on a platter. I know with TCRF, BMF tends to throw an angry shitfit over anything regarding sex or homosexuality.
