What's the optimum number of bits a game can have? I love the classic feel of NES games, but definatly would want SNES graphics and Megadrove sound. So I'm thinking like twelve or thirteen bits, but then I like playstation features like rumble and memory card so I'mwondering if it's more like 15 or more. Maybe 15.32 bits to have a minor 32 like psx but then it seems like 13.37 bits is more logical?? Thanks

>> No.4321152

8 + 16 / 32 comes out as 8.5 but I don't know if that's wrong or if seems too low.

Too few. Imagine how bad the sound would be if u shaved another bit off the nes. Getting tight

Bits are a bullshit, irrelevant measure, especially in this modern age. There are great games on all platforms and their good design transcends any limitations they may or may not have.

OP here thanks for the post, very interestign. I've played and love Metal slug. I find the sound is polished but retro I'm thinking you might be right

Ya but what's the right number of them? 64 is clearly too many, look at n64. Modern computers have 64bits too but they're never as polished as SNES or Playstation and most pcs are full of virusse

Yeah, you also idioticcally shut down the TT and Falcon line to get more support for that machine that you streamlined too much hardware-wise.

If the N64 is 64 bits and the PS1 is 32 bits then why could the PS1 do some things way better than the N64? (FMVs for example)

Judging by how much better the NES and 16 bit consoles are than everything else, I'm going to say perfection should be right around 12 bits

Saturn is 32 bits and I quite like that. If I were to go down I'd probably say something like 28??? 26??? 27??? 27 sounds good enough for me. It'd probably let me play Astal but if the Megadrove could do that? That would be nice too. I also like the Turbographics, I hear it's a bit ahead of the curve, so something like the Saturn+Turbographics? TurboSaturn, the 27 bit home system. Modders when? hucard.

The "bits" have absolutely nothing to do with the graphics. Bits generally refers to the size of the CPU registers (or sometimes the data bus), graphics are dependent on the video hardware. There's absolutely no reason why you couldn't have an 8 bit console with PS4 graphics, you'd just be doing a hell of a lot of bank swapping because of the limited address space.

Saturn is actually 160 bits. It has two 32-bit main cpus, one 32-bit cpu running the cd, one 48-bit DSP, and a 16-bit cpu running sound.

This. The PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch are all 64-bits consoles.

16 bits were optimal.
Games could look so great but the focus was still on gameplay and creativity
games started getting too focused on muh graphics after that.
