As a kid the levels in Doom that had nearly pitch black areas were pretty tense. But it wasn't until Clive Barkers Undying and encountering the Howlers for the first time that I really got shook by a video game.

Yeah exactly. Same with the bathroom door in the school. Grade A mindfuck. You expect a bunch of cheap jumpscares, but then the game throws you all these subtle curveballs instead to freak you out.

I was about to reply about the bathroom door in the school but anon beat me to it. The moment I knew the game doesn't fuck around.

The empty locker was better than any, or the subsequent, jumpscare.

I don't know why this one just made me angry back then. Looking at it now, it horrifying that it can even turn a doorknob.

>> No.4315534

There's a whole lot, anon.
One thing I noticed is that the first zombie in RE1 still has its irises, while later games have zombies with vacant eyes or just no irises at all.

I don't know, seeing the intelligence of a creature is more scary than something otherworldly. But that is a moot point anyway.

My points:
- The cat coming out of the drawer in Silent Hill 1
- The Licker breaking the examination room window in Resident Evil 2

I was actually more scared of the zombie dogs the first time they pop out at you in RE2.

But only slightly. I was an 8 year old I think when I first saw this. I was so fucking horrified that, even though I don't quite have the same fear now, I still dream about zombies regularly

>You're a kid, enjoying your time with it even though you're not very good at it.
>You end up losing all your lives.
>The screen fades to black, then fades into a swirling red void, sort of like the time-twister messages.
>A flash of lightning appears, signaling something is coming.
>AND THEN A BLARING SYNTH NOISE PLAYS WHILE UKA UKA'S FACE IS SHOVED DIRECTLY IN THE VIEWER'S FACE AND HE SAYS "GAME OVER" IN THE MOST SINISTER VOICE IMAGINABLE TO HUMAN KIND

I mean, it may not be as scary as OP's, but seeing as it's part of Crash freaking Bandicoot, it'll throw you off the first time you see it.

There's nothing wrong with buying a console on launch day. I remember buying a Sega Dreamcast on launch day, if it wasn't for that, I would have missed out on so many great titles. I remember trying out House Of The Dead 2 on a demo disc and how badly I wanted to buy that game.
