He's a anthropomorphic hedgehog who wants to save his friends from the dastardly Doctor Robotnik(Now called eggman). He is known to be really fast, but often has to navigate the landscape and deal with certain traps and enemies his foe has laid out for him. You can read more about the plot in the manuals and by playing the games.

Play the Genesis Sonic games and Sonic Mania first. They are fundamentals games which will make you hold the knowledge (or not) of why Sonic is good.

After them, you can go wild and pick any other existent Sonic game there to continue, as long you have played the Genesis games. Adventure, Heroes, Unleashed and Colors are some examples, but be aware 06 and Boom are terrible, so avoid them or play them for curiosity only.

Play the following:
>Sonic 1
>Sonic CD
>Sonic 2
>Sonic 3&K

Be aware that CD is pretty different from all the others, and is very much a love it or hate it game.

If you like the Mega Drive series, maybe check out the 8-bit games, though be aware that a lot of them are spinoffs that don't play like platformers. Most of them aren't that good, but a lot of people like at least 1.

After that, play Sonic Adventure. If you like it, play SA2. If not, you might as well just stop there.

Once you're done the above games, enjoy the cutesy spinoffs like Sonic R and Sonic the Fighters as interesting diversions. I recommend getting the Gems Collection for those, but be aware that the version of Sonic CD on it is pretty terrible.

For notretro stuff, I'd recommend any of the Advance games (everyone has their favourite and the one they hate), any of the Rush games (including Colours DS), and Mania, but only after you've played through the main 2D platformers.
