C64 and Atari had two versions of Lode Runner: the full 150 level disk game and a 30 level cartridge version with no editor. The VIC-20 port is cartridge only but it does have the editor and will save to either disk or tape ;)

>> No.431021

>>430932
why does the Atari version have those striped graphics?

That was made in 1984 and one of the very first third-party Famicom games

It's running in hi-res mode (320x214) which uses NTSC bleed to produce colors

>> No.431072

Some other tech info about LR:

The original PC version was a boot disk game that only works on real CGA, but they made a later DOS version that's compatible with VGA. Mac Lode Runner was released for the original 128/512 models but can run up to System 7.

hmm the vic-20 looks better than I thought it would. I'll have to add it to my vic20 stash for some playing later

It's a quite nice port considering it has a full level editor and the C64/Atari cartridge versions didn't. The cart is on the rare side due to having been released when the VIC-20 was on its way out.

The PC port is better with a joystick as I find the keyboard irksome

Yeah i was just looking into it a bit. It comes with some nice features. I'll hit up the local shops and see if one of them can pull it or hit the flea markets. A local one has alot of old retro stuff like the trs80 and vic20 and old systems like that. Decent prices also.

>> No.431196

I can't find the nes version for a decent price. It's not like it's that popular over here or anything.

>> No.431202

>>431157
I doubt you'll find such an uncommon cartridge there. If they have VIC-20 carts, they're most likely Commodore's games like Clowns, Avenger, and Jelly Monsters as these were produced in huge quantities.

Even on Ebay you'll rarely find anything except the NES version

VIC-20 was the only Commodore machine that the bulk of its games came from North America. It had some PAL games but not a lot when you consider the C64 was like 60% PAL.

The arcade game was released after the computer versions but was unpopular due to the crash in 1984. It has some added wrinkles like the ability to hang off of ladders and an improved enemy AI.

It's always fun digging through six layers of blocks to get to a gold brick only to find you miscalculated and end up being entombed in there.

>> No.431529

>>430932
That level on the PC screenshot I know all too well. The gold on the left of the screen you can't reach because the top floor (obviously) has a gap in it and the lower ones have invisible gaps. You have to trap the baddies so they reappear over there and pick up gold. Then when they come over to the right, dig another hole and grab the gold when they fall in. Repeat process (it's time-consuming)

>> No.431550

>>431529
>You have to trap the baddies so they reappear over there and pick up gold

Specifically that if you get them sealed up in the floor, they'll respawn at the top of the screen but always on the opposite side from where they were buried (thus burying them on the right causes them to reappear on the left and vice versa)
