DC lacked in FPSs just as much as it lacked in RPGs. I still enjoyed them, though, even the port of Unreal Tournament with its shit framerate.

There is definite quality to be had on both though sides but both are obviously blown away by PS1 in terms of typical JRPGs

Yeah for FPS it's really just Quake 3, Unreal Tournament, Outrigger. There is Soldier of Fortune but it has astonishingly bad load times. Half life which was cancelled but is a pretty good port. Also Kiss Psycho Circus and Spec Ops 2 both of which aren't very good.

Yeah now that you mention it, I was probably thinking too narrow with obvious good shit like Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Turok 1/2/3, Hexen, Doom64 but idk the rest of the FPS library is kinda iffy.

Duke Nukem 64 is censored to shit, Quake64 is missing levels and isnt a great port but there is a pretty good port of Quake II. There is rainbow six on both consoles, and then there is shit like forsaken, daikatana, and armarines.

I know there is 007: The World Is Not Enough which i've heard is really impressive but I never played it. Some great 3rd person shooters, I love Jet force gemini and SotE

By contrast, N64 has Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, DOOM 64 (which is a brand new game created from the ground up for N64, essentially the real DOOM 3), all of the Turok games, a better version of Duke 3D, a better version of Hexen, and better versions of the Quake games. The fact you think Quake 2 on PS1 is "better" than the N64 version is a clear window into how stupid you are. Quake 2 on PS1 doesn't even have fucking muzzle flash. 10 second loading times around every corner, half as many levels as PC version, I could go on. In contrast, N64 version brand new levels made exclusively for N64, a revamped multiplayer mode with player profiles and selectable colors, custom maps, etc.You know, everything the PS1 version lacks. PS1 didn't even get Quake 1 because it couldn't handle the levels which were larger than Q2. Pathetic.

And speaking of the controllers, both controllers only have 1 stick. The Dreamcast controller functions similarly to the N64 controller for FPS.

The stick moves and the face buttons on dreamcast aims, the L and R shoot and the dpad is assigned shit like weapon changing. The N64 for goldeneye as an example uses the stick to move, the c buttons for aiming, and the a/b/z/l/r do the rest like shooting and whatnot.

The dreamcast did have mouse and keyboard as an option though

The N64 controller had a d-pad on the left side and a stick in the middle, so you could move with the d-pad and aim with the analog, which is basically identical to dual analog. On Dreamcast, the d-pad and analog stick are on the left side, so you either have to play the game with some ass-backwards control scheme like using the buttons to look up and down or use only one stick. That's shit.

no it does not. The c-buttons on the N64 controller work as a second analog stick. Having the facebuttons on the dreamcast controller replacing the analog stick causes a lack of button in games. It was terrible for FPS and you can't deny it.

Every single FPS on the console has the option to use this control scheme to my knowledge. I use it for Quake 1, Quake 2, Perfect Dark and Goldeneye, though not DOOM 64 since you can't look up or down anyway.

I have no problem reaching A and B. For example, in PD, I use L to aim with sights, Z to fire the weapon, switch weapons with A, and B is for interacting with things in singleplayer. Pretty simple and effective.

The thing I find really funny is, despite having a dual analog controller, the PS1 has shit controls because the amateur developers couldn't even give you the option to remap controls in 99% of games. The best control scheme in Quake 2 on PS1 is d-pad to move, right analog to aim, fucking L1 to shoot, and triangle to jump IIRC. Two analogs and 4 shoulder buttons and you're using a d-pad to move and left fucking shoulder button to shoot... absolute autism.

I don't blame you because this was the default control scheme and it's how most people played, but trust me, using the stick to aim provides a whole world of additional precision and control. It will probably feel weird at first since you're not used to it but give it awhile and it'll become second nature.

You could also oddly enough use the Virtual On Twin Stick (if you can get one) for Quake 3. It's not great but it's definitely interesting playing a FPS with 2 sticks. Aside from the k&m there was also this abortion which is really only good for flight games but they advertised it to work with Soldier of Fortune.

As you would imagine, it's not very good at all. There was also a pc version of this monster too.
